Overview

Northern Michigan Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

White Fence is a truly unique vacation property. The property is a compilation of restored circa 1900 farm buildings just one block south of one of the most quaint villages in the Upper Midwest. The Village of Suttons Bay has deluxe shopping, art galleries and good restaurants abound. White Fence is within walking distance of it all and centrally located for touring all of scenic Leelanau County and its multitude of wineries, fine restaurants, charming villages and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore Park.

White Fence is a small and quiet property which has been meticulously renovated. The guest suite is artfully done with privacy, quiet and magnificent views of the bay kept in mind. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with seating areas throughout including private decks on the beach. Night star gazing is memorable.

You will find specialty food items and beverages in your refrigerator when you arrive. But directly across the street from White Fence is a gourmet grocery store which specializes in local produce and houses an extensive wine selection where the sommelier can describe to you the award-winning local wines. There is an outdoor kitchen area at White Fence with a charcoal grill should you decide to cook and hot plate for sautéing and boiling.

Also directly across the street, is the Leelanau Trail, an extensive biking, walking and running trail. It offers miles of scenic enjoyment. In the winter months, the Trail is groomed for cross country skiing.

White Fence was opened for business on July 4th, 2010 and has been pleasing guests ever since.

About Kathy

We stumbled onto Northern Michigan in the mid-1970's and fell in love with the crystal-clear waters of the upper Great Lakes. The Caribbean-like colors range from deep navy blue to teal green and you can see the beautiful sand bottoms at 40 foot depths. We were hooked and vacationed here every year, then moved here full-time in 2002 when we bought White Fence. My architect husband spotted this property over 20 years ago and knew it had untapped potential. I am a photographer and will never run out of beautiful things to photograph in this area. It's a special place.

Kathy purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Kathy chose Northern Michigan

Leelanau County has so many beautiful vistas ranging from rural cherry orchards to vineyards to islands to seashores to cool villages we sometimes wonder why everyone doesn't live here. It is scenic in all four seasons. Springs brings the cherry blossoms, summer the cool clear air and joy of the water, fall a color array the would put Vermont to shame and winter is simply a wonderland. On top of that, the restaurants are spectacular.

What makes this cottage unique

We pay unique attention to the small details that will make your stay special. The linens are cool to the touch. The tasty treats are unique. And the views can not be beat.

Dreamy Views and an Architectural Delight

  • 5 of 5

I lived in NYC for decades and my French husband has traveled the world...so... for better or for worse, we are two pretty picky people when it comes to traveling. After staying here four nights, I can safely say, the Carriage House at White Fence gets two big thumbs up from both of us. The view of Traverse Bay out the living room window is nothing short of spectacular. Oh, the pink dawns...no two the same...the changing light and colors are such good medicine for the soul. My husband is a swimmer and he loved taking a dip out front of the house in the crystal clear water. I read novels under the glorious shade trees---there are a few outdoor seating areas here to choose from. Inside the carriage house is a beautifully designed home. The owner is an architect---and obviously a good one. An abundance of light, views galore from the kitchen bar area, and the high bedroom ceiling is composed of stunning open beams. The chic decor is a mix of chocolate browns, white trim and lively splashes of red. There are also gallery quality framed photographs on the walls, taken by the owner. Wine, cheese, salad and other goodies were left for us as a surprise welcome and Kathy, the owner, went out of her way to provide detailed information on local restaurants and activities. She's a jewel and ditto for White Fence---a true gem. We'll be back and thanks!

A Wonderful Experience!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Carriage House for six nights and can't say enough about the entire experience. Kathy and Duke were wonderful hosts... extremely hospitable, helpful and nice. We were made to feel welcome immediately and Kathy had several recommendations about things to see and do, as well as restaurants we might enjoy.

White Fence is a stunning property and The Carriage House is lovely in every way. The decor is stylish and contemporary but still has a warm atmosphere. The artwork in the suite is excellent including several photos taken by Kathy from around the Peninsula. Upon arrival there were several delicious food items and a bottle of wine to get us off to a great start which was a thoughtful and generous gesture on Kathy and Duke's part. One of the things we liked is how private the suite is in addition to being a wonderful place to stay.

A few steps out the door is Lake Michigan and it was a beautiful sight from the Carriage House. The water is aqua blue and so clear you can see the bottom. Kathy recommended a place to rent kayaks and for two days we kept it on the bank there, using it at all times of the day. There is also a wonderful Hiking/Bike trail within a block away. Sutton's bay is a charming town and we highly recommend it as a base if you are exploring the area.

We love to travel and don't always go back to the same place twice, but all week long we talked about how fun it would be to return to the Carriage House. We HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is looking for understated elegance, sophisticated style and comfort. Thank you Kathy and Duke!

The BEST -- cannot do better for a couple

  • 5 of 5

2015 was our 6th summer vacation at the White Fence on M-22 in/on Suttons Bay. We love this place. The Carriage House suite is beautifully renovated and comfortable for a couple who want a private waterfront vacation. The owners, Duke & Kathy, are super hosts and thought of every little things to make the unit complete and convenient. We especially like the decor, the large rooms, the convenient kitchenette, the front patio area and the waterfront deck. Suttons Bay is one of the nicest towns in Michigan and on the Leelannau Peninsula. Convertible driving around M-22 and the interior roads gives us new surprises every year. The rolling landsape covered with cherry trees and vineyards beckons you to stop at any one or so of the local wineries, some of which include beautiful views, award-winning wines, and weekend evening entertainment. The addition of micro-breweries has been a new adventure in the past few years. And, if that isn't enough, Traverse City with its water sports, hotels, and entertainment venues and the idyllic Old Mission Peninsula are a short ride away. There is never want for something to do OR the opportunity to do absolutely nothing in the privacy provided at the White Fence.

Everything and more!

  • 5 of 5

Three friends and myself stayed at White Fence for a week. Both suites are beautiful, comfortable and very thoughtfully put together. This is a stunning lake front property that is in an ideal location. A short easy walk will get you into the town of Suttons Bay. Grocery and paved bike trail across the road. Whether you know Suttons Bay or this is your first visit, you will fall in love with White Fence.

Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

We were searching for a place to relax and unwind for a few days before our week long vacation in Traverse City and found this little slice of Heaven. Kathy and Duke have thought of everything to make your experience unforgettable. We stayed in the Cottage Suite and it was better than any luxury hotel we have ever visited. The private beach was perfect and the grounds are even more beautiful than the pictures. We walked to downtown Suttons Bay for dinner and a movie and of course shopping. We look forward to returning. Treat yourself and check it out!

Perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

Searching for a nice place to relax for a few days before meeting our family on Mackinac Island, this listing popped up on VRBO and looked like the perfect spot. Which it was! Kathy was out of town, but Duke met us and gave us the familiarization tour to start our stay. And our stay in the Cottage Suite was perfect in every way. The goodies in the fridge were generous, making a trip to the grocery unnecessary until the next day. The attention to detail throughout the suite was flawless: lighting, artwork, soothing color selection, comfy bed, and thoughtful area information book, all made for a memorable three days in Suttons Bay.
