As a retired interior designer of Swedish-Dutch heritage, it was natural to design and build this cottage for my mother to her requirements and nostalgia for her homeland. Having lived on the big Island for over 37 years, my love for this area has remained steadfast. Guests of the Cottage feel the energy and special European touches which make it a welcoming experience. Writers, families, honeymoon couples, retired friends, all have had their own individual reactions, and all have been happy guests. As we say here- 'E Komo Mai'- Welcome! Karin Hazelhoff Roelfzema purchased this cottage in 1986
This cottage was built for my mother so that she could be fairly close to our home after my father died. We had chosen this area originally for its privacy, green surroundings, healthy altitude and temperate climate.
Location is out of the 'vog zone',( typically around Kona) and temperatures are moderate without need of air conditioning. Access to beaches and scenic vistas are within a short drive, and Mauna Kea is visible as you walk the country road which fronts the Cottage.
What a great find! My husband and I stayed at this place and used it as a base camp while we toured the island. Karin was so wonderful both in her e-mailing with answers to all of our questions to the wonderful greeting once we arrived. The house was perfect, off the beaten path, quiet but close to shopping and sightseeing. The kitchen was a big bonus for us, we stocked up at the farmer's market, grocery store and enjoyed preparing some of the local cuisine. Karin's pantry was also well stocked so check what is in the house before you go crazy and buy a whole lot of supplies. There was so much cooking items, anybody would be happy to cook there. Thanks Karin for such a wonderful stay, would recommend this place for anyone!
This is a wonderful little get away up in the green hills with a quaint lane and bridge. It is a great place to watch the birds in the yard and enjoy the flowers, but the best part is that you feel so cared for. Karin provides a wonderful personalized assortment of goodies for breakfast and snacks. There are fresh flowers everywhere (unless you are allergic). There is a wealth of cooking utensils, pots and pans. We enjoy cooking at home and this made it easy. The Cottage was one of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii. When we return we would want to stay here again.
Nestled in lush, up country greenery, Skandia has every convenience beautifully presented. The owner has gone out of her way to provide a most pleasant experience. The accommodations were outstanding; very comfortable & homey. Picturesque views of the observatory. Would go back in a heart beat.
My wife and I stayed at Skandia Cottage for one week of our 18 days on the Big Island. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The cottage is in an inviting wooded area, very well kept with all the amenities you need. Karin is a very pleasant lady and added a personal touch with fresh fruit, fresh farm eggs and cream, locally baked bread and locally grown coffee! The location is great for exploring the Kohala, Hamakua and Hilo districts. The quaint little town of Honoka'a is close by for groceries. I highly recommend this property and would definitely stay there again!
This was my third visit to Skandia cottage, I like it so much. For me it provides the perfect environment from which to explore the Island, take photographs and experience the aloha of the real Hawaii. The cottage always feels fresh and inviting and provides everything I could possibly wish for during my stay. Thank you for making each stay so very special.
The cottage provided comfortable living arrangements for two couples. One unit has a full kitchen which we used for breakfast and dinner; we shopped for food in Waimea and recommend the Food Land (next to the Starbucks in the Parker Ranch shopping center). Our hostess had coffee and jams and fresh fruit in the kitchen for our arrival, and we found the pantry stocked with cleaning materials, trash bags and cooking supplements. The Wifi was reliable if a bit slow. In short, everything was as advertised and better than expected. The cottage was clean and well maintained.
On some mornings we could see the peak of Mauna Kea from the living room window. Waimea is about 12 miles west and Honokaa about 5 miles east via Old Mamalahoa Highway, which is in heavy growth to the east and open fields to the west. A car is necessary for the entire stay, with many of the best sights in the north (as Waipi'o Valley lookout and Pololu Valley lookout and access) and on the west coast (go to Hapuna Beach, or Waikoloa Beach Park on A-Bay), eat at Pesto Cafe in Kawaihae, and bring your map.
Map: I bought the "Hawai'i Island Atlas and Map: A Guide to the Big Island" early in our trip and used it continually for our stay. The best $7 I spent in Hawaii (though it doesn't have Kapana Drive on it, the location of the cottage.
