About Janet Eby

I have been retired for a number of years and wanted a place in the Big Bend since 1971 when I first visited at the age of 18. We purchased the property our home now sets on in 1981 and put up the house in 2007. We spend our time between our main home in Katy, TX, our sons home in San Marcos and out here. I love it out here in the Texas Outback. So peaceful, so calm.

Janet Eby purchased this house in 2007

Why Janet Eby chose Terlingua

This home site was selected from hundreds of acres and several other possible home sites to take advantage of the marvelous views, abundant wildlife, beautiful desert plants, easy road access, and privacy.

What makes this house unique

This house provides a perfect escape from the stresses of modern life, but is close enough to the highway and Terlingua to avoid being cut off from society.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

House is in a great location, well stocked with basic supplies. Everything was as described and worked well. And scenery is outstanding. Beautiful sunsets, gorgeous desert flowers and serene, quiet area.

Perfect desert homeaway

  • 5 of 5

Rancho Oso Mula is a great place to stay when you’re visiting Big Bend and the surrounding area. The house is very well equipped—the kitchen has just about everything you could need. The living area— including two porches to watch the spectacular sunsets is great. My only complaint is that there needs to be more lighting. Hard to read if you’re not next to the lamp. The area around is amazing. We had jackrabbits and bunnies, all kinds of birds and coyote calls at night. We’d stay there again.

Very comfortable and everything we needed.

  • 5 of 5

This place was great for 4 dudes riding bikes in Big Bend. We used the Bar B Que Grill, the laundry dryer, and everything in between. Pleasantly surprised to find more food stuff- spices, etc. - than we expected. Cooking at the house was very pleasant. Just know that the house is about 15 minutes from Terlingua proper.

Loved the Quiet Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for one week as our base for visiting Big Bend National Park. It is an older home for sure but is kept very nice and clean – and I am picky about that. The interior is very spacious, comfy, and nicely decorated. My hubby so enjoyed looking at all the rock specimens and artifacts that are out on display. The beds are really comfy and there are plenty of extra linens and towels. Things that are provided: lots of spices, coffee, tea (Lipton's), paper towels, toilet paper, foil and plastic wrap, body-wash, shampoo and conditioner. Just be sure to bring a hair dryer, if you need one. Laundry detergent pacs were provided for 6 loads of wash. The dishwasher and washing machine are quite loud, so plan your movie watching accordingly (lots of movies provided). The air-conditioning/heater work great.

Be sure to load up on groceries in Alpine prior to coming here for best selection. Although the small Cottonwood Market in Study Butte surprisingly has a great variety of groceries (meat, frozen items including ice cream and pizzas and fresh produce and even gluten free and organic items on the shelves).

We sure enjoyed being able to come back to this secluded location after a day of hiking in Big Bend. We made all our dinners and ate outside on either the front our back deck. The view out the back is beautiful looking toward the rocky hills. We loved the QUIET! I doubt you could find a better place to stay than Rancho Mula Oso when visiting the Big Bend area.

Nicer than anything we’ve found in our price range in this area. It’s spacious and convenient.

  • 5 of 5

The mountains are all around the place, and I could do my morning walks with a constant view in sight. The rental property has everything one could want. I especially appreciated the WiFi and big screen tv, although we didn’t have much time (or care to) watch tv. The “bunkhouse” is a stationary RV at the side of the house. It’s as clean as can be, and very quiet and comfy for a friend who decided to come along for the weekend at the last minute. The water is heavy with minerals, but large bottles of drinking water were provided. It was a great weekend for my husband and myself, with one other couple and our last-minute friend.
