We are located 20 minutes from shops and restaurants up in the mountains by the Carmel River and Los Padres Dam. There is a winding road through the mountains, so if you don't like curvy roads, this might not be your journey.
For those who'd like to nourish themselves in nature, you can kick back, relax, and get rejuvenated for the coming season. You will feel a sense of peacefulness the minute you step foot on this special piece of property.
The Bunkhouse Suite is 400 square feet, with a 200 square foot deck. The rock walls that were built in the 1940's have lichen growing on them because the air is so pure.
If you want a place to get away from it all, this is it. The property is unique with the old hitching posts still in place from the original owners, and the lucky horseshoes hanging. Start off your day sitting on the private back deck with cup in your hand, and let the weight fall off your shoulders. The stars are so clear and bright away from all the city lights, they really do put on a show at night. Or just sit by the pond and watch the ducks without a care in the world.
Take a hike to the Carmel River or further up to the Los Padres Dam.
So if you're ready to get away from the maddening crowds, and just chill,,,,this is your place,,,a sweet country retreat.
There is another cottage on the property (737204), Dove Cottage, if you have family or friends you'd like to spend some time with.

Me and my favorite duck, he always wants a hug. I'm a singer/songwriter, and find this area to be the perfect place to do my writing. I wrote all the songs for my first CD up here by the stream. I love this property, and am working on a project now to have small, private concerts for local artists. Although I enjoy socializing, at the end of the day, there's no place like this place to forget the 'who's who, and the what's what'. Waking in the morning to the sound of the birds singing is my favorite alarm clock. I love spending time in the garden surrounded by my animals.
Jeff loves to golf and there are plenty of courses on the Pennisula. Another one of his passions is retstoring vintage cars. He has a 68 Camero always ready to be fired up.
Rose Merrill purchased this cottage in 2006
The weather is the main reason I love this place. The fog may linger in Carmel and Monterey, but not here. I can totally relax here, just something in the air. Warm sunshine, clean air, and healing sounds of nature, with some treasures of days gone by.
Spacious and adorable with a sense of calm. The deck is a great place to connect with nature, create, with mother nature. You can use the outdoor grill and sink with plenty of utensils. The Bunkhouse Suite is a sweet retreat decorated with pieces that have been collected from old farmhouses. An extra large shower, with windows in every room. Open up the windows, get some fresh air, and connect to the sounds of nature. There really are a billion stars in the sky,,,,you can see them from the deck at night. Some of the furnishings came out of an old bunkhouse on the farm where I grew up, and I've always treasured them, so when I was putting the old bureau in the bedroom, bunkhouse suite became the name.
Wonderful experience at a charming cottage, gorgeous countryside and mountains. The most peaceful and quiet retreat we visited. Our hosts were really enjoyable and the dog was a blast! Thank you for opening your home to us!
We found The Bunkhouse when looking for a place with easy access to Laguna Seca for the races. We wanted quiet, cozy, and something genuine. This place was all of that and a couple of fresh baked muffins to boot!
This cute little bunkhouse sits on a beautiful property tucked down in the valley. When we pulled up, the light was magical, and it literally felt like we were taking a step back in time. Yes, the bunkhouse is kind of tiny, but tiny in the most romantic and cozy sense of the word. We were in love with it the moment we pulled in. Rose and Jeff were so warm and friendly and accommodating that we felt immediately at home. We poked around the property where there were ducks and chickens and little doves, the native wild flowers and the decomposed granite really added a special "you're not in the city anymore" timeless charm to the whole property.
We live on a marsh in Marin County, so we are used to the peace and quiet that comes with living out of the hustle of an urban setting, but my goodness, this was some next level serenity. The bed was so comfortable that we were both nothing short of amazed. I loved the old windows, and the simple coziness of everything. The couches were comfy, the dining table was right out of Steinbeck's Sweet Thursday. We found that we didn't want to leave, and I found myself seriously re-thinking my career, and considering quitting everything and moving to the valley to live and work on this little ranch. There is no 'proper' kitchen in the house, but it has absolutely everything you could need to do all of your cooking out on the deck. We made the most amazing meals there, and slept so comfortably, that we still talk about it now.
Access to the track was great. It's about a half hour's drive, but the roads (if you like driving) were nothing short of amazing. There are 2 routes to the property, and both were a treat. I kept wanting to drive back and forth just for the fun of it.
Ruby the dog is a tireless little love bug, who makes you feel like she was your dog all along from the moment you meet. She's not in your face or anything like that, but if you want a buddy to play fetch with, you couldn't ask for a better girl.
The bunkhouse is not a 5 star all inclusive trip, it's a true to form country house, and left us feeling like we'd found a true home away from home, and can't wait to return and just stay on the property and read and relax, melting into the old time vibe of the place. Just beautiful.
This was the most enjoyable place we stayed out of our entire 9 nights in California. Peaceful and pleasant and friendly. A small store nearby at this otherwise out-of-the-way hideaway was useful. Meeting Rose was a real treat, too. We'll be back. Mark and Iris.
I always look to the snug well-appointed Bunkhouse when I want to "get out of Dodge". A stay at Rose's Bunkhouse is so rejuvenating. Far enough from the bustle of Carmel, you can slow yourself down if you want to. Yet close enough to town to attend shows, go wine tasting, nursery hopping, gallery touring, shopping, tide-pooling. Magnificent mountain and coastal scenery to refresh the soul. Or just hang out at the bunkhouse and relax, play with the dogs, soak in the slow pace of life and the clean air!
Rose is a personable and thoughtful host with an attention to details to make your stay memorable. I really enjoy star gazing and birding from the front step or stream-side deck. Lots of wildflowers this spring of 2016, too! I like to drive in from the Tassajara Rd side, after coming in from Greenfield -Arroyo Seco on Upper Carmel Valley Rd. It doesn't take any longer and is quiet and scenic. Much of Upper Carmel Vlly Rd has been repaved--yay!
We had a great stay at Rose and Jeff's getaway. It's a ways out of town, but the quiet and calm were a nice way to end the day and start the morning. There were dogs, cat, chickens, ducks and even a few brand new baby doves - a nice change from city life. The bungalow itself had a comfy bed and couches, and most everything we needed to cook dinner. Sadly it was too cloudy to see stars but I bet when the skies clear, it's quite a sight. Really nice little getaway!
We really enjoyed our stay here...we attended several car events in Carmel Valley during Concourse week...all the hotels were booked by the time we decided to go, so I looked on VRBO and found Jeff & Rose Merrill's place. We had a good experience with a VRBO last year in Oregon, so we thought we'd give it another try. So glad we did! It's a little bit of a drive down into town, but worth getting back to our own little "bunkhouse" at the end of the day to grill dinner outdoors under the stars! Everything we needed was there, all we did was go to Safeway in town and pick up some steaks, veggies and of course artichoke for grilling! Cozy bedroom, nice little bathroom, and the two sofas were perfect for napping after hot days walking around in the sun looking at cars. The lack of a TV was actually a plus, we had wifi for our smart phones, and a CD player which we used a lot for ambiance...what a relaxing stay! There are two roads in and out, both windy, narrow and dangerous, however, make sure to arrive during the day. The "back" road is less windy, but a little longer, that is the best way to get into and out of Chacagua! Rose and Jeff were very gracious hosts, not in the way, but there if you need them...and Rose delivered chocolate cupcakes for our first evening's dinner, yummy! The chickens, the dogs (Ruby and her frisbee and ball! hahahaha!), the kitty Lucy...it was wonderful!
Come up to the sacred land, where you can dream and create. By relaxing your mind, body and spirit, the magic begins.
