VOLCANO UPDATE: Our rental is located on the north end of the Island and the volcano is erupting on the south end. We are unaffected and the air is pure and clear. We didn't know the volcano was erupting until a friend phoned us.
The View House is the epitome of graciousness, peace, quiet, and privacy. It is a tropical oasis on three acres of manicured grounds, fragrant flowers, and tropical fruit trees. The predominant colors are the crystal-clear blue sky, countless shades of tropical green foliage, and the deep blue-green ocean. The oxygen-rich air reaches the estate untainted over 2500 miles of the Pacific. The sunlight actually sparkles in the air at times. All these elements taken together create a Garden of Eden that you will never want to leave.
From the large, sweeping lanai (deck), Maui can be seen in the distance across the Pacific. The View House is a lovingly renovated and updated sugar plantation house, retaining the feel of a bygone era. Superbly crafted and furnished with tropical bamboo and teak furniture, it offers an elegant and light-filled space.
All water running into the house comes from deep Island aquifers and is double-filtered and pure. Floors are hardwood and tile. The house features a lovely bathroom with a soaking tub, a large, fully-equipped kitchen with Mexican counter tops, a master bedroom with a queen bed and ocean view, a small bedroom with twin beds and garden view, and a fold-out queen bed in the living room.
For even deeper relaxation, guests at the View House have exclusive use of our spa. Our infrared sauna, hot tub, and cold tub sit on totally private decks, surrounded by lime and moringa trees. Guests will find an additional shower room and water closet in the adjoining tiled breezeway.
The View House is our only rental. We are a small, private operation and offer a serene, safe, exceptionally clean environment in “old Hawaii,” off the beaten track. We are 4 miles from spectacular Waipio Valley and 4 miles from a historic small “sugar town” with all amenities. We are an hour from Kona and an hour from Hilo, making both sides of the Island accessible. The most common feedback we get is that the home and property are more beautiful than the photos.
If you are coming to the Big Island in search of beauty, peace, serenity, relaxation, and rejuvenation, you have found what you are looking for! Our part of the island still expresses traditional Hawaiian “Aloha,” and the View House is the culmination of your quest.

About Marcel Hernandez
My wife, Connie, and I are both Naturopathic Physicians and maintain a small, part-time office on the property. We see patients and tend the organic orchards and gardens. Our dear friends, Marcus and Shigeko Bachino, work with us in providing unobtrusive support, when needed. It is a blessing to live in this special place and be so closely in touch with the land. We welcome all visitors with warm aloha and invite them to partake in the healing, restorative energies that are so tangible everywhere on the property.
Marcel Hernandez purchased this House in 1999
Why Marcel Hernandez chose Honokaa
We looked for land to purchase in Hawaii for more than 10 years before we found this little piece of paradise. When we bought it, it had two aging plantation houses in need of extreme TLC. Our close friends thought we were nuts. Many years later, even Hawaii-born visitors marvel at the beauty and magic that are so tangible everywhere on the property. Special places with benches invite visitors to stop and breathe in the beauty. Fruit tree loaded with their bounty are perfect for grazing.
What makes this House unique
Imagine that you wake up in the morning to the songs of tropical birds. The sunrise is filtering through the palms, jacaranda and orchid trees, creating shadow patterns on the walls of your bedroom. The soft, gentle rain that fell through part of the night created a soothing cadence on the metal roof of your lovely quarters. You have slept well. Sliding open the large glass door, you step from your bedroom out onto the lanai, take a deep breath of pure ocean air, do a few stretches and gaze out over the deep blues of the Pacific Ocean. The trade winds are light. It is a sparkling clear day. Across the channel, Maui is shrouded in a slight mist. Donning a sarong, you walk down the lanai steps into the orchard to collect your fruit salad. A couple of ripe papayas, a passion fruit or two and a starfruit tumble into your harvest basket. A hand of tasty apple bananas awaits you on the kitchen counter. A huge, round butter avocado and a couple of Tahitian limes complete your breakfast. What to do after breakfast? Should you pack a picnic lunch and hike 40 minutes through the miles of preserve bordering the estate to the spectacular coastal views from the cliffs overlooking the ocean? Perhaps a beach trip to the legendary Waipio Valley, just four miles away? Or a 5-minute trip into town to browse the galleries and have a cup of tea? There are so many things to see and do on the island, like visiting the volcano, driving up to the Mauna Kea observatories, exploring the lush drive to Hilo. Maybe you'll just lie in the hammock for a while and think about it. Or lounge in the spa. After all, it is a gorgeous day, and you are here to relax and rejuvenate.

Beautiful relaxing vacation retreat
I feel blessed to have spent 2 wonderful weeks at this beautiful property.
The 2-bedroom house is clean and tastefully furnished. The stunning views from the dining room, living room and master bedroom overlook the bountiful orchard and the Pacific Ocean beyond. The full kitchen has everything needed to prepare meals at home. The additional amenities of the private hot tub (with a view of the orchard & ocean) and the private infrared sauna are extremely relaxing and healing. I enjoyed falling asleep at night in the master bedroom featuring a view of the canopy of sparkling stars in the clear night sky, and then awaking in the morning to a view of the orchard and the sea and sometimes a rainbow.
The property, which is located about half-way between the town of Honokaa and Waipio Valley, is so tranquil that I found myself often preferring to spend my time just relaxing on the property rather than driving off to "sight-see". My days were happily filled enjoying strolls in the orchard, where I picked the delicious fresh fruit (oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, kumquats, avocados, lemons, limes, etc.) for my lunch, and then luxuriating in the hot tub and sauna before dinner. When I did venture out & about to explore, returning "home" was always the perfect way to end the day.
I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely owners, who are exceptionally thoughtful hosts. The caretakers are gracious and kind, and I am so glad that I got to meet them both.
I loved my 2-week stay at this beautiful property, and I would highly recommend it to everyone seeking a relaxing vacation or retreat.
It is always special for us when our guests bring joyful, positive, loving and insightful energy. We are conscious of trying to offer a transcendent experience and when our guests tune in to our intention, we are thrilled.
Nice with unique touches beautiful veiw
Serene, relaxing, timeless
I chose the Peace Garden View House because I was drawn to the Old Hawaii ambiance with lots of Aloha. I chose well. The house felt welcoming upon arrival with a note pinned to the gate and all looking as described. I felt at home instantly. As advised, I stopped on the way to purchase some food and I found all that was needed in the kitchen. The entire house was sparkling clean and well organized with nice touches like beautiful fresh flowers.
As I was there for 7 nights for rest and relaxation, I welcomed the quiet along with the wonderful sounds of the night creatures. For the first few days, I did little driving and preferred enjoying the property, house, hot tub and sauna, without needing to go anywhere. A treat to myself was scheduling several Lomi Lomi massages at the house from an excellent referral, Julie S., from Marcel. I experienced all my communication with Marcel to be amazingly prompt while answering all my questions. I followed his tip to purchase Hawaii: The Big Island Revealed which I referred to a lot. I treated myself to a very special dinner and can highly recommend Merriman's, a farm to table restaurant in a nearby town, Waimea. Make reservations if you go.
I arrived on May 10th to the earthquakes and volcanic activity; however discovered it was quite a distance from Kapulena. All were advised to stay away as this was not a time for looking but a time to pray for the safety of the residents. There are plenty of places to discover, including the breathtaking lookout at nearby Waimea Valley. For the more adventuresome, you can hike down to the valley.
Weatherwise, it rained every day, and the last 5 days it rained VERY heavily all day long. One day I stayed in, enjoying the time to read, while listening to the rain. I learned that the weather patterns are changing, like everywhere, and this side of the island is getting more rain than usual. Minor disappointments were limited sunny hours at the house and no star filled nights in the hot tub. I discovered that the Kona side would be sunny. So a few days I drove over to the sun to Hapuna Beach, which is gorgeous. Last night I went back for the sunset.
One of my greatest pleasures was getting to know the caretakers, Shigeko and Marcus, who live on the property. They were available if I needed them, otherwise they were respectful of my privacy. I loved my conversations with Shigeko which added a personal touch to my stay.
Amazing in all ways that one normally only dream about, let all your aloha dreams be filled!
Arrived to an amazing basket of fresh fruit, which we ate every bite. Home was so peaceful and felt like we were all it the arms of some mystic Hawaiian dream. The home inside and out was far more than any of us expected or dreamed of, just so welcoming. My Brother lives on the other side of Historic Honokaa Town, and of course he spent lots of time with us, he felt the sprit of all the efforts that make the place so perfect. Ok, not to mention the kitchen was complete, every thing ever needed to do any level of cooking. Towels, and all things needed to enjoy the spa area, nice to lay back and watch the falling stars. I soaked long enough to see four falling stars, took 35 minutes and made a wish on each, yup wishing for another trip soon to the land of Aloha. The place was great and we were blessed to have chosen the perfect place to end our trip. Just to mention one in our party had never been to Hawaii, she saw a lot did a lot but said she would like to have spent it all here, True Aloha were her exact words.
Ok just a bit about the grounds, birds, birds, frogs, geckoes, ok and some wild big Turkeys, sitting on a nest of eggs, something you do not get to see everyday. Walking among the fruit trees, Macadamia Nut trees, sitting on the bench in the picture. There is a total respect of a sustainable life style that is gently echoed through out the property, home. There are lots of choices one makes when planning trips, you will not regret this choice. Look at the rest then select what I think is the best! ALOHA Robert Guy Albuquerque New Mexico.
I did mention the Historic Honokaa Town, a very small inviting town with lot to give, history around every corner, Aloha on every corner, so go and walk down the streets, eat at Grandmas, have a beer and pizza at Last Chance Saloon, 18" pizza is the bomb, nice Italian food place is also a #10 and worthy of you time. Just saying get out and away from the everyday and see the real Hawaii.
Very Nice place
Beautiful spot looking over the ocean. The house was very nice and the overall grounds were very peaceful. Plenty of room to spread out.
Really Lovely, Perfect for our Family
We stayed at three places on island and the Plantation House and Honokaa were very lovely. It was a blessing to be so close to the valley, which allowed us to visit twice. The view, the fruit, the garden were amazing! The house is cute, quaint with old Hawaii charm, beautiful traditional touches, very clean and the fresh flower arrangements and the fresh picked fruit from the orchards were very much appreciated. Loved that there was effort to recycle! The oranges (clementines?) were the best oranges we have ever had. Loved having our own bit of old hawaii in a neighbourhood with privacy. My son loved all the geckos and overall the house was perfect for our family. Thank you.
The rental sits on top of a hill, overlooking pastoral views and the Pacific Ocean all the way to Maui. Pure, clean air comes right off the ocean. Very quiet and peaceful location.
