Beautiful, architecturally significant Arts and Crafts house. Located in North Oakland, not far from the Berkeley border.
It was recently designated a 'Heritage Property' by the City of Oakland. It is named 'The Walter Upward House' after its first owner, who commissioned his spec house with the Strang Brother Builders. Mr. Upward's headstone may be found at the beautiful Mountain View Cemetery, 5 blocks away. (Mountain View is like a park, and it is not a surprise that it was designed by Fredrick Olmstead, the landscape architect of Central Park.)
The house, 1888 sf, on a 6029 sf lot, is two blocks off Piedmont Avenue. (The location is North Oakland, NOT Piedmont). It is on a four-block street in a wonderful neighborhood, deemed extremely desirable by local realtors, who refer to living here as 'The Piedmont Avenue Lifestyle'.
'Walter' has two full bathrooms and a half bath. The largest of the bathrooms has a center-fill, oversize, symmetrical tub, found is upscale homes and mansions of the early 20th century. It also possesses two pedestal 'lavatories' (sinks), a round-tank toilet, and a footbath. The smallest of the bedrooms has its own half bathroom and a queen sleeper sofa. The brand new, sage-colored 'American Leather' sleeper sofa in the living room, is king sized and extremely comfortable.
Two of Walter's three bedrooms are large. The third bedroom is small, but has its own private half-bath. A high end, comfortable leather king sleeper sofa is in the living room.
Piedmont Avenue has a movie theater w/ 3 screens, wonderful restaurants (the best of them recently opened by students of Alice Waters: Dopo, Adesso, Gregoire's & Cesar's), La Farine Bakery, Cafe Trieste, Peets, a Russian Deli, flower shops, beauty shops, coffee shops, gift stores and historic Piedmont Grocery with its terrific meat market. Citibank, Wells Fargo, St. Leos Catholic church are on Piedmont Avenue, and the post office is a block and a half off away.
But most importantly: FENTONS Creamery is 3 blocks away!!!!
In the other direction is a shopping center with Safeway, a CVS drug store, coffee shops, Bank of America and Chase banks are here also.
The house has a walk score of 98! It is a walkers paradise.
UC Berkeley is 2.2 miles away. School of the Arts and Kaiser Oakland are a 10-minute walk away. Trans Bay and downtown Oakland transportation is a 2 block walk.
North Oakland has plenty of parking (unlike San Francisco.) Plus at Walter Upward, you get 3 off-street parking spaces.
North Oakland has the benefit of temperate weather most all year round.
There is a filtered view of the Golden Gate bridge from the upper floor.

I work overseas and came to the U.S. to be close to friends and family to have my baby and a 3-month maternity leave. We were overjoyed to find the Walter Upward House, it felt like home away from home and we did not want to leave! This craftsman style home is absolutely gorgeous with beautiful mahogany wood and charming character and decor; especially the bathrooms with their antique sinks and bathtub. It was wonderfully spacious, particularly the living room area, which was essential for us in accomodating visitors to see our new baby and for our family visiting from out of town. We used all three bedrooms at different times, the upstairs room was particularly cozy and we set up the adjacent room as an office. The living room and dining room were lovely and perfect for hosting visits/dinners; we had both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner there! The kitchen was perfectly stocked (with ample dishes, pots, pans, serving dishes, placemats, cutlery, dishwasher, coffeemaker, microwave, plus soaps, dish detergent and staple food items) and was absolutely great for cooking. The kitchen also received lots of sunlight and was very comfortable and enjoyable for daily breakfasts with the baby in the bouncer. (The house also has a pack-n-play and high chair for use). The backyard was absolutely delightful and we had many lunches outside overlooking the herb and fruit garden; it was such a treasure! Above all, Heidi and Jim were just wonderful and were just a phone call away and very close by, if we had any questions or needs. We received lots of packages for the baby and the porch made it easy for UPS and FedEx to drop items when we weren't home. The Piedmont neighborhood is safe, peaceful and lovely and I often took walks with my baby in the carrier, down Piedmont Avenue, just 3 blocks away. Piedmont Avenue has lots of shops, cafes, restaurants, spas, salons, grocery stores, a CVS, a movie theater and post office and it was just great for people-watching overall. A large Safeway grocery store is 2 blocks away and the 580 freeway is probably 5 minutes away so this made the location perfect. This home was absolutely perfect in every way and met all of our needs. All of our visitors were so charmed by the house and everyone admired the beauty of the interior and exterior. We stayed until our baby was 3 months old so it really felt like home (and was her first home)! I would absolutely recommend the Walter Upward House and we hope to stay there again in the future!
We had a wonderful stay at The Walter Upward house. The location was perfect and the home so comfortable! Our older kids loved walking to Piedmont. Thanks Heidi, for a great stay!
We had a wonderful stay at Walter Upward house. It was perfect for our family, so comfortable and close to everything!
The house was even better than the description, the pictures didn't do it justice. It was clean and well-maintained, all the furnishings perfect for the home! The owner was readily available and helpful. Piedmont Avenue is within walking distance and you can find great restaurants, shopping and other activities there. I would highly recommend the Walter to my friends and relatives. My family would love to stay there again.
The house was meticulous.
Beautiful historic house and the owners were gracious
Heidi has created a great vacation rental at Walter Upward - it's a house that's full of character with a unique ambiance. Our family enjoyed both the antique nature of the house interior and the quite sanctuary of the garden. Heidi provided us with a detailed guide to the house before our arrival and everything was well planned. We found ourselves spending more time on Piedmont Ave as originally expected; it's a street with many interesting shops, restaurants, and cafes. A great vacation rental!
