Crowded beaches, urban sprawl, traffic jams, and long lines in make-believe magic kingdoms…not the Florida vacation you were thinking of? There is still a place where the unspoiled natural beauty remains as it was 50 years ago. Where the pace is still island time and the natives are very friendly.
One Particular Harbour is located on the Atlantic side of Ramrod Key at mile marker 27.5 on the edge of the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary and in the middle of the Great Heron Refuge. A wide screen enclosed porch surrounds the main living area on three sides. In the backyard, the porch faces our private dock on a free flowing canal with direct access to the ocean. The front porch has an uninterrupted sunset view overlooking a shallow water bay and natural mangrove wetlands with Niles Channel and Summerland Key off in the distance. And the adjacent vacant lot to the south is completely landscaped with coconut palms and natural plants which provide a level of privacy that makes you feels like you are in your own secluded tropical sanctuary. But what really makes this house so special is the indoor outdoor living. Open all the french doors surrounding the living room and enjoy the cool breezes and spectacular sunset views.
After a restful first night in paradise, rise early, and step through the French doors from your bedroom onto the screen enclosed porch. If you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of wading birds like, scarlet ibis, rosette spoonbills, and blue and white herons feeding in the shallow salt pond right outside your doorstep. You might even spot one of the tiny key deer, as they forage for their morning meal. Sit back and relax as you enjoy a fresh brewed coffee and the cool morning breeze. You’re on island time and there’s nothing more important to do than enjoy the beauty of nature as it unfolds before you, letting the stresses from the real world melt away.
Embrace the new day by riding our bicycles up to Five Brothers Market for some authentic Cuban coffee and a fresh baked Cuban pastry. After the refreshing bike ride you find yourself energized and starting to get hungry. You decide to join the locals over at the Big Pine Coffee Shop, just a short five-minute drive away. The smells of their great breakfast specials, eggs, pancakes, and bacon fill the air. You grab a seat next to a couple of locals and find out where the fish are biting. When you get back to the cottage you mosey down to the dock in the backyard just in time to see the Kokomo Cat dive boat pass by on its way out to Looe Key for the first dive of the day. All the divers give a friendly wave as the boat passes by, and it reminds you of just how welcoming this special place is.
What’s next? Do you load up the boat and head to the blue water to catch Dolphin (mahi-mahi), Kings and Sails; or maybe hit the flats in the backcountry for some Bones, Permit or Tarpon? Or should you head out to Looe Key and do some diving or snorkeling on the reef? Better yet, if it’s lobsters season, head out to just about anywhere and catch your limit of this local delicacy. Fresh Florida lobster on the grill for lunch, now that’s a real treat!!
Maybe you have something a little more adventurous in mind and a stay at One Particular Harbour includes unlimited use of two tandem kayaks. So, how about a kayaking tour through the mangrove tunnels of five-mile creek, or paddle out to Tarpon Belly Key to check out the remnants of the old shrimp farm that was once there. And for real excitement, how about an unforgettable, nighttime guided kayak tour of the backcountry, offered only during the monthly full moon. Experience the amazing bioluminescence that makes every paddle stroke a magical swirling emerald green explosion of lights in the water. And before the moon rises, see the full majesty of the Milky Way in the night sky, far away from any Earthly lights.
Then again, maybe you prefer to just take it easy. In that case grab your sunscreen, lawn chair, Buffett CDs, and take your boat or our kayaks out to Picnic Island. Located in the middle of New Found Harbor, the island is only accessible by boat and is just a few hundred yards from the mouth of our canal. With it’s sandy beach, Picnic Island is a very popular spot with locals on the weekends, but is pretty much deserted during the week.
No boat, no problem, just head over to Bahia Honda State Park, a short 10 minutes away, and see why it is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 beaches in America. Or make plans to rent a boat from the nearby Dolphin Marina on Little Torch Key. They can even arrange to have the boat delivered to the house and tied up to the dock awaiting your arrival.
Be sure and save some time during your stay to visit historic Key West. It’s just a short 23-mile drive away, through the most breathtaking, scenic section of the famous overseas highway. In Key West, take the Conch Train tour; visit Ernest Hemingway’s house, and then Mel Fisher’s Museum where they display the remarkable treasures from the Spanish Galleon the Atocha, shipwrecked in 1622.
Have your picture taken at the Southernmost Point, and then head over to famous Duval Street and do the “Duval Crawl” down to Sloppy Joe’s, Margaritaville, the Hog’s Breath Saloon, Captain Tony’s, Schooner Warf, and finally head over to Mallory dock for the nightly sunset celebration.
When you’ve had your fill of the weird, wild, and wacky, leave the tourists, noise, and congestion behind and head back to the peace and tranquility of your secluded tropical sanctuary.
Once you’ve visited Key West, you may also want to check out the restaurants and nightlife a little closer to home. Both the Tiki Bar and Boondocks are fun local hangouts, and feature good food, a full bar, and live music nightly. They are both just up at the end of our street and easy walking distance from the house. The famous No Name Pub is on Big Pine Key, along with several other good restaurants. Mangrove Mamma’s and The Square Grouper are on Cudjo, and for a five star dining experience you can make reservations for a private ferry to take you out to the exclusive Little Palm Island Resort to eat at their award-winning restaurant.

I grew up in the Miami area and moved to New Orleans after graduating college. After 18 years I returned to living Floridays and settled in Sarasota on the Southwest Coast of Florida. A lifetime fan of Jimmy Buffett, I was inspired to buy my own piece of paradise in the unspoiled Lower Keys where I designed and built my own 'One Particular Harbour'. Since then, I have enjoyed sharing this special vacation home with others searching for their own tropical sanctuary.
Owner purchased this Cottage in 1991
Why Owner chose Breezeswept Beach Estates
We looked all over the Keys and on the west coast of Florida before buying this property. What really sold me on the location was the beautiful sunset views. When we built our home there were only about 6 other houses on the street and they all had cistern for drinking water. We had to extend the city waterline down 1/4 mile to our house, which eventually led to the other homes being built on the street.
What makes this Cottage unique
What makes this house so special is the indoor outdoor living. Open all the french doors and enjoy the cool breezes and spectacular sunset views. The location is very private, with the main canal in back, a tropically landscaped lot to the South, and beautiful shallow water bay to the west. You will feel like you are in a secluded tropical sanctuary.

Tropical paradise setting so close to wonders of the sea...
What a great month of June. Nice property with all the things you need to feel at home. Dock was perfext for our skiff (big mangrove snappers), Super tropical setting on the patio and dock. Kitchen had all accessories you need for major cooked meals. Grill was nice and became our area of most Meals. Stereo and tv (tv not on much at all) was nice to have especially for music up and downstairs. John was so easy to work with and very responsive on the whole rental. We slayed the Mahi and Snapper off Ramrod...Just a perfect month!!
Finally Did It All
This was our first time staying 3 months. It turned out to be a good decision. The weather was phenomenal, and the additional time allowed us to finally snorkel Looe Key Reef and try out the kayaks. Because of the weather, we also got to fish more than ever before, and that's a LOT. With all the great eating spots so close we hardly got into Key West this year, but it's nice to know it's there and so convenient. One Particular Harbor has become our home away from home. It's got everything we need, and if there was something that needed attention, the propert manager was right there.
Rick & Cindy Rowett
Oh my where does the time go. We spent the months of February and March at One Particular Harbor. Another two great months. Whitney our property manager was helpful as always. We had a few cold night and windy days due to El Nino, but a lot of fishing was done. The boys had some great time fishing for barracuda, and caught some pretty big ones. Ours friends from Florida were here for a few days, the water was like glass and they had a great time fishing. Bet we see them again next year. Our daughter and her husband flew into Key West. They loved the airport and our first stop was lunch at Bo's Fish Shack (highly recommend this place), then to Duval Street for the Spice Store and the Candy Store (our son in law is a Executive Chef) love these two places. Once again the kayaks were on dry land. One of the years we will find time to try them. The wrap around porch was great for our weekly get together. The views once again over the marsh were beautiful. The Navy Blue Angels were practicing the end of March for their April show. We tried some new places to eat, The Square Grouper Upstairs and Downstairs, outstanding, Fish Restaurant also good and No Name Pub. We also got great fish at the Summerland Fish Market. Yes, and a FEW trips to the Wharf, Boondocks, Looe Key Tiki Bar and Springer's Bar and Grill for great Blue Grass Jam night. Met new neighbors and old neighbors, their names I forget but remember their dogs name. What else to say but a beautiful home, great and helpful owners, can not wait till January, going to try three months. Especially sad to leave when one of the locals hugged me and said see you next year.
Perfect location with perfect sunsets
This is the second time we've enjoyed a month long stay at this property. The location is ideal with all the pleasures of Key West a short drive away .The house is in a very quiet setting with a cozy canal front back deck and unobstructed views of spectacular nightly Florida Keys sunsets out the front porch. For kayakers like us there are fabulous opportunities as close as the back and front yards to say nothing of dozens of nearby putins....Shopping for daily needs like groceries etc is minutes away on Big Pine Key...Pinic Island,Bahia Honda State park,Looe Key are all easy to get to....the house itself is airy and comfortable.....The owner is extremely pleasant and easy to deal with....We loved our visits to "One Particular Harbor" and hope to return again soon...
Ten Days in Paradise
A vacationer is always concerned if the pics/description are really accurate, will we like it. Well......it was better than expected! The house was beautiful with spectacular views/sunsets/risings, well equipped kitchen, magnificent dock for fishing, relaxing, iguana watching/feeding, and boat/kayak/people watching going by. But....the most amazing thing was when a manatee swam over to the dock and let us all pet it!!! John, the owner (wonderful, kind, enthusiastic man to deal with, gave us places to go, eat, and sightsee. We loved "the swim hole," the "blue hole," and kayaking up and down the channel. Neighbors were warm and friendly. All in all, it was one of the best vacations we ever had, and our kids/grandaughter said it was THE best vacation they've ever had. Thanks John, if I hadn't lost my camera in Miami, I'd post pics.
Thank you Cathy and Steve for all your kind words. Perfect Keys Vacation!
Fantastic home! We have rented homes in the Keys in the past and this is the first one we would rent again (and plan to). John and Whitney are wonderful - very helpful with local recommendations. The house is bright, cheerful and comfortable. The neighborhood is laid back and quiet with minimal traffic - perfect for morning walks with the dogs. Oh the sunsets - well, you really have to experience those for yourself!! The outdoor shower was lovely - wash off the salt after a day on the boat. Plenty of room on the wrap around porch for dinner, drinks or just lazing around - chairs are very comfy. We totally enjoyed our month at One Particular Harbor! An excellent place to stay in the Keys!
