Greenbank Cabin Rental Photos and Description

log cabin, sleeping loft, bathroom, kitchen, living room sleeps 2-3

Escape the hustle and bustle of city life, in this peaceful woodland cabin retreat. Just 1 hour from Seattle, this very private and secluded cabin in the woods is just a ferry ride away. Your vacation begins with a short 20 minute ferry crossing from Mukilteo to Clinton. You can feel the stress of everyday life melting away the moment the ferry leaves the shore. The perfect quick get-away to celebrate an anniversary, honeymoon or writers retreat.

The kitchen is fully stocked with small appliances; coffee pot, waffle iron, blender, toaster, crock pot, pressure cooker, iron skillets and large stainless steel pots for soup. There are plenty of utensils. The pantry is stocked with many staples, such as flour, sugar, coffee, teas, honey, olive oil, etc. There is a hot water dispenser lever at the kitchen sink. Great for a quick cup of tea.

The cabin can sleep 2-4 people, but is ideally intended for couples. There is 1 queen bed and 1 twin bed together in the upper loft and a comfy sofa in the Living Room. The bedding is new and soft. Plenty of fresh linens and towels are provided. Small shampoos and hand soaps are provided as well. Take a soak in the claw-foot tub during your stay. Bubble bath is under the sink. When the windows are open, it feels as if you are bathing in the midst of the forest. The only onlookers will be “Willow”, the mama deer and her fawn “Fern”.

Sip on a cup of tea in front of a warm crackling fire, by the large indoor rock fireplace. A fire is always prepped and ready to light upon your arrival. There is wood stacked beside the 'little people door' outside the living room. There is a gas grill on the outside deck. You are welcome to use it, or you can cook over the open fire pit. Smores’ are especially yummy at night. There are modified golf clubs turned into marshmallow roasting sticks available.

In the evenings, listen for the owl hooting to its mate through the trees. The cry of a majestic eagle as it soars overhead is always a memorable sound. When you are hiking the property to the State Park, see if you can find their nest very high up in the tops of 80-120 ft trees. They are absolutely amazing! In the morning, enjoy the tranquility of the property with a cup of coffee out on the front porch, while enjoying the small birds having their breakfast from the feeders. And it’s always entertaining to watch the playful chipmunks in a game of hide-and-go seek.

A bit of the cabin’s history:

This charming Log Cabin on 4 acres was built in 1902 by a ship builder and his three sons, in the midst of an 'Old Growth Forest. They used it as a fishing cabin. There was a fire on the island in 1910, but most of the trees around the cabin, and the cabin itself were spared. It was heated with a rock fireplace and an old stove that was built out of an expandable steel barrel, which is still on the property. When we purchased the cabin in 2007, the fireplace was falling in and had to be dismantled and rebuilt. A wonderful rock mason from Yugoslavia rebuilt it. Most of the stones came from an underground spring discovered on the island at the Naval Air Station in Oak Harbor. There are still several tons of rock on the property, which we hope to someday use to add a downstairs bedroom. There is a photo album in the living room containing many original pictures.

We tried to keep within the period of the early 1900’s in the kitchen. The stove is a replica of an old wood stove, but is actually electric. The old sink came out of a house in Seattle that was being torn down. What used to be a ladder to the sleeping loft is now a set of stairs made from the wood of one large tree milled on the property. The old loft ladder is now in the bathroom. It can be used to store suitcases above the washer and dryer. We have chosen mostly antiques for the furniture. They have a special charm and each piece has a story. There are many interesting stories about the cabin and various people who have called it home.

We hope you are blessed as you stay in our little cabin.

About The Owner

My name is LuAnn and I am a psychotherapist in private practice in Atlanta, Ga. My best friend is Deb, she is the Director of Nursing at a hospital here in Atlanta. I had visited Seattle on business and thought it was beautiful. During the summer of 2006, I decided to take a sabbatical from my practice to rest and finish writing a book. My husband, Sid, was going to be busy for several weeks of the summer. My son, Jacob was going to be in Army Boot Camp. He has safely returned from a one year deployment in Afghanistan and has gone back for a second deployment now. We would love for you to pray for him.

Deb came to visit me in 2006 and we decided to try to find a place to buy on the island. The cabin was scheduled for the wrecking ball. The ball is still in the front yard. We decided to rescue the lovely old structure. We also found that if we wanted it done on budget and on time, we would have to learn to do it ourselves. It took three years. We flew out from Georgia at least 8 times a year and stayed as long as we could. Sometimes it was like Laurel and Hardy! Sometimes it was like Bob Villa and Norm. We learned how to work 16 different saws and other electric tools, not to mention the hand tools. I went from high heels to steel toed boots. Deb went from business suits to bib overalls. We are both over 50 years old, so this was a real stretch. Sometimes we still can't believe we did it.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 2007

Why The Owner chose Whidbey Island

We wanted a place on the west coast. Washington is clean and beautiful. The color of the ocean is indiscribable. The fishing in the fall is amazing. Many fishermen/women have pulled 14-28 pound salmon from the shore. We hope to fill our freezers up this year. Most islanders have 600 pounds in their freezers by the end of the season. Fishing off the shore is what most people do. You can take your frozen catch onto an airplane if you pack it in dry ice and put it into a regular cooler, no styrofoam allowed.

What makes this cabin unique

When my husband and I come to the cabin it is a time to really concentrate on each other, with few distractions. When Deb and our other girlfriends visit, it is a time to laugh, talk, cook or not cook, stay up late to watch movies or read. We dance, sing and pray together. There are so many amazing sights to see on the island. Greenbank is centrally located, making this the perfect vacation base for visiting all of the charming seaside towns in either direction.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My significant other and I were looking for a secluded, relaxing, peaceful place to celebrate our anniversary and both our birthdays. We are both from the PNW and did not want to travel far. For us it was a short drive and ferry ride. This was the perfect place, set far back in the woods in the most beautiful location. From the story of how Eagles Landing came to be, the hard work and love that two best friends put into this place, it was just incredible. Neither of us wanted to go home. It didn't matter if it rained or shined. Hearing the rain hitting the roof while having the fireplace stoked was exactly what we were looking for. I personally loved the bathroom and the old claw tub. There are no curtains or blinds, really they are not needed. While soaking in the tub you can watch the birds fly from tree to tree. Everything listed in the description was very true but to see it in person is even better. The owner was most helpful and we visited a few of the recommended cafe's etc. I cannot wait to go back. We were looking up dates before we even left.

Great Northwest Experience!

This cabin is amazing!!! We rent from lots of VRBO properties and this was one of the best! The cabin is even better than it looks in the photos. It has EVERYthing could could possibly need. The little winding driveway goes through the deep and emerald green forest. When you arrive, the cottage is sitting in a sunny little clearing and it feels like there is no one within miles of you! Very private and quiet. The bedroom is in an upper loft with a big window at the head of the bed. We slept with the window open, breathed the clean forest air and were lulled to the soothing sounds of the rainforest. Heavenly! There is a nice yard with lots of seating for relaxing outdoors. We look forward to staying here again!!

Such a Special Place

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I got married here, a very tiny wedding with only 30 people, but it was amazing! The cabin is the most wonderful and magical little place, tucked away in a brilliantly green forest, down a little gravel road. It has so much character and is an absolutely wonderful place! Lou Ann was very nice and friendly and helpful. We stayed for our honeymoon here as well, and enjoyed the serenity and privacy. Planning on coming back in the future!

Amazing stay

  • 5 of 5

This has to be the cabin that inspired Hansel and Gretl. It was one of the coolest places we have ever stayed. From the minute you pull down the long driveway you are a million miles from Seattle. The cabin is quiet and serene. We spent hours drinking cider and sitting on the porch reading. My husband runs a construction company and must have spent the majority of his time looking at the wood and inspecting how well the cabin was made....He was blown away by the details. The bed was SO cozy and comfortable. It's pretty centrally located, we went back and forth between Langley and Coupville for coffee and snacks. After spending a day hiking deception pass we couldn't wait to get back to soak in the tub. This is now a staple for us for Fall in Seattle. It was the most amazing place. And Luanne could not have been an easier/more gracious host!

Honeymoon Cabin

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for a nice cabin for my wife and I to stay for our honeymoon. This cabin ended up being perfect. It was nestled away in the woods, with plenty of seclusion so we never had worry about privacy. We had to travel from the East coast, so the nice stock of pantry items got us through our first breakfast, after which we were able to go grocery shopping. A few of the days we used the car to travel to some local (the Earth Sanctuary, Greenbank Farms, Pacific Rim Institute for Falcon day) and some not-so-local (Deception Pass & Olympic Peninsula for Mt. Townsend hike) attractions. Other days we left the car and used the path behind the cabin to go to South Whidbey State Park or we used the bikes and fishing poles to go to Bush point to catch Salmon (well, just one 9 pound silver...). One of the cooler days we spent relaxing in front of the fire in the living room. While we were out about we discovered that the island had so many ripe blackberries that my wife and I were constantly stopping to pick and eat them. Overall we felt the cabin was a perfect balance of seclusion and accessibility to local attractions.

This place was absolutely perfect! Cozy, quiet, private, everything we were looking for. Also loved the claw foot tub. The personal touches were wonderful. We saw all hard work and the love that was put into this cabin. Thanks so much for sharing it with all of us.
