About Kathleen White

I've always been enchanted every time I've visited Mexico and in 2009 I made the leap to move to Merida in the Yucatan. This city is a unique place full of beautiful old colonial architecture, an interesting art scene, lots of free concerts and dance performances, and is close to many of the ancient Mayan ruins. The beautiful beaches are also close by. And the people of Merida are friendly--as they say, "muy tranquilo"! I'd be happy to share my lovely home with you during your stay in Merida and help you make the most fun out of your time here.

Kathleen White purchased this house in 2008

Why Kathleen White chose Centro

I chose Merida because it's a very safe part of Mexico! It's also tropical and beautiful and has lots of interesting things to explore. As a city, if offers museums and shopping and events but it's close to the beaches and the countryside and the Mayan sites. It has something for everyone!

What makes this house unique

Staying at El Ave Blanca B&B, you'll feel like you're visiting a friend in Merida, with access to the kitchen for fixing lunches or dinners, with personal attention from a native English speaker, with good proximity to all the tourist sights. All of this for extremely low rates including a delicious breakfast.

Great hosts, close to Centro

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Kathleen and Carlos’ home. They were very helpful and provided trourist information. We were very close to everything and the streets are numbered so its easy to get around. It is relatively quiet neighbourhood. Kathleen provided a good breakfast and was eager to please. Lovely garden and pool in the back yard.

Relaxing environment, friendly hosts, lovely outside area and all within walking distance of centro.

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place to base yourself for time in Merida. Situated in a local neighbourhood but within walking distance of the centre and major sights. Whilst it’s nominally a B&B, in practice Kathleen and Carlos allow you to have the chance to just go about your business, e.g. we were able to prepare our own coffee and breakfast (because that’s what we wished) but all the ingredients and equipment were freely available. The room was spacious with both a fan and air conditioning. There’s a lovely back garden where you can have breakfast, read a book, or just sit with a beer and a cigar if that’s what you like. Our only small criticism would be the lack of curtains in the room we were in, it gets very bright very early, though we mentioned this at time and Kathleen is going to have a think about this. Other than that we would have no hesitation recommending this as a place to stay.

Our second visit to Merida & Kathleen & Carlos!

  • 5 of 5

I think that the title tells you a lot! We spent two months here in 2016 and returned this year again! The main reason we return is Kathleen & Carlos's hospitality! We both take Spanish back home and love the opportunity to practice and both Kathleen and Carlos give us this opportunity in a gracious non-judgemental family setting. The house is comfortable and spacious and the yard and splash pool were delightful on those hot spring days. The house is located in a safe neighborhood and encourages walking for sightseeing and activities in the city. Come with a good attitude yourself. Then enjoy the pleasant adventure while your neighbors in the states are shoveling snow! Look for the many patios and porches if you want a quiet cool space for coffee!

A great base for exploring Merida

  • 5 of 5

I spent January at El Ave Blanca and could not have had a better experience. Kathleen is a wealth of information on things to do in the area.

The house is well-located for those who want to experience a real neighborhood but still be close to the tourist areas of Merida. It is close to bus routes but an easy walk both to the Centro and the Paseo de Montejo; I did not have a car and did not feel the need for one. On days when a taxi was needed, Kathleen called one for me as my Spanish is limited; the drivers were always courteous and helpful and the prices reasonable. Kathleen and Carlos also offered opportunities to accompany them to activities on several occasions, a graciousness much-appreciated by this first-time visitor.

The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable; the second-floor green room has both an ensuite bath and a private terrace. The cross-ventilation was so good that no air conditioning was needed even on unseasonably warm nights. Guests have kitchen privileges, and even with a full house, we all had plenty of shelf and refrigerator space. With front and back gardens, there was always a cool, shady place to read, visit with other guests, or play with the kitten who had recently taken up residence. The house and gardens are filled with artwork by Kathleen and others.

This is a delightful place to stay.

The house is not airconditioned, but has nice ceiling fans. I enjoyed it, and the company, very much. It was a easy walk to many interesting places.

Kathleen's Excellent B&B

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed with Kathleen and Carlos for three memorable weeks. They were super friendly hosts who made us feel right at home. It was our first time staying in a B&B. The house is located in a fairly quiet residential neighbourhood. We always felt safe walking home in the dark. It takes about 40 minutes to walk from their house to Plaza Grande, which is in the heart of Centro. We walked to and from town, and used taxis to get around because they are inexpensive. We were impressed by their house. It was always kept clean and tidy, and it was nicely decorated with some of Kathleen's own art work. A laundry room is on the premises. It was handy to be able to do our washing and drying for only 40 pesos. We were happy with our room. It was spacious, and it had a view of their lovely backyard. We enjoyed having our own large private bathroom, and sleeping on a comfortable queen size bed. The air conditioner was quiet and reliable so we always got a good night sleep. Breakfast was a real plus. Every day we woke up to a variety of homemade meals that were delicious. Fruits that were grown on Kathleen's property were included with breakfast. Kathleen went overboard in helping us figure out what to see and do in Merida. Since we didn't speak much Spanish she would make phone calls on our behalf, arrange tours, make reservations, and book taxis. This helped alleviate a lot of stress that we would have otherwise encountered. We highly recommend you stay with Kathleen and Carlos if you want to have an enjoyable vacation.
