NOTE!: All rentals are not what they seem to be! As you look over numerous property rentals, you will no doubt see many pretty pictures. But what you do not see is their condition. We give you our assurance that this is our personal “home away from home” and that we continually maintain it as if we lived there all year long. So rest assured that 'what you see is what you get'! No unpleasant surprises!
The main living area has a 15 feet high cathedral ceiling with bamboo lattice designed to simulate a tiki hut, complete with its own bar, sofas with top grain imported Italian leather, Persian rug, 19th century accent pieces and home theater/entertainment center. The latest electronic and entertainment features add to your enjoyment, including high speed wireless internet, 4 flat screen TVs, a DirecTV satellite dish with over 200 channels, a Sony home theater system, DVD/VCR players and a vast VHS video/board games library.
Due to the special upside down design of the home, the bedroom level is lower down and the living levels are higher up, thereby affording great views from the areas where you spend the most time. There are also decks on 4 levels (2 of which are screened).
The views will remain with you forever: the rooftop patio, at a height of nearly 40 ft. above ground level, offers 360 degree views of the Gulf of Mexico, Captiva Pass and the State Land Preserve.
Included in 'The Compass Rose' house rental package is unlimited free access to all of the facilities of the North Captiva Island Club. The club has 2 swimming pools (Olympic size heated and cooled + lap size heated) and a jacuzzi. The brick paved pool area is over 14,000 square feet, with over 80 chaise lounges, plus a Spa facility with steam room, sauna, air conditioned changing rooms and lockers. For the active type, North Captiva Island Club also has two lighted Har-Tru tennis courts, a fitness room, basketball court, and sand volleyball court.
You can then relax with your favorite cocktail at Hidden Cove Pool Bar, where a pool side lunch is also available. Kayaks, bicycles, paddle boats and fishing gear rentals are all available at no charge at North Captiva Island Club.
For those guests who like to explore the island, there are 20 miles of bike paths, exclusive of the State Preserve areas. There are also four restaurants on the island: The Boat House, Mango's Island Grill, Barnacle's, and Over The Waterfront.
The house rental also includes all linens and towels (house + beach), beach umbrellas, consumables such as toilet paper and cleaning supplies, and clean-up after departure.
North Captiva Island is the best-kept secret in Florida: only four miles long and half a mile wide, North Captiva is a Caribbean-like barrier island accessible only by a 20-minute boat ride. There are no cars and no paved roads (golf carts only on sand roads!)
We have owned and operated "The Compass Rose" since 2003. Our vast professional experience in customer service enables us to have a thorough understanding of our customers' needs and concerns and to give them a worry-free, high-quality rental experience.
Daniel and Linda Hrycyk purchased this house in 2003
Our family first started renting properties on North Captiva Island in 1999. We immediately fell in love with the island and, after 4 years of renting, decided to build our very own house in this piece of paradise!
"The Compass Rose" is the ultimate family vacation getaway with something for everyone! We are conveniently located only 50 yards from the Gulf of Mexico beach and have numerous amenities including a private heated swimming pool with adjacent BBQ/dining area and vast ground floor sheltered lounge/games area including a ping-pong table, a foosball table and a corn hole (sandbag) game. We also have high speed wireless internet, 4 flat screen TV's with over 200 DirecTV channels, various board games and a selection of books.
We stayed here for the first week of March and used it as a recovery from the awful midwest winter. Our first visit to the island and it is a great place to get away and relax. The house is very nice, very clean and well maintained. There are lots of nice touches - cable, direct tv, nespresso machine, etc. It's location is great since it is near the reserve and a very private part of the beach. The water views are outstanding from a lot of areas of the house and the screened porch is great for sitting outside in the breeze. I would recommend Compass Rose highly.
This year for Christmas I booked the Compass Rose and our family had an eight day holiday on North Captiva. The experience was amazing. While the logistics of getting to the island must be very well pre-planned, it went flawlessly. The Pine Island taxi met us at the Fort Myers Airport and we went to Publix to get our prearranged food order. I listened to the other reviewers and really bought enough food and beverages for the 6 of us for 8 days. We loaded everything onto the Island Girl Charters water taxi and witnessed our first sunset of the vacation in the water taxi. Jenny and Travis met us at the dock and got us settled into the house. Jenny and Travis are a dream to work with, as were the Island Girl Charters and the Pine Island Taxi. The preplanning these people do to ensure your vacation is smooth is something you really don't experience much anymore. We had a couple of questions throughout our stay and Jenny always returned my text within an hour. She even asked me if I needed anything on the mainland because she was planning a trip the next day. The Compass Rose is a beautiful property, styled to ensure a comfortable laid back vacation. The kitchen has everything that you need to cook with, to include spices. The bedrooms are well appointed with comfortable beds and 2 adjoining baths. WiFi is good and there areTVs, books, videos and hundreds of TV channels (which we rarely used). The beach is literally right in front of you, uncrowded and thoroughly enjoyed. The golf carts got us around the island with no problem. There is no grocery store on the island, so really plan your meals. The restaurants are pricey, you need reservations at a couple and frankly the food was just OK. That would not deter me from going back to the island. Many people have asked me if I would do it again and my answer is definitely yes. This is not a location for folks who need to be 'on the go' at all times. It is a location that is remote (and still in the US!), quiet and meant for people who relish some "down time" from their too busy lives.
We stayed on North Captiva years ago and our entire family had such an amazing experience that our best friends needed to see it for themselves. We picked this house because of the size and proximity to the beach. However, there are many options similar to this house. What helped us make a "hands down" decision was the owners' attentiveness during our search process. We felt as though we were taken "under their wing" and guided through a VIP type of experience (which was similar to our first experience.) The house, the owner, and the island lived up to our expectations. The house is beautiful, has amazing views of the sunrises and sunsets, is steps from the beach, and had everything we needed for the perfect vacation. Our family and our friends were again blown away by the nature, serenity, and adventure this house and island provide. We would rent this house and from this owner again, without a doubt.
The only bad thing about Compass Rose was having to leave it. Vacationing on North Captiva Island was the most relaxing vacation we've ever had. There is a laid-back feeling as soon as you board the ferry over to the island. There are no traffic lights, no cars, no crowds, and the locals were very friendly.
The owner, Dan, was extremely helpful and quick to respond to any questions we had. In the weeks leading up to our vacation, he sent several emails with detailed information about Compass Rose and North Captiva Island so we knew exactly what to expect before arriving.
Compass Rose was a beautiful place to stay. Views from the main level were magazine-picture-quality and more. We could see ocean everywhere! We enjoyed sunsets from the crow's nest almost every evening.
Compass Rose was also very well-stocked. Provided for us were paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, soap, body wash, and cleaning supplies which was great not to have to worry about on vacation. The kitchen had everything we needed including a nice selection of spices, plenty of great quality cookware, and a really nice blender. The beds and linens were very comfortable, and extra sheets and blankets were available in the downstairs closet. There was an inside dining table and an outside one on a screened porch (we ate outside for every meal). Televisions in every bedroom and in the living room all worked great. Also provided were lots of music CDs, movies, games, books and magazines. My kids wished the internet was a little faster, but it worked fine for online gaming (we just couldn't stream a video and a game at the same time). Considering we were on an island, it really was fine. You don't go to an island on vacation to be online all the time anyway! :)
Wildlife around Compass Rose was amazing. Every evening an Osprey brought his fish dinner up to the crow's nest to eat it. A manatee came up to us two different days while we were swimming in the Gulf. Dolphin and Tarpon were spotted numerous times jumping in the water almost daily. We saw tortoises several times when we were out driving around in the golf cart.
When you step on the beaches, it feels like stepping back in time. There are no high-rise condos to spoil the view. Driftwood washes up on-shore. Seashells are plentiful and there are so many varieties to collect. We saw at least 10 different species of birds.
We can't wait to return and highly recommend Compass Rose and North Captiva Island!
Can't say enough good about this home! Pictures do not do it justice! All that said was furnished, was indeed furnished. The home owner was so easy to deal with and made it hassle free for us. The Manager who lived on the island also made the stay very pleasant and was immediately available with any issues or questions that we had. There was plenty of room and space for the entire family of 9! The view from the top deck was breath taking! The only thing that would need to be changed would have been the mattresses on the fold out couches....not quite enough cushion to make them comfortable to sleep. Other than that very small issue, we wouldn't have traded it for anything. As all others say on the island, bring more food than clothes! Extremely close to the beach: home had with all the necessary beach chairs, etc. The island and this amazing and beautiful home made our stay incredibly fun and relaxing too! We can't wait to return to Paradise!
We loved our stay at the Compass Rose. The house is amazing! We were all so excited once we arrived because it was exactly what we were expecting but better! The views of the beach and water from the decks are breathtaking. We loved watching the dolphins play while drinking our morning coffee from the top deck! The kitchen is stocked with every pan and dish that you might need. There is a gas grill and a charcoal grill. The bed linens and towels provided were very luxurious. We slept so soundly in the comfortable beds. I believe there were four TV’s but we didn’t have time to turn on the TV. The internet service met our needs perfectly! Dan was very helpful with suggestions on planning our trip to North Captiva and always answered any questions very promptly. Upon arrival to the island, Sherman met us with 2 golf cars and off we went to the house! The whole atmosphere of the island is so laid back. It was a very unique experience. We loved exploring the island on the golf carts. I would not hesitate to recommend The Compass Rose! We will definitely go back!
Once again, the Compass Rose exceeded expectations – and that’s saying something because this was our second stay at the Compass Rose. The first is summarized in my June 25, 2014 review below. When we asked the kids where they wanted to go for vacation this summer, naturally they replied “Hawaii,” then “Wally World” – but once those facetious National Lampoon’s Vacation responses were out of the way, the vote was unanimous to return to N. Captiva and the Compass Rose. It was even better the second time – perhaps because of the familiarity.
This time we were a group of 7 (“kids” ages 24-34), and we had plenty of room to spread out and enjoy both collective and private space. The owners really do a top notch job of keeping this place updated, filled with amenities, and “user-friendly.” This year’s updates featured a new widescreen TV, new fridge, and a new silent running Bosch dishwasher, among other things. Great master bedroom with nicely tiled master bath and screened in porch outside the door with a hot tub. We did everything mentioned in last year’s review again this year, and enjoyed it even more the second time around. Added jet ski’s for an afternoon (again from the great folks at Boats & Fun located right next to the N. Captiva Club), as well as more nature hiking and some running to burn off the calories from overeating.
Getting to the island is part of the fun (at least as we look at it) – and using the owner’s helpful info sheet that is filled with all the right suggestions, it’s pretty easy. We flew in from STL and Denver to RSW in Ft.Meyers, where the Pine Island taxi folks picked us up in two separate groups; quick stop at the Publix to load on the pre-ordered groceries for the week; then to the marina where the Island Girl picks you up for a nice water taxi ride to Barnacles on N. Cap. The owner has a great assistant, Sherman, who meets you at the dock and loads all your gear and groceries into a golf cart, along with a couple other golf carts the owner has waiting for you and the family, and you caravan for a few minutes to the house. We don’t often go to the same place twice, but the Compass Rose really is inviting and wonderful for creating memories and relaxing. We are now wishing we were back there!! Hard to believe, but it really is better than the photos.
North Captiva Island is the best-kept secret in Florida: only four miles long and half a mile wide, North Captiva is a Caribbean-like barrier island accessible only by a 20-minute boat ride. There are No Cars and No Paved Roads (transportation is only by electric golf cart on sand roads!). Nearby Captiva Island and Sanibel Island were once just like North Captiva until bridges brought traffic and hordes of tourists to their shores.
One word describes North Captiva Island best: Nature! On our pristine white beaches, you will find all kinds of rare and exotic Seashells. We also offer world-class Sport-fishing for tarpon, snook and redfish. A large part of the island is a 700-acre State Land Preserve for the protection of endangered wildlife: migratory and nesting birds include osprey, herons, egrets and pelicans. Manatees and dolphins are regular sights from our shores!
Other Activities: shelling, nature walks
Golf: Alden Pines Country Club is a Bermuda grass semi-private course located on nearby Pine Island. It is easily accessible from Pineland Marina (take Island Girl Charters ferry service from North Captiva Island). Water comes into play on many holes and narrow fairways make for a challenging game.
Fort-Myers RSW Airport, a private optional shuttle service is available to bring you grocery shopping and to deliver you to the water taxi. Once on the island, you will be greeted and brought to the house. Porters will assist you with luggage and groceries.
