About Stacy

We are passionate about the beauty of the area, the kindness of the people, and the exquisite elements produced in Sonoma that make the quality of life here so wonderful. We bring that passion into the businesses we have created: Sonoma's Best Guest Cottages, and the adjoining store, Sonoma's Best. Both of these ventures have been labors of love, and we emphasize both of those words!

When we purchased the properties, they were in a serious state of disrepair, but we saw huge potential. The store was a time-worn building built in 1913 that had operated for decades as the Von Sydow Deli. Both the store and the 4 cottages required extensive work, and we spent four years restoring them and creating a place of beauty, tranquility, and taste.

In February 2007, the cottages were selected by Sunset magazine as one of the top 10 most romantic getaways in the West, including Hawaii, and there's good reason why. Each cottage has a living room, bedroom and fully-equipped kitchen with every appliance necessary to enjoy creating delicacies with fresh local products -- your own gourmet experience at your fingertips. Each cottage sits behind its own Provence wall, has its own gas BBQ grill, 2 bicycles and shares the use of a lovely garden with a fountain and rose beds. And all of the cottages sit behind an electric gate, providing guests with total privacy and security.

The old-fashioned landmark store, Sonoma's Best, which sits in the front of the cottage retreat property, offers food products for which the County of Sonoma is famous - artisan cheeses, charcuterie, wine , salads and soups, sandwiches, pastries and gelato - along with exquisite Blue Bottle Coffee.

Much of our life experiences has afforded us the opportunity to fine-tune our sense of quality & taste, translating that and hard work into successful businesses.

We hope to welcome you our special property!

Guestbook comments from the owner

A hidden gem! This cozy cottage had all the small comforts of home -- a throw on the living room couch, comfortable bed with cotton sheets and great pillows, a full kitchen with surprise breakfast items in the frig, an outside patio with a BBQ and a chiminea fireplace, a garden with fountains and lounge chairs ...So much better than staying in a sterile hotel room...highly recommended!

Wine country winner

  • 5 of 5

Sonoma's best guest cottages was the best stay on our trip to wine country. The cottage was beautifully decorated and conveniently located. The hosts are superb ,helpful with recommendations etc.

Having a gourmet shop right on the property is a big plus,as well as bikes to use at your convenience. We especially liked having an outdoor chimney fire to enjoy on the private patio space. I would highly recommend staying here.

Perfect (quiet) weekend getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay here. We arrived to our little cottage that was clean and temperature controlled. We got the VIP package, which I cannot recommend enough! Bottle of wine, meat and cheese plate and a passport of wineries with waived tasting fees. Laura S. even helped us book massages and other reservations around town. We will be back!

I am really really really late in writing this review, as we stayed here in 06/13 (the calendar won't let me go back that far, so please disregard the date). We stayed here several nights as part of our belated honeymoon. The place could not have been more perfect - so much more comfortable and reasonable than a hotel). We brought our bikes, and we were able to bike downtown Sonoma for dinner and to several wonderful wineries. One night, we collected a bunch of tasty treats throughout the day (meats, cheese, bread and wine, obviously) and dined al fresco on our own deck. I want to go back right now! Thank you so much.

Pluses and Minuses

  • 3 of 5

The proprietor adds a personal touch to this establishment, which is in the back of a country store. Our cottage was cozy. Sheets etc were nice but unfortunately, the mattress is the kind that transmits every motion your partner makes so don't count on getting much sleep if you are a light sleeper. Sleeping on the small couch was rough. We paid for two night but left after just one, so it turned out to be an expensive excursion. Carpets etc somewhat worn and reminiscent of a motel. Small property with views onto the parking lot. Full kitchen but I saw no tableware for actual eating. A five minute drive from town.

Owner's Response: Dear Peter: While we appreciate your VRBO review of our property, we would like to point out a few corrections in your review, with the hope that you will have a better understanding and change your review to reflect these corrections. First of all, we were not aware that the mattress transmitted motion from your partner making it hard to sleep. We will look into this. I can only imagine that sleeping on that small couch was rough. My only wish is that you had contacted me, even in the middle of the night, so that I could have told you that the leather ottoman in the livingroom folds out to a twin bed with a nice comfortable mattress. In addition, I wish that I had had the opportunity to discuss other options with you before you departed a day early. I want to correct your comment that there was no tableware for actual eating in all cottages. We have tableware in all our cottages. In your cottage, the dinnerware was on a rack to the left of the refrigerator, not in a cabinet. You must have expected to see the tableware in the cabinets and missed seeing them on the rack. Also, I want to correct your comment that your cottage looks out to a parking lot. Your cottage looks out to a driveway. While I know that looking out at a driveway is not desirable, we have tried our hardest to soften the view by adding many potted Japanese Maple trees and flower pots. A better view is from the kitchen window which looks out to our garden. Also, while I agree with you that the rug in the bedroom is somewhat worn, saying “reminiscent of a motel” is puzzling. Using the word “motel” would not give future guests a good indication of the feel of our unique retreat property. It would be much appreciate if you would eliminate saying “reminiscent of a motel.” If you would be so kind as to make these corrections in your review before it is posted, we would greatly appreciate it. Please contact customer service at VRBO to delete and resubmit your review. We are hopeful that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back again and make your experience a good one. All the best, Gayle

Needs work

  • 2 of 5

While the cottages are cute and private and I enjoyed the location I was disappointed in their condition. I stayed there several years ago and they were in better condition then. On this stay the paint was chipping all around the baseboards and needs touched up, the bathroom door wouldn't close all the way and while appearing clean, the floors were filthy. After walking around barefoot my feet were totally black which made we wonder how well everything else was cleaned.

Owner's Response: We take our reviews very seriously and we thank you for taking the time to review our property. At the time of this stay, October, it was the end of our busy season. Since October, we have painted the interior walls and baseboards of our cottages. As for the cleanliness of our cottage, we can reassure future guests that we guarantee our cottages to be very clean. We employ a full-time housekeeping maid and our cottages are cleaned and vacuumed several times a week. How feet could get “totally black” or even slightly black is a mystery to us. We hope this does not discourage you from staying with us and having the opportunity to enjoy our unique Sonoma cottages. All the best…Gayle
