Three Retired Couples

  • 5 of 5

Mingray Cottage was the perfect setting for our Retired Couples' Getway. The pictures did, indeed, justify the charm and quaintness of this lovely home. The cottage has the feel of seclusion, is quiet, yet is close enough to all the amenities that the Door offers. We were fortunate to experience the siting of a mother doe with her three fawns outside on the lawn, at dusk one evening, during our stay. We, unanimously agreed that this would be a destination for future get-to-gethers. Would definitely recommend Mingary Cottage.

Perfect Girls Getaway

  • 5 of 5

An absolutely heavenly place for our Girls Getaway! The pictures depict the home perfectly and we were thoroughly charmed and completely thrilled with the Mingary Cottage. We are four women (around 40) from New York, Madison, Green Bay and the Twin Cities; all of us have traveled extensively and internationally and we know quality when we find it. Mingary exceeded our expectations! So quiet, peaceful and well appointed. Beds were very comfortable and there was plenty of room for all of us. Our cell phones did work (Verizon) and internet access was much appreciated. The television wasn't even used; but the wonderful porch sure was!! Enjoyed the provided fire pit one glorious night - the stars were amazing! Great location and easy access to the entire Door area. Our only issue (and it's only because we like to cook) was poor quality of the knives (not very sharp or in good shape); limited silverware (no soup or serving spoons) - but that did in no way detract from our experience! Instructions provided were very clear and much appreciated. We would highly recommend Mingary and will always treasure the memories we made there. Thank you for sharing your property!

In the area: we enjoyed all the galleries (Domicile in Sister Bay, Rusty Rabbit and Blue Dolphin in Ephraim); had an amazing "adult night" at the Hands On Art Studio where we tried our hand at glass creations; had an amazing afternoon exploring the trails at Cave Point south of Jacksonville; tried the "ummm..ewww" apple wine at Lautenbach's (hey, we tried it); and explored Peninsula State Park. Highly recommend the lunch at Chef's Hat Cafe in Ephraim (get the half sandwich and cup of soup that comes with pie!!).

All in all a wonderful time!

Family of 6, ages 11-83

Lovely, light, airy, spacious cottage on a dead end road. Beds were very comfortable and all slept better than they do at home! A few issues but we found Janell very quick to respond and appreciated her efforts to make right. We found that there is no cell phone service for Tracfone and Verizon at the cottage and surrounding towns. Wifi was good at the cottage and enabled the email communication we needed. As other reviewers have mentioned, the front porch was a big hit for all! We had our medium sized dog with us and he enjoyed the large front and back yard and sitting on the porch with us. We went to a number of places to eat and found we could take him with us, as long as there was outside seating. We were disappointed that dogs were not allowed on any of the 'beaches', which we can understand from a hygiene point of view, but we wanted to see what his reaction would be when he tried something deeper than a puddle for the first time! We liked eating at Shipwrecked in Egg Harbor, The Ice Cream Factory in Sister Bay, The Vikings Bar and Grill for a 'fish boil' in Ellison Bay, (don't rely on times and days given by the tourist information, call The Vikings Bar and Grill instead), Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant (they have the goats grazing on the roof) in Sister Bay. Visited Pennisular State Park and played miniature golf at the challenging Red Putter. Thoroughly enjoyed the musical 'Lumberjacks in Love' performed by the Northern Sky Theater, although we were too late in the season for their outdoor performances. We saw it at Door County Auditorium in Fish Creek. We recommend the middle rows of seats, from row 3 back, if any left, or middle of the left side looking at the stage. On our last night we arrived back at the cottage to see a doe and her two young fawns in the back yard!

The weekend of Labor Day saw Sister Bay teeming with people for Marina Fest, by the Monday most folk had left!

Piggly Wiggly in Sister Bay is the nearest grocery store, a few minutes drive away. There is also a Shopko.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kind words, Liz! Glad to hear the glitches didn't damper your enjoyment. Thank you for being such good sports! Just a note of info, mostly for the benefit of future guests: we hear varying reports about cell phone reception. However, you are the first people who have ever mentioned that they couldn't get cell reception with Verizon. In fact, we have Verizon ourselves and have never had a problem. Based on your experience, we are checking into the cost of installing a landline - we certainly don't want someone to have a problem and not have a method of communication!
