About Eric & Pat Lampinen

The owners Eric & Pat, grew up in the Detroit area and moved to northern Michigan in 1977. We've lived in the same home for over thirty seven years only a half hour away from the cabin. We love the northern Michigan lifestyle and beauty and wish to share our love of the area with everyone.

Eric & Pat Lampinen purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Eric & Pat Lampinen chose Crystal Mountain, Thompsonville

Betsie River Getaway is centrally located in the Manistee, Benzie, and Lelanau county area, the most beautiful and scenic location in the state. Lake Michigan with it's magnificent vistas, massive sand dunes, and uncrowded beaches are only a few of the area assets. Our inland lakes, rivers, forests, fall colors, and the miles of highway winding through it all with M-22 in particular, infuse the soul with peace and tranquility. A scroll through our ten years of guestbook comments are convincing proof you've found your ideal location. Guestbook comments are available below.

What makes this cabin unique

Betsie River Getaway rests on the bank of the picturesque Betsie River. One of only a few rivers in Michigan designated as 'Wild and Scenic'. This air conditioned cabin interior is distinct with vaulted, beamed ceilings and rough sawn wooden walls. The property is enveloped by a dense canopy of trees that provide privacy and solitude. Deer, woodpeckers, turkeys, and dozens of other creatures call BRG home as well and provide hours of viewing entertainment.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved staying at BRG. Tuesday night we went all out at the Thistle restaurant here at Crystal Mountain. Wednesday we lunched at Traverse City and took the scenic drive to Northport where we spent a few hours at Green Bird Cellars which is Michigan's only certified organic winery. It was amazing! We stopped at Frankfort at the Stormcloud Brewery for two meals and watched the sunset mixed with a storm coming in off the lake. It was breathtaking! Our last full day we conquered the dune hike at Sleeping Bear. Thank the lord for a wonderful place to stay, good bed, and coffee this AM. All parts of my legs needed it.

The workmanship of your home and careful detail is wonderful. Everything was so well thought out. The wood is nearly seamless with nice straight lines. The tile work and lighting is perfect. The deck and hanging lights are beautiful. Thank you for having maps and reference material! I spent two hours bird watching while using the book you left in the basket. It was a little cool a couple of mornings and the gas fireplace was perfect for keeping us warm while we drank coffee and read. We made wonderful memories during our visit which was highlighted by your care. I'll definitely keep my eye on your calendar for winter months to see if we can nab a few days with our older kids to come ski. Oh, I almost forgot, I love the stars around the window and above the table. Thank you so much

Gem of a cabin in the woods!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were fortunate to find Betsie River Getaway available to rent for Valentine's Weekend. We typically book a room at Crystal Mountain for a long ski weekend, but found the affordable options were booked over a month in advance. We decided to look at rentals nearby, and came across BRG. What a wonderful find! We hope to become regular renters in the future, and look forward to exploring the area with our kayaks during another season. It's obvious the owners take great pride in their home and care about their renters experience. We were first welcomed with a personal message at the entryway from Eric and Pat wishing us a pleasant stay. When we walked into the kitchen, we found chocolates left for us with another note. Nice and simple touches that made a great impression on us, and made us feel welcomed and at home. Thank you again for being such gracious hosts and letting us stay at your wonderful cabin in the woods.

Fantastic experience

  • 5 of 5

This property is wonderful. The owners go out of their way to make the cabin warm and welcoming. The flower boxes and pots added a pop of color to the woodsy setting. There are so many different venues from which to enjoy the property----there is a lovely back deck, firepit w/benches and chairs, wooden swing overlooking the river, deck chairs overlooking the river, and a little dock on the river from which you can climb down into the river and get into a chest high swimming hole. The birdfeeders were full and we saw at least 15 different bird varieties--and to make identification easier, the owner has a "birds of MI" book for use. Kitchen complete w/all cooking utensils etc. Cabin was immaculate. Neighborhood is quiet. Convenient to Crystal Mountain if you don't feel like cooking. Would highly recommend the pie stand around the corner--pies and choc chip cookies, yum. We left every day to find a rail trail for cycling, or kayaked on the Betsie out of Crystal Mtn. We got to some great trails w/in 30-45 mins. Our daughter was at camp at Interlochen and that was about a 20-25 min drive. Cabin was a welcoming and comfortable retreat from the world. I would highly recommend it.

A dream come true!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was so wonderful! All of the comforts of home with peacefulness and serenity. The birds and squirrels were fun to watch drinking coffee on the deck. The sky lights and open design to the cabin were beautiful. It was so much fun and enjoyment to be there. We can't wait for our next visit to BRG!!!! This is an all seasons guarantee for relaxation, peace, and enjoyment!

Beautiful, Relaxing Stay

  • 5 of 5

The Betsie River Getaway is the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. The cottage itself is clean and well-appointed, and Eric and Pat made us feel very welcome. We fit four adults quite comfortably. Small details such as the filled bird feeders, flowers, ease of use, and ample outdoor living space really makes BRG stand out. We had a lovely time canoeing the river on Saturday and the location allows easy day trips to area attractions, as we spent Sunday at Lake Michigan. We had a lovely stay.

We just keep coming back!

  • 5 of 5

We are now nearing a decade of enjoyment with the Betsie River Getaway. Spending a week here each summer is a family tradition and one we don’t see ending anytime soon. We’ve enjoyed the cabin, the property and the associated amenities so much we work to introduce it to others in our family. This year my wife and I were unable to make to the cabin for the entire week but my folks were happy to jump in as the kids did not want to miss out on the trip. Rather than speaking of all one can do ‘Up North’ suffice it to say that this is centrally located to everything you’d want to do. Frankfort, Crystal Lake, Sleeping Bear Dunes to the West; Manistee, Luddington, Dune Rides to the South; Traverse City, Suttons Bay, that various peninsula’s and wineries to the North; and of course the Betsie River in the backyard and Crystal Mountain a mile down the road. The cabin is incredibly clean. I don’t know how they do it, but it is like walking into a five star hotel. They have apportioned it with everything you could think of needing (washer, dryer, pots, pans, dishes, grill – gas or charcoal) and thinks you wouldn’t think of (hammock, dock, bird feeders, waffle iron). The property is huge and with the trees you feel very secluded. Regular s’more creation is required and easily accomplished over the fire pit (a skill which I’ve not perfected – making fires, not s’mores – those are messy). Sitting on the deck, reading, and watching the birds – be the bluejays, woodpeckers, or humming birds – dine while the squirrels try to get the food and the chipmunks snatch what falls make for a wonderful afternoon. While the goal of any vacation is to leave work behind, I was unable to do so when we came back the following Friday to help them pack I had to spend the workday on the deck working. Best office ever! Had the birds, the sun, the breeze, no reception probs with my phone and the wifi worked better than most Panera’s. Finally Eric and Pat are incredible hosts. While you may never meet or see them their welcoming presence is evident and will be felt by all. From the kind e-mails in advance of a visit, the periodic updates on cabin improvements or area events, to the messages or gifts upon arrival. I cannot thank them enough for giving us this family tradition. While I’m in no rush to be older, our kids our now in high school, and I look forward to someday sharing this area with future generations.
