About Janet Eby

I have been retired for a number of years and wanted a place in the Big Bend since 1971 when I first visited at the age of 18. We purchased the property our home now sets on in 1981 and put up the house in 2007. We spend our time between our main home in Katy, TX, our sons home in San Marcos and out here. I love it out here in the Texas Outback. So peaceful, so calm.

Janet Eby purchased this house in 2007

Why Janet Eby chose Texas

This home site was selected from hundreds of acres and several other possible home sites to take advantage of the marvelous views, abundant wildlife, beautiful desert plants, easy road access, and privacy.

What makes this house unique

This house provides a perfect escape from the stresses of modern life, but is close enough to the highway and Terlingua to avoid being cut off from society.

STAR STUDDED NIGHT SKIES, PICTURESQUE VIEWS, EASY ACCESS TO BBNP

  • 5 of 5

My husband, dog and I were fortunate enough to spend 13 days in this wonderful home. We were attracted to its location near Big Bend NP, but came to appreciate the beautiful desert yard, abundant wildlife, sparkling star studded skies, and beautiful views on all horizons. The 6 comfortable outdoor seating areas, allow you to enjoy different views, while chasing the sun or shade. Be sure to watch day break, while enjoying your preferred breakfast beverage on the front or back porch. Sitting by the fire pit, watching the flames dance, until they collapse into warming embers, is a relaxing end to daylight and a great way to experience the emerging night sounds. We saw cotton tailed rabbits, jackrabbits, hawks, ravens, black throated sparrows, thrashers, cardinals, deer, 3 kinds of doves, house finches, & lizards. A coyote visited during the day, interested in our 18 pound dog, and often under darkened night skies, a coyote chorus could be heard from afar.

Thank you B family for sharing your lovely home. We enjoyed your collections, the ample reading material, the satellite TV, internet, the well-stocked kitchen, walk in master bedroom closet, huge master bath, comfortable bed and Big Bend welcome materials.

Managers: Janet and Darrell, made the reservation process painless & take great pride in providing many items needed for your stay: sugar, spices, teas, coffee, condiments, water, toilet paper, paper towels, sponges, soaps, shampoos, kitchen soaps, trash bags, towel & face cloths. In case we had arrived without adequate food, there were frozen vegetables and boxed & canned goods. I especially enjoyed indulging in a freeze pop!

One day when we were concerned about someone having opened the driveway gate lock, Janet quickly & politely answered our call, and Darrell arrived shortly after to change the padlock code. Nice people who clearly care about their work-making guests comfortable!

Fantastic for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers

  • 4 of 5

It's all about the outdoors! My small group came to explore Big Bend National Park and I am so happy we chose Rancho Mula Oso. It's in a great, private location about 10 minutes from the park and five minutes from town. We had everything we needed including a well stocked kitchen, two lovely sitting decks, plenty of hot water for five people, a grill and fire pit. The home is very comfortable and casual. After seeing other motel options in town, I would definitely stay here again. The property managers are very accommodating and knowledgeable about the area. Thank you for making our stay in Terlingua quite memorable.

Great launching pad for Big Bend.

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights in February here with our four children (ages 3-9) and our au pair. The house had increadible views all around and we loved watching the sunrise, sunset, and moonrise from the decks. Being only minutes from the park entrance was very convenient, Big Bend is large so there is a lot of driving within the park, thus it was nice to minimize the time getting there. We used the fire pit one evening for the kids to roast hotdogs and marshmallows; they had a great time. We saw rabbits around the house several times, my four year old ran inside at one point yelling "I just saw the Easter bunny!!!!" Overall it was a lovely stay, and it was nice to have a homey space in a landscape so foreign to these Mainers!

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great 4 night stay at the rancho - 2 families of friends, total 4 adults and 4 kids ages 11-6 and loved it!

It is conviniently located to go to the Big Bend (about 1 hour to any corner of the park), easy to explore Terlingua and more - making it a great base for exploring the area.

The house has everything you need and more - we cooked all our meals at home (breakfasts and dinners) - there was more than enough of everything - plates, mugs, silverware, pots, pans etc. We were happy to use the grill for bbq.

In addition there are so much small extras: walking sticks, flash lights, books about the area, night sky guide, porch with table , chairs, rocking chair... So much fun!!!! We spent the evenings at the porch stargazing and even saw some "falling stars". Hope that are wish to come back will come true!

Great unexpected stay

  • 4 of 5

We never actually planned to come here but heavy rain at the beginning of our stay meant we could not access the LTM house and we were offered this as a replacement house. whilst not as aesthetically beautiful the house became an excellent base for exploring big bend national park.We enjoyed breakfast and sunrise on the veranda enjoying making waffles with the machine provided, we also enjoyed a sunset BBQ. The birds, deer and jack rabbits provided plenty of entertainment and we had the bonus of enjoying some of team GB success at the Olympics as we had the TV. this was a very comfortable and enjoyable place to stay and although we left to try out the LTM ranch when the weather improved we could easily have remained here. in a way we ended up with the perfect mix of the two houses. a wonderful stay in Terlingua and many thanks to Janet & family for advising us to adapt our plans and checking that we were having a great stay at both properties.
