First of all, welcome to SOBRE SUR GRANDE. Hopefully your visit will be as wonderful for you as owning this place has been for me. Sobre Sur Grande is a 2 1/2 acre site. Please enjoy it as your own. I’ve designed the home to give guests maximum privacy.
We offer two choices: El Apartamento and La Casita
Rates range from $195 for El Apartamento in January and February to $500 for La Casita in the summer, higher for more than 2 guests, holidays etc; plus cleaning….So call, text, or email me for specific details.
My primary goal is to have guests feel the pictures don’t do our places justice. I hate it when I go to a place only to be disappointed. That said, hopefully the photos will give you a taste. Take a look at the reviews and I hope you’ll get a sense of visitors’ appreciation.
El Apartamento is the ground floor of the main house in a one or two bedroom option. It has a private entrance, its own hot tub, a two room suite with Stearns and Foster King Bed, a kitchenette for light cooking including a Breville compact over, microwave and Gaggia espresso machine, gas barbeque, bath with deep soaking tub, and most of all, killer views.
I designed La Casita for those seeking a totally 'cush yet private escape. When I decided to build it, the first thing i bought was the Wetstyle two person soaking tub...I actually designed the house around the tub! It sits in the bedroom, with a 5x8 window to the south east, looking down into an oak forest, and an 8’ sliding glass door with views to Rocky Creek Canyon and the Pacific Ocean to the south west. A pair of high powered binoculars is available to explore the canyon and ocean beyond
The bedroom has a king Airloome bed, with the tub and a river rock lined shower, complemented with thick terry cloth robes for lounging. The bedroom is heated by a 220v electic heater, as well as NuHeat radiant heat in the floor surrounding the bed. The bathroom features a Toto toilet, and a commode with glass vessel sink looking out into the oak forest.
If you do get past the bedroom, there is a full living room/kitchen with Miele washer/dryer, professional gas range, and and American Leather queen sleeper sofa. The living room also has a 60 inch internet/satellite tv, with wifi available, and a contemporary gas fireplace.
There are shoji screens between the two rooms offering a modicum of privacy, if you are more than two guests, but it is really special for a couple.
There are two decks, accessible from each room through twin 8 foot sliding doors...The ceilings are up to 16' high, with a clerestory design affording a feeling of light and openness.
I am a yoga teacher who still manages to enjoy the pleasures of good food, wine and company.
And while peace and tranquility were my main goals , a bit of indulgence was also in the cards..So whether it's the hot tub under the stars (for your exclusive use), the 60" flat screen tv, or simply lounging around in the SobreSurGrande terry cloth robes, i've tried to anticipate your needs...If anything is missing, let me know....I get to exercise my inner travel agent!!!
Located on a promontory, 1200 feet above the Pacific, Sobre Sur Grande offers unobstructed views of the ocean, Rocky Creek Watershed and the Ventana Wilderness. Yet it is only 30 minutes from Carmel and a few more to the center of Big Sur, along one of most beautiful 'commutes' in the world. You might just choose to stay home watching the raptors glide on the thermals rising up from the canyon below, then call our private chef, yoga teachers and body workers to come to you. If you're seeking adventure, jump in your car for a lovely drive to Carmel for golf, wineries, shopping and an indulgent dinner, or simply drive a couple of miles to any number of amazing hiking trails
Sobre Sur Grande is 2.5 miles up Palo Colorado Road, with it's majestic redwoods and year round creek, then an additional 3/10 miles up a private road. Mill Creek Redwood Preserve is close by and the Botcher's Gap access to Ventana Wilderness provides the most amazing hiking opportunities. Down at the coast, Rocky Creek Restaurant offers incredible ocean front views and a great place to walk (or drive) . You're close to the best beach in Big Sur where Garrapata Creek empties into the Pacific. It's spectacular, yet completely accessible to families.
But if all these options are too hard to choose between, select from these INDULGENCE PACKAGES, priced based upon number of guests:
For the two of you, begin with a special dinner, Champagne and dessert, wake to breakfast prepared for you, then after a few hours a private yoga session for you whether you've never practiced or are very experienced. You'll end with a 3 hour pampering/massage treatment for each of you (male or female).
Includes 1/2 day hike with a knowledgable Big Sur guide, two 60 minute massages from Christina, and dinner from a private chef.
Stay Home and Spa:
If leaving the house seems just too tough, you'll begin with a gentle private yoga session, then a 90 minute massage/pampering treatment, and a spa menu dinner:
Let Me Eat Cake.
Begins with a special sweet treat from Jamie on your arrival, a wonderful dinner, a special dessert, then pastries and treats for breakfast. There's definitely chocolate in here!
Most of all, I want you to come, relax and enjoy the special feelings that come from being Above Big Sur.
My motto is 'Start Slow....then Taper Off'
I originally built the main with my son, trying to honor the spectacular location; I enjoyed converting homes into vacation rentals and try to give my guests the feeling of coming home rather than to a rental. I hope you'll feel familiar and welcome as that is my goal. I teach yoga, and spend time here in Big Sur writing.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this house in 1980
It offers a truly unique view of the sea, in an unparalleled private and secluded setting
While practicing yoga downstairs, a wide variety of local 'residents' visit: Rabbits, Quail, Deer make the surroundings their playground. Hawks and other predator birds sail on the thermals right off the deck, and the sunsets and full moon-sets are unforgettable. Two remarkable private chefs live close by, as well as a fabulous massage therapist. I offer private yoga lessons, and can arrange a private yoga retreat for couples that includes yoga in morning and evening, day hikes throughout the area, and wonderful meals.
YOur place is fantastic! The kids loved the big tub, & the adults loved the spectacular views and the silence that ensued, once said children were laid to rest!.
Such a wonderful home and location. We stayed on the smaller La Casita, which was perfect for a couples retreat. Additionally Tony was very kind and professional, he really helped us out in a pinch after we had some issues with our previous vacation plans. The property is even more beautiful than the photos are able to demonstrate, and has all the comforts of home. We particularly liked the soaking tub, and the well stocked and outfitted kitchen. Thanks again Tony, and will certainly plan to return!
We had a last minute wedding come up in Big Sur and were immediately concerned about where to stay. Luckily after some searching we came across Tony's property. He could not have made the process any easier. The house is set in and amazing location on the hills overlooking the coast. Tony provided detail directions with turn by turn photos which made it incredibly easy to find (not one of the three couples had any trouble finding the house (even the late arrival). The house itself is very welcoming and comfortable. The bedrooms are outfitted with comfortable beds and ample space. Everything was impeccably clean and well maintained (and exactly as described in the listing). We enjoyed the deck and the hot tub, taking in amazing views and sunshine between wedding duties. With just a short drive down to the 1 we squeezed in a quick coastal run and visit to the beach. While we were not able to take advantage on this trip, I have in the past hiked many of the nearby trails which offer tones of access to the best that Big Sur has to offer. We certainly hope to stay again during our next visit.
We have just returned to the UK after spending a wonderful vacation touring the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway and undoubtedly one of the highlights of our vacation was the time we spent at the fabulous La Casa Principal at Sobre Sur Grande.
The drive through the redwoods up to La Casa Principal is simply stunning. The house is located above the tree line at the top of a steep and narrow private lane and is well worth the drive as the views of the valley and the ocean are breath-taking and the photos do not do it justice.
Tony, the owner, is a pleasure to deal with and nothing seems too much trouble; from recommending restaurants in San Francisco, to offering advice on places to stay further along the PCH. Tony has thought of everything and has equipped the house to suit all needs, and the extra special welcome touches really do make you instantly feel at home.
The views are amazing, watching the sunrise from the master bedroom or the balcony and seeing the sunset over the valley from the hot tub are not to be missed.
The property was spotlessly clean and we would not hesitate in recommending the property to friends or family.
Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer!
What a great place...perfect for a girls trip/getaway...there were 6 of us!! Tony greeted us and then left us to it, but left very elaborate directions for everything...his house is very accommodating and has
everything you would need in the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom!
Once you get up to the house...( it is a little bit of a trek) you don't want to leave! We had breakfast and cooked dinner every night and sat out on the patio enjoying the amazing view and the magical sky and air! Had one day in Carmel, one day in Big Sur and 1 day hiking, all beautiful! The last night we had a sky filled with more stars then any of us had ever seen! GORGEOUS. Would love to make it a yearly trip and would highly recommend this house to anyone!
We stayed at La Casita for an impromptu get away. The cabin is absolutely beautiful and the views are breathtaking. I'm so glad we chose this place isntead of staying at some of the hotels nearby. Waking up in the morning to a view of the green, redwood covered hills, covered in a sea of fog was one of the most memorable moments of our little get away.
This was a last minute get away and we hadn't done a lot of planning but Tony made it easy for us. From the minute that we contacted him he was an absolute pleasure to work with. He accomodated our very tight timeline and gave us super detailed instructions on how to get to the cabin.
I only wish we could have stayed longer. Highly recommended.
The property is located in the mountains of Big Sur, but not difficult to find off Highway 1. The environment surrounding the property is absolutely stunning. Owner had done a great job on the landscape and the view from the entire house and balcony are spectacular. In the morning and sunset, the famous fog of Big Sur sets in. During the day, one can lie on the comfortable recliner on the balcony in the mild sunlight or sit on the grassland area right outside the bedrooms.
Owner had thought of every single detail possible to make the guests feel comfortable. From the facilities, to quantity of bathtowels, to the quality of the throw on the lazy boy chair in the living room. Our family felt pampered. We dined outside for breakfast and lunch everyday, and cooked some decent dinners during our stay.
We loved our family reunion staying at Tony's property. We will come back again for sure!!
Easy access to Ventana Wilderness and hiking throughout Big Sur.
