Like most log cabins, River Woods was a realization of childhood dreams. After all, who hasn't at one time in their life wanted to live in a log cabin?
The dream, long slumbering underneath years of stress and "priorities", came alive in October 2004 when we first drove across the Shenandoah River to view the hardwood and pine-covered 5.88 acres that is now home to River Woods. Driving up to the property was like in the 1988 movie Funny Farm, starring Chevy Chase - deer, turkeys, and pileated woodpeckers appearing as if cued by some hidden director. Fall leaves were in full display of color, and no noise could be heard except for the rustling of drying leaves driven by cool gentle breezes. However, this was no choreographed production, only nature greeting its soon-to-be new neighbors. That day, that moment, began a four-year journey of planning, designing and building - making a dream come true.
In Nature, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "In the woods, we return to reason and faith." And that has become the mission of River Woods - to help people find the quietness in which to reflect on the things that matter most in life.
Since its completion in the summer of 2008, River Woods has become a place to relax and reflect upon God's wonderful creation. It has served as a romantic getaway for many couples as well as the base camp for adventure vacations of hiking, canoeing and tubing, mountain biking, horseback riding and marathon running. It has become a second home for families who need an escape from the rat race of our nation's capital.
It has served as a place for rest and recuperation for war-weary service members visiting their families while on leave from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. And it has been a place of solace for families grieving the loss of a loved one.
Music groups and writers have used River Woods and the beautiful natural surroundings as a place of inspiration for their songs, prose and poetry.
River Woods has served to reunite geopraphically-dispersed high school and college friends and as a place of celebration for engagements, weddings and birthdays.
As owners of River Woods, we have greatly enjoyed knowing that our second home has brought joy to so many and look forward to hearing from future guests on what River Woods has meant to them.
We're home again, after a great few days. You really have created something very special out there. Everything was clean and in perfect order. Thanks again. All the arrangements worked great, and a few peaceful days in the woods were just what I needed.
Wonderful cabin home. We spent a week exploring Shenandoah National Park. We liked the location as it allowed us to visit the northern and middle entrance areas of the park. Front Royal was a nice town to have nearby as well. Usually we do not cook so much while on vacation but the kitchen and grill were set up so well that we were able to cook with ease. The cabin is in a very nice setting.
Our family had a wonderful time at the River Woods House and we can't wait to do it again! The house was spacious and the amenities were great. We made dinner both nights we were there and had so much fun spending time together. We also got to enjoy the outdoors and the fire pit was great for making smores and hanging out. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a nice family destination. Also, it is close to Luray and Shenandoah State Park so we got to do some sightseeing while there. Thanks again Tom and Theresa for letting us stay at your property!
Our family of 4: 2 adults + 2 teens, loved this retreat. Its a very nice cabin. We are from the west coast that this cabin was in the style of Sun Valley, ID. We went on a hike, and like the warning foretold we came across a bear. It sure made the hike exciting for us. We sang songs all the way down the mountain after that, so it added to our overall experience.
The rooms are large, beds are comfy and the master suite is really great with a fireplace wall in between the bedroom and bath.
Wish we could've stayed longer. I'd certainly recommend a stay here.
The cabin was incredible! Very clean and fully stocked, we thoroughly enjoyed staying there.
I toyed with not writing a review because frankly this place is so wonderful I want to be able to go back. The cabin is nothing short of perfect. It is tastefully decorated and not cluttered. From the moment we walked in, we felt at home. It was also immaculate. we felt far away from everything but were able to drive easily to a lovely coffee shop about 20 or so minutes again. To the owners and caretaker - thank you! Our stay was fun, relaxing, and exactly what we were looking for!
We stayed at River Woods during a transitional weather weekend in early April 2016 - a bit of sun, wind, rain, snow, warmth and cold. The "development" seemed super low-key and felt much further than 90 miles from major urbanity. It is a bit of a drive (~25 mins or so) if you're planning to use it as a base to drop into Shenandoah NP, but honestly not sure if there's anything as nice that's closer. Plus the development backs to other protected public land so you can find hikes and adventure close by. All features are as advertised - tons of fun for adults and kids alike!
