This dream home was built in 2004-2005 and is a year-round home. The Loft Master bedroom with hand-hewn log queen bed has its own balcony overlooking the valley of maples to the east and the loft itself has the incomparable view of both dunes and Lake Michigan to the west. Attached to the master bedroom is a master bath with a glass tile double shower with inlaid mural. The dressing room/closet has its own hand-painted autumn mural.
THIS PROPERTY IS NOT for sale. There are a couple of 'For Sale signs on the entrance to the VERY long drive: there are people who are selling 2 acre plots of land below our property. The Golden Dunes cabin will NOT be for sale: this is our dream and will remain so.
There are 2 main floor bedrooms. The Flora and Fauna room has twin beds. There are drawers full of family-oriented games, cards, puzzles, and toys for your entertainment. The Quilt Room has a double log bed with single bunk above with the quilt theme throughout.
The main floor also has a full bath with massage shower and a vanity sink. All towels and linens are furnished. Great room and full kitchen finish the main floor. There are French double sliding doors out to the large deck. All bedrooms and the Great room have satellite TV with DVD and VCR.
Entrance level has 2 1/2 car garage, fully equipped laundry and entrance room with storage that includes water toys and floatables. An inflatable raft for your use is in the garage.
There is a lovely Nature Trail throughout our property. It is divided in two loops: a longer and shorter one: feel free to explore the hills, woods and meadows. You are free to hike, cross-country ski or snowshoe on the 26 acres. Follow the orange and yellow tagged stakes for the trail.
An outdoor grill is provided as well as plenty of seating on the large deck.
The laundry room has broom, vacuum and other cleaning supplies you may need throughout your stay.
An open sand area is great for children playing while adults enjoy the view or s'mores over the fire. Please never cut living trees. There is plenty of downed wood on the property. The fire pit also has plenty of seating in a great open area to enjoy evenings under the stars.

I am in my late 60s, currently mostly retired. I enjoy the beauty of outdoors and the serenity of privacy in my own space. I built this home from very special circumstances that we will share upon rental, if requested. It is quite an amazing, heartfelt story. I love this home and have placed special artwork from different countries we have visited there as well as Jill's artwork. She is the artist of the family. You will notice her rendition of the dunes in the Great room as well as a birchbark watercolor and the rock (all rocks from Lake Michigan) mosaic on the retaining wall as you come up to the property. There are also other paintings and a photo wall divider created by Jill. The coat racks in the entry are handmade, Jill painted them with native herbs: check them out! The brass bell collection that hangs on the stairway is also Jill's innovation. We enjoy meeting and conversing with people from all over and their unique stories. We rent the home, not only to be able to pay the taxes, but also, because we really enjoy sharing this lovely, beautiful spot with others. Our home is in Lansing, Mi. which is only 145 miles distant so easily accessible by us on a regular basis.
Jill Campbell-Mason purchased this house in 2004
This is a house that I custom-built. I had the wonderful pleasure of designing it and seeing it through to completion. It is my dream. I have always wanted a place that looks toward the setting sun. there is something magical about it. the west coast of Michigan is quite well-developed, but this section is not quite so overrun by tourists and has such unique features. Where else can you ride on the dunes? Where find that home-town atmosphere with a local restaurant (the Open Hearth Grill) that utilizes foods from this location? As you drive to the house you pass orchards-white and pink in the spring , hanging with apples and cherries in the summer. You also pass graceful fields of asparagus-golden in the autumn.
We love to walk the 26 acres and enjoy the stars from the deck at night. There is an unobstructed view, with no city lights intervening, of the Milky Way and the summer triangle. There are a family of turkeys who go by daily on their rounds, clucking and spreading their tail feathers. Deer are often seen on the property. Where else do you need to go for rejuvenation? After being at the beach or the dunes during the day, it is ABSOLUTELY wonderful to have your own space in the evening.
We will be gone to a funeral from July4 through July 11 out of the country: so please email inquiries during that time. I will be sure to get back with you as soon as possible after that. Thank you for you patience.
Stayed here for a week with our four-month old and parents and sister/husband and couldn't have been more happy with the house! The view was just breath-taking at times out the huge windows. You could see Silver Lake, the dunes, and Lake Michigan a couple miles (maybe even less?) away which was perfect because it was away from the hustle and bustle you have when you stay in a tourist town. But you were still minutes away from the dunes which made it very convenient.
There was a walk-in closet off the master suite that we used to put up the provided pack-and-play and it made for a great baby room. The rest of the house was perfect for our group (seven). There was plenty of room and we never felt like we were crowded.
A couple words of caution - the road up to the cabin is a sand drive-way that if you are driving a low sports car...it probably won't work too well, but any other vehicle, take it slow and and it's no problem! Also, there are alot of stairs to climb in the house, especially if you are staying on the master floor (four flights total). It's built on a hill so that is to be expected and I was happy to get the extra steps, but if you have trouble with stairs, this might not be the place for you.
Overall - we could not have been more happy with our stay. It really was a splendid getaway!
We really enjoyed the privacy of the location, yet only a few miles from all the Silver Lake action. Home was ideal for our family of 5. House was clean and overall a very nice stay. The dunes are visible from front deck or upstairs loft area.
The only issue was squirrels in the roof area...which woke us up several nights...not what u want on vacation. But the owner let a note stating that they are aware of problem and working to address. Also think the walking trails could be better maintained.
Overall I really liked this place and would stay again!
The property was clean and the home was very cozy! We enjoyed the local breweries and wineries and spent a morning hiking the dunes. It was a perfect weekend getaway!
We had a great two night stay at Golden Dunes...lots of sleeping room, plenty of linens (and even spare shampoo was provided), and a great view of Silver Lake and Lake Michigan. We were about a three minute drive from Silver Lake and there is even an restaurant you can walk to if you want someone else to cook. Would stay again!
