I have been retired for a number of years and wanted a place in the Big Bend since 1971 when I first visited at the age of 18. We purchased the property our home now sets on in 1981 and put up the house in 2007. We spend our time between our main home in Katy, TX, our sons home in San Marcos and out here. I love it out here in the Texas Outback. So peaceful, so calm.
Janet Eby purchased this house in 2007
This home site was selected from hundreds of acres and several other possible home sites to take advantage of the marvelous views, abundant wildlife, beautiful desert plants, easy road access, and privacy.
This house provides a perfect escape from the stresses of modern life, but is close enough to the highway and Terlingua to avoid being cut off from society.
We had a great 4 night stay at the rancho - 2 families of friends, total 4 adults and 4 kids ages 11-6 and loved it!
It is conviniently located to go to the Big Bend (about 1 hour to any corner of the park), easy to explore Terlingua and more - making it a great base for exploring the area.
The house has everything you need and more - we cooked all our meals at home (breakfasts and dinners) - there was more than enough of everything - plates, mugs, silverware, pots, pans etc. We were happy to use the grill for bbq.
In addition there are so much small extras: walking sticks, flash lights, books about the area, night sky guide, porch with table , chairs, rocking chair... So much fun!!!! We spent the evenings at the porch stargazing and even saw some "falling stars". Hope that are wish to come back will come true!
We never actually planned to come here but heavy rain at the beginning of our stay meant we could not access the LTM house and we were offered this as a replacement house. whilst not as aesthetically beautiful the house became an excellent base for exploring big bend national park.We enjoyed breakfast and sunrise on the veranda enjoying making waffles with the machine provided, we also enjoyed a sunset BBQ. The birds, deer and jack rabbits provided plenty of entertainment and we had the bonus of enjoying some of team GB success at the Olympics as we had the TV. this was a very comfortable and enjoyable place to stay and although we left to try out the LTM ranch when the weather improved we could easily have remained here. in a way we ended up with the perfect mix of the two houses. a wonderful stay in Terlingua and many thanks to Janet & family for advising us to adapt our plans and checking that we were having a great stay at both properties.
This rental was wonderful. It is fully stocked with all that is described and then some. We came for Big Bend NP and Mula Oso was a perfect base to explore from as it is located only a few minutes from the western gate to the park. I saw numerous new birds I had not seen before right on the property. My family and I also saw a rattlesnake, deer, quail, jackrabbits and we heard javelinas all from the front and back porches of the house. We sat on the front porch at night and saw the stars as you do not see them in populated places because there is little light pollution in the area, quite a show. The owners provided clear, comprehensive directions to and instructions for the home prior to our arrival. Big Bend is really a jewel in our National Park system and Mula Oso was perfect for our visit. We highly recommend La Kiva restaurant out near the ghost town as well.
Awesome property! Very well equipped/stocked with all of the essentials. It was better than I had expected in every way (i.e. better than a lot of other vacation rentals that I have rented over the years.) Couldn't be happier with our experience.
We really enjoyed our stay. Wish there was a pool closer, and would have love to see some wildlife. I don't think a mouse counts, although we did see a rattlesnake. Would go back for sure. Lajitas golf course is beautiful.
Rancho Mula Oso has everything! Location, great outdoor sitting areas, well stocked kitchen....the list is endless. We enjoyed the gas grill and being able to cook meals as eating out in the area is limited. The house is very comfortable with all you need for a short or long stay.
As stated the location is great as the house is 15 minutes from Big Bend park and 10 minutes from Terlingua.
The owners make is easy as they email you directions and instructions before your arrival.
We were totally pleased and would definitely stay here again and definitely recommend it.
Near Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park, historic Fort Leaton, Rio Grande River, Terlingua, and Lajitas. Great home base for hiking, canoeing, rafting, horseback riding, birding, taking scenic drives, or just relaxing.
