This was our family's fourth trip to the Bahamas and probably the best. The crystal clear waters of the Exumas are unparalleled with any in the Caribbean. Enough activities to entertain a family of teenagers; snorkeling the grotto, swimming at the site of a watery plane crash, colorful reefs nearby to explore and stellar beaches to walk. Pig beach was a hit as well as the nearby Iguana beach. The kindness and generosity of the locals was unlike any other visit we have experienced. Our stay at Lorraine's Cottages was a perfect match for our family of five. A kitchen geared up for cooking, a beach a stone throw away and a restaurant within walking distance to eat at if you weren't in the mood to cook. Also Lorraine's mother bakes delicious fresh bread every day. Absolutely perfect! We hired Lorraine's son Mali for 2 days which was totally worthwhile and I definitely would recommend this experience. Surely a vacation that could easily be repeated.
Last minute change in plans became our favorite part of the trip.
After reading the reviews about the long ride over from Nassau on speedboats we decided to look at the options for flying over. If you going to fly over, might as well spend a night and see more? Ended up being our favorite part of the trip. Lorraine arranged everything for us. Her son, Malachi, does tours and so it worked out perfect. Flew into Staniel Cay and he was there waiting on us. Steps to the boat from the airport and we were off for the day to see the swimming bigs, Thunderball Grotto, huge sand bar, swim with nurse sharks a couple cays down the line, back to Staniel Cay Yacht club for lunch, iguana island, and then Black Point. What an amazing day surrounded by beautiful water.
Once on Great Guana Cay Lorraine gave us access to a golf cart for getting around (but we had also rented both cabins). Cabins were very clean and the AC worked great. No internet (when we were there), but there is good cell phone service. Kitchens had a few things, but we ended up eating Lorraine's restaurant while on the island. I think there are 2 or 3 more restaurants on the island depending on the season. The cabin set on a small bluff overlooking a shallow and are steps from the beach. The bay is huge but very shallow. The water recedes hundred of yards with low tide.
The next day we had an evening flight, so spent most of the day on a crescent beach on the other end of Great Guana Cay (recommend by Malachi). About a 15-minute golf cart ride. We had the entire beach to ourselves during the week of Thanksgiving! Idyllic setting. Had lunch back at Lorraine's and then Malachi to us the 15-20 minute boat ride back to Staniel Cay for the flight back to Nassau. We had a few beers at the yacht club while waiting for the plane. (We flew in and out of Staniel Cay because of limited flights to Great Guana Cay.
Looking forward to the next trip to the Exumas!
A beautiful place in paradise!
We had such a great time in Black Point. Lorraine's house was perfect for our family of five. Lorraine and her family are such gracious hosts. They were completely attentive to any needs we had. Her son made our trip a blast! He took us on a day trip to see the swimming pigs, iguana island, and swimming with sharks. He also took us out for an evening of fishing. He is an amazingly respectful young man that really added an element of fun to our stay! The people of Black Point are super friendly and willing to chat with tourists who happen to be walking by or sitting on the dock watching them clean their catch of the morning. Lorraine's restaurant is top notch cooking and a really fun place to hang out at night and have a drink or two. We went to Lorraine's church and met her very sweet mother who happens to make the most amazing bread ever! Make sure you buy some!! If you are looking for a peaceful get away where you can have quality time as a family and meet some new people that we now consider family, then go to Black Point and stay at Lorraine's.
Our family of 6 stayed here for 3 nights as part of my daughter's make-a-wish trip. The house had everything we needed and sits in between two separate beaches both an easy walk. The island is beautiful. It is just a short boat ride away from pig beach which was what my daughter wished for. The absolute best thing about the island is Lorraine! She is an amazing person and her cooking can't be beat! She made sure that we were well taken care of and made my daughter's wish so special.
Thanks a lot your family was awesome an we hope to see you again .the girls were like family to us love you all see you all soon lots of love Rolles family
Good value and location
This cottage has been nicely redone inside and has most everything you need for a weeklong stay. There is a road between the house and the beach, but don't let that be a factor, since only about 1 car goes past per hour. The east-side beach and bay are right there and good for hours of relaxing in nice sand and 2-3 foot, crystal clear water, when the tide is in. The west-side beaches and blowhole are super scenic but are strewn with garbage, and the waves were too rough to go in very far while I was there (and I like rough waves). It is a short walk to town and Lorraine's cafe (excellent) and Mom's bread (do it!). No internet at the house, but we were shocked to discover our T-mobile phones had free coverage there. The cell coverage was not highly reliable, nor was the water pressure. The water quality was surprisingly high, drink as much as you like, no filtering needed. The air conditioners were powerful and kept the house at any temperature you liked. The house had an inflatable kayak, but it was in bad shape, and we were unable to rent a better one, nor a paddleboard. If you are looking for an affordable house and a week of relaxing, this is it!
