Located on your very own private sandy beach on Lake Michigan on the most coveted area, this beautiful cottage is a short walk from Harbor Springs and directly across from an 18-hole golf course. We have 5 full bedrooms (Q,Q,D,D,T/T/T) plus a breezy sleeping porch with swinging bed. Sit on your huge front porch, overlooking your private beach, with panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the lights of Bay Harbor and Petoskey. Create your own family tradition -- this is a lake cottage filled with antiques and the character of Northern Michigan that you will return to year after year. It is spacious enough to accommodate your entire family, yet still intimate and cozy beyond belief. We have a huge living room with natural stone fireplace (we supply the wood to keep the fires burning), provide a full entertainment system (cable, DVD and stereo) and beach games galore (badminton, croquet and more!). A full kitchen is equipped with all the accouterments a gourmet could hope for.
A large dining room provides full picturesque views of the lake for family dinners and game night. A sunny, very private back deck, offering its own views of the lake and the herb garden, is ideal for a peaceful morning cup of coffee.
We are a family of 10 including 3 sons, their wives, and 3 grandchildren all of whom adore this little piece of heaven. My husband and his sisters came up as children with their parents, their father being the summer minister at the Episcopal Church in town. They purchased the cottage in 1950 after several years of renting and we retained ownership in l980 and thus my children spent wonderful weeks at this magical place swimming, taking sailing lessons, running around the property and having a great time. Now their children are doing the same.
Mary Higgins purchased this house in 1950
We loved our week at the cottage! A wonderful time! Plenty of room to spread out. Accommodations were comfortable. Porch was a beautiful gathering place for conversation and reading -- a favorite place! Kitchen, along with pots and pans and utensils, allowed us to cook most meals. Great combination of things to do and time to relax. Exceeded expectations!
We took a day trip to the Thorne Swift Nature Preserve (just up the road), trip up M 119 (Tunnel of Trees), and swimming on Wilderness Beaches. Also enjoyed wine tasting at Pondhill Farm - and squash rocket.
The beach is sandy and the shoreline is a bit rocky. If you plan to wade or swim, we recommend water shoes. We rented paddle boards from Outfitters and had a fun time with them.
Loved it! A precious spot with fantastic memories!
We rented this charming, historic cottage with two other couples in August, 2011. Four of us played golf at the various courses in the area; one couple enjoyed the public tennis courts in town near the pier and some of us enjoyed wind-surfing whenever possible. You can get some great exercise by walking into town and back - about 2.5 - 3 miles round trip). The decor of the cottage is cozy and charming with all the amenities anyone could need. We had fun creating various meals after visiting the Farmer's Market Wednesday morning. It's a short walk down the steps to your own private beach where you can enjoy sunbathing or reading but "the porch" is the shining feature of this cottage. It beckons you to come and relax; serenity at it's best on a quiet afternoon, cocktails in the evening with great conversation; naps, games - you name it! It's the best - we'll be back
This home is located outside of Harbor Springs on a very quiet small drive with just 3 other homes. The homes on either side are magnificent. This property is the only rental. The porch is fabulous with lots of wicker furniture and a nice swing. It has a nice view of the lake although you cannot see the beach at all due to all the trees, etc. We loved the porch for morning and evening chats and eating as well. The cottage is 100+ years old with wooden floors and I'm sure all the original woodwork. Antique lovers will adore it. Two families spent the week totaling 13 people. We had plenty of room including plenty of sleeping space. One bed was actually never used. The kitchen is small, but adequate, with a nice electric stove, frig, dishwasher, and all the necessary kitchen tools etc. along with gas and charcoal grills outside. The downstairs bathroom has been remodeled and is nice with tons and tons of towels. The upstairs bathroom is small with a claw foot tub. We could have used more bathroom space with our number of people but scheduling was not an issue. There is only one TV in the main living room and wireless internet as well. The landscaping is lovely surrounding the 30-40 steps which lead down to the private beach. The beach was very rocky along with the sand. A new dock was installed this year but the rocks reach far out into the water. I would suggest some type of water shoes. Many children's toys are provided on the beach but the kayaks and boat lying there are not yours to use. This home does not have AC and we were there during an extremely warm week in Mich. The breeze off the lake did help at night, but many times the house was stuffy. This home is centrally located to nearby Petoskey which I enjoyed more than Harbor Springs. We visited Petoskey State Park beach and spent the day on a boat at Lake Charlevoix. We also visited Mackinaw Island which is a 40 min drive. The golf course at the top of the drive as of this year (2011) no longer accepts non-members. My son, the golfer, was able to find another course nearby. I would not agree that this home is a short walk to town; its over a mile with no sidewalks and no area really conducive to walking. A bike ride perhaps - or a short drive to town. Visit Yummies in Harbor Springs for ice cream. It was delish. I fell in love with Northern Michigan; it seemed like Florida with pine trees. The lakes are lovely and I hope to visit again.
My family and I just returned from a week long stay at this lovely cottage. It is charming, spacious, and relaxing. We miss the big front porch already!
We had an amazing time and really enjoyed the proximity to town, our own beach, and all the little things that the family thought of. There was never a shortage of beach toys, kitchen utensils, towels, or anything else for that matter.
We had a family of 8 adults and we never felt like we were running out of room. The golf course across the street is open to the public at 1:30pm every day, so plenty of tee times were made there along with other courses in the area!
We loved this cottage and hope to be back next year. It was very special and we have no complaints! Thank you for the amazing vacation!
Cottage is a hundred years old and has character but has not been updated and is in need of some TLC and a good cleaning. You can walk to Harbor Springs but the driveway and road are narrow and busy - no sidewalks! Not much area to walk the beach either. The beach is nice but the water table is too low for fishing, or boating because there isn't a dock to reach deeper water. We were able to walk to a sandbar that was aprox. 100 to 150 yards out. Little kids can swim but not adults because of water table. House is a distance from beach and beach can't be seen from porch due to a lot of trees and underbrush so adults must be on beach to supervise children but there is no relief from sun such as shade or swimming. We did not stay for the entire week that we rented- we left two full days early. My recommendation would be to personally visit any rental prior to booking. I didn't do that in booking this cottage and I was extremely disappointed.
