About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Den, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

We are located 20 minutes from shops and restaurants up in the mountains by the Carmel River and Los Padres Dam. There is a winding road through the mountains, so if you don't like curvy roads, this might not be your journey.

For those who'd like to nourish themselves in nature, you can kick back, relax, and get rejuvenated for the coming season. You will feel a sense of peacefulness the minute you step foot on this special piece of property.

The Bunkhouse Suite is 400 square feet, with a 200 square foot deck. The rock walls that were built in the 1940's have lichen growing on them because the air is so pure.

If you want a place to get away from it all, this is it. The property is unique with the old hitching posts still in place from the original owners, and the lucky horseshoes hanging. Start off your day sitting on the private back deck with cup in your hand, and let the weight fall off your shoulders. The stars are so clear and bright away from all the city lights, they really do put on a show at night. Or just sit by the pond and watch the ducks without a care in the world.

Take a hike to the Carmel River or further up to the Los Padres Dam.

So if you're ready to get away from the maddening crowds, and just chill,,,,this is your place,,,a sweet country retreat.

There is another cottage on the property (737204), Dove Cottage, if you have family or friends you'd like to spend some time with.

Keywords: Tranquil setting with a deck overlooking a creek (seasonal)

About Rose Merrill

Me and my favorite duck, he always wants a hug. I'm a singer/songwriter, and find this area to be the perfect place to do my writing. I wrote all the songs for my first CD up here by the stream. I love this property, and am working on a project now to have small, private concerts for local artists. Although I enjoy socializing, at the end of the day, there's no place like this place to forget the 'who's who, and the what's what'. Waking in the morning to the sound of the birds singing is my favorite alarm clock. I love spending time in the garden surrounded by my animals.

Jeff loves to golf and there are plenty of courses on the Pennisula. Another one of his passions is retstoring vintage cars. He has a 68 Camero always ready to be fired up.

Rose Merrill purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Rose Merrill chose Central Coast California

The weather is the main reason I love this place. The fog may linger in Carmel and Monterey, but not here. I can totally relax here, just something in the air. Warm sunshine, clean air, and healing sounds of nature, with some treasures of days gone by.

What makes this cottage unique

Spacious and adorable with a sense of calm. The deck is a great place to connect with nature, create, with mother nature. You can use the outdoor grill and sink with plenty of utensils. The Bunkhouse Suite is a sweet retreat decorated with pieces that have been collected from old farmhouses. An extra large shower, with windows in every room. Open up the windows, get some fresh air, and connect to the sounds of nature. There really are a billion stars in the sky,,,,you can see them from the deck at night. Some of the furnishings came out of an old bunkhouse on the farm where I grew up, and I've always treasured them, so when I was putting the old bureau in the bedroom, bunkhouse suite became the name.

Maybe in the summer if you are looking for a very basic accomadation but still over priced

  • 1 of 5

We booked the bunkhouse in Dec on a family trip.

We were under the impression that when they advertised cooking facilities it meant a stove and/or an oven and a sink INSIDE the house. But what we got was a bar b que and cold water only sink on the back deck. Maybe in the summer it would of been ok????.

The bunkhouse was heated by a small portable heater that just couldn't keep up with the cold weather.

Second queen bed was actually a very uncomfortable old fold out couch.

But the final straw was that in the morning we woke to frozen pipes. No hot running water. And the cold water that did come out of the pipes later in the day was rusty brown.

We did contact the owner and she did get the hot water working eventually and she did offer to do our dishes as the outside sink didnt work.

The price we paid for our stay certainty didnt reflect the quality of the room or amenities.

Overall it was a very very disappointing experience.

Owner's Response: It's too bad Jill didn't take the time to look at the photos and read the description of The Bunkhouse. The photos clearly show an outdoor sink and BBQ. Inside is the toaster oven, small fridge and microwave. It's also listed a sofa/sleeper for extra guests. The day of Jill's stay (which was our coldest day of the year, the water heater went out for the outside sink. My husband went to town, and replaced it with a brand new one). It was 18 degrees that morning, and yes, the pipes did freeze, and when they do, the water will look brownish from the frozen pipes immediately upon the water returning. It goes away, and isn't harmful, you just have to flush the toilet once or twice. It's the first time in 10 years that I've rented this place anyone has complained about not enough heat. I'd like to also address the price. I received $395.60 for 4 guests for 2 nights. That comes out to $49.45/person. With that money I had 4 loads of laundry, pay the cleaning lady, and although I love sharing this place with others, I still like to make some money at the end of the day. I don't think you can even stay at a motel 6 for that amount, and you wouldn't get a deck with a BBQ grill, and quaintness this place has to offer. But, maybe that's where you'd be more comfortable.

Just what we needed!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at The Bunkhouse. The accommodations were just as advertised and their new grill was perfect for barbecuing the steaks we had bought on our way up from Harris Ranch. The bed was heavenly and we appreciated the organic bath products and homemade banana bread for our morning coffee. We arrived later than we had anticipated after dark, but, Rose greeted us with a welcoming smile and we enjoyed listening to her music on the cd player.

Had a wonderful stay in a funky cozy place.

We were looking for a one night stay at the last minute and this property fit the bill! Easy access (happy we drove during the day as the road is windy, narrow and not lit) and provided the getaway feeling we were hoping for!

Charming ranch cottage

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful experience at a charming cottage, gorgeous countryside and mountains. The most peaceful and quiet retreat we visited. Our hosts were really enjoyable and the dog was a blast! Thank you for opening your home to us!

Just what the Doctor ordered - like living in a Steinbeck Book.

  • 5 of 5

We found The Bunkhouse when looking for a place with easy access to Laguna Seca for the races. We wanted quiet, cozy, and something genuine. This place was all of that and a couple of fresh baked muffins to boot!

This cute little bunkhouse sits on a beautiful property tucked down in the valley. When we pulled up, the light was magical, and it literally felt like we were taking a step back in time. Yes, the bunkhouse is kind of tiny, but tiny in the most romantic and cozy sense of the word. We were in love with it the moment we pulled in. Rose and Jeff were so warm and friendly and accommodating that we felt immediately at home. We poked around the property where there were ducks and chickens and little doves, the native wild flowers and the decomposed granite really added a special "you're not in the city anymore" timeless charm to the whole property.

We live on a marsh in Marin County, so we are used to the peace and quiet that comes with living out of the hustle of an urban setting, but my goodness, this was some next level serenity. The bed was so comfortable that we were both nothing short of amazed. I loved the old windows, and the simple coziness of everything. The couches were comfy, the dining table was right out of Steinbeck's Sweet Thursday. We found that we didn't want to leave, and I found myself seriously re-thinking my career, and considering quitting everything and moving to the valley to live and work on this little ranch. There is no 'proper' kitchen in the house, but it has absolutely everything you could need to do all of your cooking out on the deck. We made the most amazing meals there, and slept so comfortably, that we still talk about it now.

Access to the track was great. It's about a half hour's drive, but the roads (if you like driving) were nothing short of amazing. There are 2 routes to the property, and both were a treat. I kept wanting to drive back and forth just for the fun of it.

Ruby the dog is a tireless little love bug, who makes you feel like she was your dog all along from the moment you meet. She's not in your face or anything like that, but if you want a buddy to play fetch with, you couldn't ask for a better girl.

The bunkhouse is not a 5 star all inclusive trip, it's a true to form country house, and left us feeling like we'd found a true home away from home, and can't wait to return and just stay on the property and read and relax, melting into the old time vibe of the place. Just beautiful.
