I've always been enchanted every time I've visited Mexico and in 2009 I made the leap to move to Merida in the Yucatan. This city is a unique place full of beautiful old colonial architecture, an interesting art scene, lots of free concerts and dance performances, and is close to many of the ancient Mayan ruins. The beautiful beaches are also close by. And the people of Merida are friendly--as they say, "muy tranquilo"! I'd be happy to share my lovely home with you during your stay in Merida and help you make the most fun out of your time here.
Kathleen White purchased this house in 2008
I chose Merida because it's a very safe part of Mexico! It's also tropical and beautiful and has lots of interesting things to explore. As a city, if offers museums and shopping and events but it's close to the beaches and the countryside and the Mayan sites. It has something for everyone!
Staying at El Ave Blanca B&B, you'll feel like you're visiting a friend in Merida, with access to the kitchen for fixing lunches or dinners, with personal attention from a native English speaker, with good proximity to all the tourist sights. All of this for extremely low rates including a delicious breakfast.
I think that the title tells you a lot! We spent two months here in 2016 and returned this year again! The main reason we return is Kathleen & Carlos's hospitality! We both take Spanish back home and love the opportunity to practice and both Kathleen and Carlos give us this opportunity in a gracious non-judgemental family setting. The house is comfortable and spacious and the yard and splash pool were delightful on those hot spring days. The house is located in a safe neighborhood and encourages walking for sightseeing and activities in the city. Come with a good attitude yourself. Then enjoy the pleasant adventure while your neighbors in the states are shoveling snow! Look for the many patios and porches if you want a quiet cool space for coffee!
I spent January at El Ave Blanca and could not have had a better experience. Kathleen is a wealth of information on things to do in the area.
The house is well-located for those who want to experience a real neighborhood but still be close to the tourist areas of Merida. It is close to bus routes but an easy walk both to the Centro and the Paseo de Montejo; I did not have a car and did not feel the need for one. On days when a taxi was needed, Kathleen called one for me as my Spanish is limited; the drivers were always courteous and helpful and the prices reasonable. Kathleen and Carlos also offered opportunities to accompany them to activities on several occasions, a graciousness much-appreciated by this first-time visitor.
The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable; the second-floor green room has both an ensuite bath and a private terrace. The cross-ventilation was so good that no air conditioning was needed even on unseasonably warm nights. Guests have kitchen privileges, and even with a full house, we all had plenty of shelf and refrigerator space. With front and back gardens, there was always a cool, shady place to read, visit with other guests, or play with the kitten who had recently taken up residence. The house and gardens are filled with artwork by Kathleen and others.
This is a delightful place to stay.
The house is not airconditioned, but has nice ceiling fans. I enjoyed it, and the company, very much. It was a easy walk to many interesting places.
My wife and I stayed with Kathleen and Carlos for three memorable weeks. They were super friendly hosts who made us feel right at home. It was our first time staying in a B&B. The house is located in a fairly quiet residential neighbourhood. We always felt safe walking home in the dark. It takes about 40 minutes to walk from their house to Plaza Grande, which is in the heart of Centro. We walked to and from town, and used taxis to get around because they are inexpensive. We were impressed by their house. It was always kept clean and tidy, and it was nicely decorated with some of Kathleen's own art work. A laundry room is on the premises. It was handy to be able to do our washing and drying for only 40 pesos. We were happy with our room. It was spacious, and it had a view of their lovely backyard. We enjoyed having our own large private bathroom, and sleeping on a comfortable queen size bed. The air conditioner was quiet and reliable so we always got a good night sleep. Breakfast was a real plus. Every day we woke up to a variety of homemade meals that were delicious. Fruits that were grown on Kathleen's property were included with breakfast. Kathleen went overboard in helping us figure out what to see and do in Merida. Since we didn't speak much Spanish she would make phone calls on our behalf, arrange tours, make reservations, and book taxis. This helped alleviate a lot of stress that we would have otherwise encountered. We highly recommend you stay with Kathleen and Carlos if you want to have an enjoyable vacation.
Lovely property, great hosts.
The location was great, close enough to walk to things, but quiet, the Centro area can be very loud.
We met other guests that were super nice.
Would highly recommend this VRBO
I stayed at the El Avenue Blanca for one month. April 14 to May 14, 2015. I was there for extensive dental work and was traveling alone. Being a 65 year old woman, it was difficult to stay in a hotel by myself. I would highly recommend this guest house, especially, for people traveling alone. Those who do not speak Spanish and do not know the city.
Kathleen and her family are very nice people. She was informative on places to visit and ways to spend the time I was not seeing the dentist. Also, she was able to call taxis for me - something I could not do myself since I do not speak Spanish.
Her inn is a reasonable place to spend time, and within reasonable walking distance to certain locations. If you stay with her for 1 month, you have your own bedroom and bathroom. You also have use of the kitchen, pool, CD library, garden areas and patios.
It was nice to have other people around me to talk to and share my adventures.
Again, I recommend her guest house for anyone traveling to Merida, Mexico for the first time.
