Like most log cabins, River Woods was a realization of childhood dreams. After all, who hasn't at one time in their life wanted to live in a log cabin?
The dream, long slumbering underneath years of stress and "priorities", came alive in October 2004 when we first drove across the Shenandoah River to view the hardwood and pine-covered 5.88 acres that is now home to River Woods. Driving up to the property was like in the 1988 movie Funny Farm, starring Chevy Chase - deer, turkeys, and pileated woodpeckers appearing as if cued by some hidden director. Fall leaves were in full display of color, and no noise could be heard except for the rustling of drying leaves driven by cool gentle breezes. However, this was no choreographed production, only nature greeting its soon-to-be new neighbors. That day, that moment, began a four-year journey of planning, designing and building - making a dream come true.
In Nature, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "In the woods, we return to reason and faith." And that has become the mission of River Woods - to help people find the quietness in which to reflect on the things that matter most in life.
Since its completion in the summer of 2008, River Woods has become a place to relax and reflect upon God's wonderful creation. It has served as a romantic getaway for many couples as well as the base camp for adventure vacations of hiking, canoeing and tubing, mountain biking, horseback riding and marathon running. It has become a second home for families who need an escape from the rat race of our nation's capital.
It has served as a place for rest and recuperation for war-weary service members visiting their families while on leave from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. And it has been a place of solace for families grieving the loss of a loved one.
Music groups and writers have used River Woods and the beautiful natural surroundings as a place of inspiration for their songs, prose and poetry.
River Woods has served to reunite geopraphically-dispersed high school and college friends and as a place of celebration for engagements, weddings and birthdays.
As owners of River Woods, we have greatly enjoyed knowing that our second home has brought joy to so many and look forward to hearing from future guests on what River Woods has meant to them.
We're home again, after a great few days. You really have created something very special out there. Everything was clean and in perfect order. Thanks again. All the arrangements worked great, and a few peaceful days in the woods were just what I needed.
Loved it. The place had everything we needed and the process was so easy. The house was amazing, well kept, beautiful, and priced right.
Wow, what a beautiful and pristine property!!! My friends and I absolutely love the location as it's a bit secluded...very quiet. The firepist was most enjoyable. We had an absolutely amazing experience and will certainly return.
We booked this house for a Valentine's getaway and were not disappointed. The property was well maintained and spotless, with nice touches throughout.
The kitchen was fully appointed, with everything we could reasonably expect for cooking nice meals while there. We were pleasantly surprised to learn upon arrival that the master bedroom's fireplace is 2-sided and also serves the master bath near the jacuzzi tub. We would not hesitate to book the property again.
Great getaway in a beautiful setting. The home was very clean with all the necessary items to cook and relax. This property is off the beaten path which adds to its charm. Only struggle was with the Internet connection but this was a small sacrifice for a great stay. We recommend this stay for couples wanting to get away.
We really enjoyed staying at River Woods over Inauguration Weekend! The stillness was the perfect antidote to all the craziness in Washington. As a group of two couples each with a three-year old child, we found the house to be perfect for our needs. We appreciated how well-maintained the house and its furnishings were, as well as the kindness and responsiveness of the hosts. We walked down to the river, made S'mores in the backyard at the camp fire, and visited Skyline Caverns on our way out of town. If you'll be coming with small children, it's worth bringing a toddler cot since the beds are high. A tip: this house probably isn't appropriate for people with 1-2 year olds who are new to walking because of the stairs. There are toys and books at the house, which was a nice touch. The description said that the fireplace in the great room is wood-burning, but it is now gas. My only quibble is that there were no blinds on the master bedroom window...but with a three-year old, I wasn't sleeping late anyway!
This is a truly exceptional property. it is a wonderfully well equipped home in a lovely, private wooded setting. We highly recommend this as a great, luxurious place to "get away."
