Our family came up to ride on the Creeper Trail. We arrived to see we had cookies made and waiting for us. Our son really enjoyed them. Said they were one of the best he'd ever had. We have stayed in many cabins but this was our first time renting ourselves. It was a wonderful experience to work with both Brad & Jackie. Jackie called to make sure we got in alright and to see if we needed anything. The yard is very dog friendly. They loved having the ability to roam around and sniff everything out and they were able to stay within our eye-site. The cabin location is very quiet and it was very relaxing to sit outside at night and also to wake up to the sound of birds chirping in the morning. Lovely views. Wish we had more time to spend at this cabin. We will definitely book again and recommend to all our friends looking for peace and quiet. We did come back from riding the Creeper Trail to find that some animal tried to get through the screen door. Glad we latched the door and glad the screen had metal backing to keep the animal out even though it tore the screen. We notified Brad as soon as we had cell service. Love how notes were left for us keeping us informed of local events going on during our stay. Our family appreciates and thanks you for letting us stay. Our son loved his loft area that is perfect for kids. My husband loved the reclining chair. Wished he could have brought it home with us. The cabin was very clean and kept up.
Very helpful communication and directions! The cabin was perfect for the 2 of us with gorgeous views...especially at sunset. I only wish we had more time to stay to enjoy the deck and fire pit. It was all around perfect!
We have stayed in many cabins in the mountains of Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and in the Pacific Northwest. Although this was one of the smallest cabins we have rented, it was one of the most memorable. There are three cabins on the 135-acre property, and two are identical in size. The two smaller cabins are placed far enough apart so that guests can feel privacy and solitude. The larger, 2 bedroom cabin is across the creek adjacent to VA Highway 58, but road traffic is very light and the creek delightfully noisy.
The property itself is a joy to hike. There are miles of trails and plenty of cross-country exploring opportunities such as an off-trail hike up to some waterfalls high up on the property, which abuts National Forest Land and Whitetop Mountain, the second highest peak in Virginia. The owners have marked the trails well, and the trails themselves were once logging roads. We crossed four streams in one day and saw a large bard owl silently flying through the trees. Deer are abundant. I tried fly fishing the tiny pond on the property, which holds rainbow trout, then realized spin casting gear was far more suitable.
As for our cabin, it was spotless and had everything we needed with the exception of spoons. I think there were only 3 or 4 (Brad, please note). The cabin professes to sleep 6, but since there is only one bathroom, I would recommend no more than four people stay at one time or they will be fighting over it. The cabin is also tiny--400 square feet. It would seem much smaller than that with six people. I can imagine some of those guests needing to frequent the woods when the bathroom is unavailable:). The loft has two twin beds, and it would be great for kids under 13. The living room futon is queen-size.
One thing that surprised us is that the fireplace, once started, periodically turns itself on and off. At first we were worried but then figured out that it must be temperature sensitive. There is a space heater near the refrigerator and each room has its own electric heater built into a wall. Since the nights were warm for January (in the high 40s), we didn't even need the heat on at night since the cabin is well-insulated. Another note: one of the upper bedroom windows is cracked and needs replacing. I suspect a branch hit it. The bed itself has a foam mattress and is super-comfortable.
Overall, this is a great place to stay for active, outdoors-oriented people.
This was a wonderful vacation rental!
It is right off VA 58, but far enough up the mountain to be private - we saw no one, except the owner, and a bunch of deer, during our five-day stay. This cabin is on many acres of private property with hiking trails, and very well-maintained roads/driveways.
Ample A/C or heat if you need.
This little cabin was VERY clean and well-maintained, with a great layout. The view at sunset from the back yard was amazing.
The bed was firm and comfortable, with a gorgeous quilt and ample blankets. Water pressure in the shower was a joy, especially at 4000'. There's a built-in heater in the bathroom that I appreciated on chilly mornings.
There are tons of seating/dining options on the deck, the screened porch, or down by the fire pit. Kitchen had everything we needed, and there's a gas grill on the deck.
For those interested in the VA Creeper Trail: The property is about halfway between Whitetop and Green Cove stations.
We spent most of our days hiking and biking, Mt Rogers and Grayson Highlands.
Do know that there is no cell phone service here. There may be Internet if you go down by the lower cabin (access code for that was in our cabin, but we didn't check it out.)
Happily, they allow dogs with no pet fee or cleaning fee = AMAZING.
We use VRBO rentals for our vacations often. This one was the best value, and most comfortable stay I have ever had. Many thanks to the owners!
My first review went into an internet black hole, so I'm trying again... this cozy little cabin was exactly what we needed for a few days of R&R. It was the perfect size for the two of us and our four-legged kids. Nice kitchen for making meals, washer/dryer, TV. And it was spotless -- the cleanest rental we've stayed in. The owners are attentive and you can tell that they care about providing a great place for travelers. The property is 25 minutes from Damascus, which was perfect for us because we wanted to unplug and be away from town. We loved that it was so close to the Whitetop Station on the Virginia Creeper Trail. Super easy to park, ride down the trail, and get a shuttle back (we brought our own bikes). It's also very close to Whitetop Mountain, Jefferson Nat'l Forest and Mount Rogers recreation area, not to mention the AT. We enjoyed the trails on the property, watching the sunsets from the cabin, reading on the screened porch, terrific deck with a fire pit and grill, and there's even an area near the cabin for building a small fire and relaxing in Adirondack chairs. Nothing but nature in this beautiful spot. Very peaceful! We can't wait to return.
We had an awesome time -- the location and amenities were just what we needed for some R&R. We were here in summer, which was fabulous with temps in the 70s. The cabin has A/C, but being able to open windows to the fresh air and sounds of nature was what we preferred. The cabin itself was the perfect size for the two of us and our four-legged children, and it's a well maintained place with attentive and accessible owners. The cabin is situated in a beautiful spot, with trails on the property and pretty sunset views from the screened porch and the deck, which has a metal firepit and grill (there is also a terrific place for building a small fire on the ground outside the cabin, and lots of wood). This was the cleanest rental we've stayed in. It was spotless. The kitchen was also well-equipped, which is not always the case with rentals. As for location, the town of Damascus is about 25 minutes away, which was perfect for us because we wanted to be out of town. We loved that even though we were set back on several acres surrounded by woods (the property is more than 100 acres), the start of the Virginia Creeper trail was a very, very short drive -- it was so convenient to park at Whitetop Station and get a shuttle back from Damascus (we brought our own bikes, but you can easily rent them in the area). We liked that Whitetop Mountain is very close by as well, not to mention the AT, Jefferson National Forest and the Mount Rogers recreation area. Can't wait to return and recommend to anyone looking for a quiet getaway in the mountains of Virginia.
