Zona Centro House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4-5)

If you've ever been to Guanajuato City, you understand why we have emphasized STREET LEVEL! Most vacation rentals in Guanajuato require a steep and exhausting climb with no vehicle access. Because Guanajuato is a very hilly city, a “good” location is one that is in the main valley. Our house is conveniently located on a pedestrian-only level callejon (street) just off Calle Juarez, one of the city’s main streets. The house is in a neighborhood called Tepetapa. It is steps from the square where you will find many small shops and services, including a tortilleria, butcher, fruit and vegetable stands, hardware, hair dresser, furniture store, etc. Also at the square you can easily hail a cab or hop on a bus to all parts of the city. Both taxis and buses are extremely inexpensive and readily available.

The house itself was designed for two couples and it provides lots of privacy. The first floor has a large foyer, a den with hide-a-bed, a powder room, and a master bedroom with ensuite. The second floor has the kitchen, a dining room, a living room and another master bedroom with ensuite. Stairs lead from this floor up to the rooftop which has a BBQ, eating area, laundry and amazing views of the city. In both bedrooms, there are twin beds that can be pushed together if that suits you better. We have many windows that open, but they are supported by beautiful wrought iron features for your security. The second floor also has two sets of double doors opening onto Juliette balconies. Our recent renovation added modern appliances, and fixtures, WiFi and cable TV. This home has many wonderful Mexican features, including hand painted Talavera tiles and other authentic motifs and local art but, at the same time, the modern appliances and comfy furniture will add to your enjoyment of staying in the picturesque colonial city of Guanajuato.

If you want to see all the sights at a leisurely pace, we are an easy stroll to downtown and all the restaurants, patios and the beautiful colonial buildings and churches which make Guanajuato, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so special to visit. As you head towards town, you will pass the large, modern supermarket, Comercial or, a few blocks further on, you will pass the Mercado Hidalgo, Guanajuato’s large traditional Mexican indoor market. It is totally safe and you will experience the fun of shopping for fresh local produce and browsing through the interesting kiosks.

The local shopkeepers and our neighbors speak only Spanish, but they are happy to help you with yours: buy a chicken and get a free lesson on verb conjugations! Every outing is an opportunity for a cultural exchange!! We think that living in a vibrant Mexican neighborhood enhances the experience of being in Guanajuato and hope that, if you choose to stay in our home, you will feel the same.

Our house is managed by a friendly Mexican family. They are delightful, easy to work with, and will be happy to help you practice your Spanish. They can arrange for a driver to meet you at the airport and drive you directly to the house if that is a help upon arrival.

About Terri

We are two couples (sister and brother and spouses) from Victoria, B.C., Canada. We fell under the spell of Guanajuato and wanted to own property here. Once we renovated the property, we realized that we would love to share this comfortable home with other visitors to Guanajuato. It's a special place to safely enjoy the city in comfort.

Terri purchased this house in 2008

Why Terri chose Guanajuato

We looked for over a year for an affordable property at street level and were so happy to find this home located in a traditional Mexican neighborhood, rather than in the center of the tourist areas. We've found Tepetapa to be a hidden jewel, safe and with warm and friendly neighbors. It's just a bit off the beaten bath, but within an enjoyable walk to all the downtown fun.

What makes this house unique

We enjoyed furnishing the home for our personal comfort, and know you will spend wonderful times here as we have. You will truly love the fact that we are on street level, as your days will already be spent walking the city - at the end of the day, we always are grateful not to have a climb a callejon to our house, especially when we're carrying groceries! There are also numerous public transportation options to the house. We are truly happy to share this property with you and hope you enjoy your stay in our home!

What a lovely place!

  • 4 of 5

My partner and I stayed in this wonderful house for 10 days during the Cervantino Festival.

What a wonderful place! Terri, the owner, and Martha, the manager, were available to us even before booking by responding promptly to all our questions. It made for the booking process to be seamless.

Martha even arranged with a driver to pick us up to the airport as well as to take us to the airport when was time to leave.

The house is exactly as shown and it has all then amenities expected. It was great to be at the street level in an enclosed callejon which made the street very quiet as cars did not go through. The view from the rooftop is phenomenal!

It is about 10-15 minutes pleasant walk to Mercado Hidalgo, Plaza de la Reforma, Historic District and other wonderful attractions.

We felt safe and cared for.

Very comfortable home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved the house. It was so cute and cozy. The view from the rooftop was fabulous. I even loved using the laundry room up there :) The beds and furnishings were all excellent quality. The house is located just on the edge of town - with a totally doable walk, even for our young kids - and a bit out of center of town noise. There is a stretch of stairs (maybe 5 or so) that are open on one side. Our 3.5 year old was fine on them, but it might need some consideration for younger ones.

Charming house excellent for 2 couples

  • 5 of 5

This house is perfect for 2 couples with its 2 master bedrooms each with its own bathroom and sitting area.

Its location in the flat part of the city makes it a comfortable 15 walk to the center.

Go during the Cervantes Festival-it's great fun!

Cute and comfy home

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this delightful home during our ten day trip to Guanajuato. This home had many positive aspects to it.

-Having two bedroom/bathroom suites was convenient and the beds were extremely comfortable.

-The kitchen was small but well equipped and having the bottled water ready was a nice touch

-The terrace offered a nice view of the colorful city and the washer/dryer located on this level were new and worked well.

-It is extremely easy to catch a taxi at the top of the callejon at any hour (we needed to catch one at 5:30 am and it took less than a minute) and were inexpensive, charging about 45-50 pesos to the bus station.

-The major attractions are just a 15 minute walk down the main street.

-It's close to grocery stores and restaurants but we did most of our shopping at the veggie/fruit shops nearby. At night, there is a lady who sells the best pastries/bread and tamales in the little plaza at the top of the callejon.

The only complaints we had were that there is only one television and it is quite old and located downstairs. Additionally, the wifi didn't work in the upstairs bedroom. The stairs leading to the terrace are narrow and angled oddly which wouldn't be recommendable for small children.

Guanajuato is a beautiful and picturesque city that is definitely worth a visit. We felt very safe walking through the streets late at night and the people we talked to were incredibly friendly. It is centrally located which allowed us to also enjoy our day trips to Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende, Dolores Hidalgo and Leon, all of which were an inexpensive bus ride away. Enjoy!

My husband and I visited the city with a great friend of ours, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely home in Guanajuato. The set-up of the house is perfect for privacy when desired, while still being able to enjoy time together. Each floor has a master bedroom suite and a sitting/living room area - the kitchen is on the second floor which has lovely open windows and a balcony that allow the breezes off the hills to fill the area. We enjoyed having our coffee in the morning and our wine at night on the third floor balcony overlooking the dramatic city-scape.

The kitchen was well equipped and had everything you'd need to fix meals at home, but the food was so inexpensive and good in town, that we ate breakfasts at home and ate out the balance of the time. The beds were very comfortable and were generally able to lull us back to sleep when the dogs outside the building started to bark in the middle of the night. My husband is a light sleeper -- I'm not, so he had a bit of a problem one or two nights with the dogs. The house is far enough from the middle of the city that there is relatively little traffic noise - we specifically went to Guanajuato when we did, to enjoy the Festival of the Flowers in town on the Thursday prior to Palm Sunday. It was a MASS of people parading through the town, but little was really heard in our neighborhood after ten PM.

My husband is having some spine and back issues, so he has been using a cane - it was SO convenient to be able to leave the house, walk a few yards up the alley and have an area that was basically a cab stand at the head of the street. There was a bus stop as well, but we didn't use buses since you could basically take a cab anywhere in town for between three and four dollars US.

Everyone in Guanajuato is SO very friendly - we've never felt any safer on any of our trips outside of the country. We speak very little Spanish, but had utilized some Spanish tapes prior to our visit and were able to communicate on a basic level with no real issues - everyone was eager to help us. The large Wal-Mart style store is about three blocks from the house and has almost everything you could want. Many of the brands are the U.S. ones we're used to, and the prices are very low; everything seemed very fresh. Martha was wonderful and arranged to have John get us to and from the airport and got us reservations for dinner one night when our lack of Spanish was a problem. She is a delight.

Nearest Airport
20 Miles
Leon-Guanajuato International Airport (BJX)
Car: not necessary

For those of you bringing a car, there is a large inexpensive parking lot about 5 minutes away, although Guanajuato City is best enjoyed on foot! Since our home is uniquely on street level, you can take the bus or taxi right to the door!

Our home is located in the neighborhood of Tepetapa, a safe traditional neighborhood made up of Mexican families. It has its own little commercial area just outside the house, including internet cafes, bakeries, taco stands, artisan market, gift shops, etc. Although it's most fun to shop for food at the local tienditas (small markets/stores), there is a Comercial Mexicana (large grocery store) within a few minutes walk from the house!

Notes:
No callejon climbing on this home - we're located right on street level! If you've been to Guanajuato, you KNOW what an advantage that is. If you haven't, you should know that most rentals in Guanajuato require a climb to the house, some very steep and long (no vehicles allowed). Many require vigorously climbing steps as well. Our home is right on street level! The house will be fully cleaned and ready for your visit. If you would like to have the house cleaned periodically while you are in Guanajuato, the manager would be happy to arrange for someone to clean again for an additional fee.
