We are Illinois farmers and have 3 young children who love adventure. In our spare time we love to hike, fish, read, play games and relax as a family!
Kristen Walter purchased this cabin in 2009
The Driftless Area (an unglaciated corner of Southwest WI reminiscent of Upstate New York) is known for its scenic, wooded valleys, spring fed streams and rocky hilltops. It is a unique part of the country -- very different than much of the midwest -- and for those in the know, a special place to get away without having to go too far.
Our cabin was purchased unfinished and in some disrepair in 2009. Thanks to my architect wife's keen eye, some elbow grease and a desire to create something special we remodeled our cabin into the luxurious hideaway we have today. We enjoy sharing our little slice of heaven with others who appreciate the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the finer things in life. This is not a rustic cabin. While it is certainly off the beaten path, it is also modern, well-kept and luxuriously appointed. We appreciate guests who treat our cabin as their own home and have been very pleased to find that nearly all of our guests do so.
I booked the cabin for a weekend getaway with some friends from Chicago and it was a perfect place to relax and enjoy this part of Wisconsin. On the first night we went for a hike in the forest just across the street and on the second day went canoeing on the Wisconsin river, which was just a 45 minute drive from here. The cabin is gorgeous, in addition to being both well kept and equipped.
We had never been to this part of Wisconsin before and didn't really know what to expect, but we were so pleasantly surprised! The cabin was wonderful and just as described--super clean, very well appointed and private. Our 3 kids loved playing video games and watching movies! Our favorite part of the cabin was hanging out on the porch early in the morning before the kids were up...so peaceful. We went fishing down on the local river, tubing on the Wisconsin river, visited Taliesen and house on the rock, and enjoyed absolutely beautiful drives on the nearby country roads. We definitely recommend this home for some peaceful, fun and very special family time away! Thank you!!
Very well cared for property and home. Fishing was disappointing, no bites 🤔Area is very beautiful.
Our family of three had a delightful stay at the cabin, enjoying the comfort of the cabin and being outdoors. We didn't stray far from the cabin and had plenty to explore. We had drizzle and rain two of the days, but we were fully prepared in our rain gear, and had the best time trout fishing just below the cabin on Castle Rock Creek, watching a blue olive wing hatch and the brown trout literally jumping out of the water to feed on them. It was magical!
We explored the trail down to the creek from the cabin, and fishing upstream from the bridge each day, catching a range of brown trout as well as seeing muskrats, kingfishers, and a toad. The hike up to Castle Rock was also a fun adventure, and the ferns and trees growing up out of the rocks were amazing. We drove a short drive over to Big Spring Creek, where there was an easy hike to the spring, and beautiful brook trout.
We spent an afternoon out on the deck, enjoying a sunshine filled afternoon, listening to the birds, and having our meals outside. The kitchen was well-equipped for us to cook all our meals, and we do love to cook! The furnishings and decor were tasteful and functional, and felt cozy, warm, and comfortable. The beds slept well, with plenty of pillows and blankets. There were ample drawers, hooks and surfaces for our luggage and coats and other gear. The full bathroom was roomy and had lots of space to hang towels. Everything was very clean and organized.
The natural light in the cabin was absolutely wonderful - the view of Castle Rock was lovely, and it was a treat to stay here! We would definitely come again. Thank you for all the thought and planning that went into the cabin, it made for a fantastic experience!
My husband, myself, and two of our friends were looking for a cabin for a long weekend of relaxation, playing games, and exploring. Lucky for us, we found THIS cabin.
The cabin itself is positively gorgeous. The layout is something I couldn't have pictured, but was absolutely ideal for us. A full kitchen for making our own meals, a table large enough for board games, and a lofted living space with amazing breezes. The cabin was very well stocked. Linens and all the kitchen bits we needed to make our meals. The many windows are fantastic, and eliminated any need for us to utilize either the heat or the air as we were able to perfectly ventilate and really feel immersed in the woods around the cabin. We were also please with the quality of the Wi-Fi. None or our cell phones worked in the immediate area, but we were able to stay in touch via the wi-fi. We also brought along our Chromecast, and the wifi absolutely had sufficient strength to allow us to stream our own movies from home.
We loved the area. We hadn't planned to explore much, but found ourselves going for short hikes in the immediate vicinity. Popping into town to catch a Football game or stock up on junk food, we even followed a sign to a small winery were we had a fantastic chat with the owner.
The crowning glory of the weekend was the blood supermoon. We didn't plan the trip around the event, but they happened to coincide, and we had a positively amazing view, devoid of ambient light.
We eagerly await the day we can return.
