About Karin Hazelhoff Roelfzema

As a retired interior designer of Swedish-Dutch heritage, it was natural to design and build this cottage for my mother to her requirements and nostalgia for her homeland. Having lived on the big Island for over 37 years, my love for this area has remained steadfast. Guests of the Cottage feel the energy and special European touches which make it a welcoming experience. Writers, families, honeymoon couples, retired friends, all have had their own individual reactions, and all have been happy guests. As we say here- 'E Komo Mai'- Welcome! Please open the link for guest's comments.

Karin Hazelhoff Roelfzema purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Karin Hazelhoff Roelfzema chose Honokaa

This cottage was built for my mother so that she could be fairly close to our home after my father died. We had chosen this area originally for its privacy, green surroundings, healthy altitude and temperate climate.

What makes this cottage unique

Location is out of the 'vog zone',( typically around Kona) and temperatures are moderate without need of air conditioning. Access to beaches and scenic vistas are within a short drive, and Mauna Kea is visible as you walk the country road which fronts the Cottage.

The owner is someone that cares dearly that you enjoy your time in her rental. From welcoming flowers to breakfast "fixings" in the fridge you'll be greeted with big island hospitality. The location half way between Hilo and Kona make it super easy to investigate all points of intetest in the northern parts of the "Big Island". A secluded location provides privacy with a historic city only 4 miles away. If your looking for a secluded, getaway with a local flavor coupled with people that care you'll have picked the perfact place to stay.

Owner's Response: This is a good summation of why I really enjoy having guests who are both explorers and have sensitivity to the environment that exists in this area of Hawaii Island. A personal touch is the most valuable asset any owner can provide to appreciative guests, while also respecting their privacy. At the same time, guests who leave the premises in super condition-- even watering plants!-- are a gift of returned 'Aloha'. An Appreciative owner !

What a great find! My husband and I stayed at this place and used it as a base camp while we toured the island. Karin was so wonderful both in her e-mailing with answers to all of our questions to the wonderful greeting once we arrived. The house was perfect, off the beaten path, quiet but close to shopping and sightseeing. The kitchen was a big bonus for us, we stocked up at the farmer's market, grocery store and enjoyed preparing some of the local cuisine. Karin's pantry was also well stocked so check what is in the house before you go crazy and buy a whole lot of supplies. There was so much cooking items, anybody would be happy to cook there. Thanks Karin for such a wonderful stay, would recommend this place for anyone!

Wonderful Experience

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful little get away up in the green hills with a quaint lane and bridge. It is a great place to watch the birds in the yard and enjoy the flowers, but the best part is that you feel so cared for. Karin provides a wonderful personalized assortment of goodies for breakfast and snacks. There are fresh flowers everywhere (unless you are allergic). There is a wealth of cooking utensils, pots and pans. We enjoy cooking at home and this made it easy. The Cottage was one of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii. When we return we would want to stay here again.

Ono hale filled with aloha

  • 5 of 5

Nestled in lush, up country greenery, Skandia has every convenience beautifully presented. The owner has gone out of her way to provide a most pleasant experience. The accommodations were outstanding; very comfortable & homey. Picturesque views of the observatory. Would go back in a heart beat.

Owner's Response: I believe I must be one of the happiest 'hostesses' for rentals. My guests are interesting, and so appreciative of the small but important things which are done to make stays special. My advice to other owners.. take extra time for providing a perfect vacation! One caveat however: Small children would not be happy with the separate entrance to the back studio. Teenagers love it!

Charming, picturesque and pleasing...

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at Skandia Cottage for one week of our 18 days on the Big Island. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The cottage is in an inviting wooded area, very well kept with all the amenities you need. Karin is a very pleasant lady and added a personal touch with fresh fruit, fresh farm eggs and cream, locally baked bread and locally grown coffee! The location is great for exploring the Kohala, Hamakua and Hilo districts. The quaint little town of Honoka'a is close by for groceries. I highly recommend this property and would definitely stay there again!

This was my third visit to Skandia cottage, I like it so much. For me it provides the perfect environment from which to explore the Island, take photographs and experience the aloha of the real Hawaii. The cottage always feels fresh and inviting and provides everything I could possibly wish for during my stay. Thank you for making each stay so very special.
