Ripple is a newly built, architect designed house brought all the way from the forests of Transylvania! Set on the tidal reach of the River Thames on Eel Pie Island at Twickenham, Ripple combines comfort with style. Roof lights make it light and bright with its high open eaved ceiling, glass gables and spacious living and kitchen area - open the glass doors on to the decking, watch the boats go by and enjoy the pretty landscaped garden. The interior is entirely wood-lined with wooden floors, all beautifully painted and after a busy day sightseeing in London, this is just the place to return to rest and relax.
Ripple has a child safe garden with railings at the waters edge, a BBQ and garden gazebo. Lots of DVDs, toys and books for children and a wonderful playground about 10 minutes walk away. The master bedroom has an en suite shower, wash basin and W.C.; the twin bedroom has 'zip and link' beds so the two single beds can be converted into a queen sized bed if required. Bunk beds (one on top of the other) in the 3rd bedroom are full sized for adults or children. All the beds are ready and made up for your arrival including towels. There is a washer/dryer in the family bathroom (washing powder supplied), walk-in-shower, wash basin and W.C.: soaps and toilet rolls for your arrival. The dining table in the living area seats 8 and the kitchen is well equipped for your cooking requirements with all new appliances: dishwasher (powder supplied)hob, oven, microwave, toaster, fridge/freezer, blender...all brand new! We make sure the cupboards are stocked with basic foods - instant coffee, tea, sugar, oil, salt and pepper - and some fresh food for your arrival. 2 dark grey sofas allow you to relax and watch the flat screen TV in comfort or view the river and birdlife. Free high speed internet access is available, along with a spare laptop and printer.
Eel Pie Island is situated in the middle of the Thames at Twickenham, West London. It was given its name in the 16th century for supplying King Henry VIII with eel pies! It became famous again in the 1960's when various British rock bands, including the Rolling Stones and The Who, performed at a dance hall which has since been demolished. This small, car-free island with its friendly village atmosphere, has approximately 35 dwellings, 3 working boatyards, a rowing club, yacht club, a variety of artists studios and a number of houseboats. Access is via a footbridge from Twickenham and Ripple is 30 yards from the bridge.
Twickenham High Street, with its full range of shops, is 200 yards from the island's footbridge. Explore the narrow, old English lanes along by the river, past the medieval St Mary's Church and the Mary Wallace Theatre owned and run by the Richmond Shakespeare Society. Book yourself a table at the 17th century White Swan Pub where the food and beer are excellent. Within easy walking distance you can reach the famous Twickenham Rugby Stadium, the historic houses of Marble Hill and Ham House and a scenic towpath walk takes you to Richmond-upon -Thames where the Theatre often presents plays before they are shown in London's West End.
Twickenham British Rail Station is an 8 minute walk away and a frequent train service takes you to London Waterloo in 20 minutes. Heathrow Airport is a 25 minute taxi ride and can be reached by public transport. Gatwick Airport can also be easily reached by train. We would be happy to advise you on the details of these journeys. You do not need to hire a car to enjoy this part of west London because travel links are excellent but if you do choose to hire a car there is public carparking along Twickenham riverside opposite Ripple (altogether a 3 minute walk from car to Ripple). There are no designated parking places but there's not a problem with parking and permits are available from us if you need them. Within a 15 minute drive are Hampton Court (Henry VIII's Palace), Richmond Park (Henry's hunting ground), The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, and Sandown Race Course at Esher.
We have had a holiday rental home on the site of Ripple for 19 years- we live a 20 minute drive away- and 5 years ago (2010) completed the building of a brand new Ripple to our design. Our children have grown up with the river and the eccentricities of island life and we love the peace and quiet of this beautiful part of London. We have found that our visitors have enjoyed the added adventure of staying on an island whilst visiting London. And for all those honeymooners... we have now been written about in 'London for Lovers' by Sam Hodges and Sophie Vickers so let Ripple be a special place for you too!

Keywords: Newly Built, Architect-Designed Wood Lined Chalet on Eel Pie Island (Access by Footbridge) on the River Thames in Twickenham
We have two sons aged 24 and 19 and we have spent many happy weekends and holidays on Eel Pie Island while the children were growing up. It was here that they learnt to row and sail and we as a family became part of the island community enjoying raft races, island BBQs and many a pirate party for our children's birthdays. We are both self employed and Ripple has been a peaceful haven for us where we have shared so many happy memories with friends, neighbors and family. Come and be part of the 'Ripple' experience!
Sarah Mumford purchased this chalet in 1996
For 30 years we have lived in west London with a view of the River Thames, and our love of boats and the water led us 18 years ago, to buy 'Ripple', our holiday home on Eel Pie Island, just 20 minutes drive away from where we live. We discovered the island on one of our boating adventures, saw a house for sale, and were captivated by the idea of holidaying in a wooden chalet off shore, in London! We found that crossing the bridge helped transport us to a place of rest and refreshment that was distinctive from our 'mainland' home. Over the years we have kept a variety of boats on our pontoon - sailing, motor, rowing - and have many great memories of boating adventures. Ask our boys how one of our engines came to be on the river bed!!

A good place to come back to at the end of a hectic day of sight-seeing' New Hampshire, USA : 'Wonderful, perfect, lovely, walk across the bridge and you're in a different world! Feels like a home away from home' Seattle: 'We feel so fortunate to have based our first trip to London at Ripple. The sights in the City were fabulous. The trains, tube and buses worked well. But maybe best of all was returning home to Eel Pie Island each evening...' Ontario:'Very much enjoyed the history, heat and heavenly breezes of this hospitable neighborhood' Australia:'We can't wait to come again and will tell all our friends that you can have a relaxing family holiday with 3 children in London!'
The place was really great. Wonderful location, perfect layout, homey/vacation feel. It could not have been any better! And just as the reviews said, there was a plateful of cookies and beautiful flowers. We hope to make it back again, from the US, soon!!!
This place is perfect. Sarah thinks of every detail and is just about the kindest, most helpful person you'll ever meet. My family (husband, 4 year old, my parents) and I stayed here just after the Rugby World Cup and it was incredible. I seriously couldn't have asked for a better experience. We arrived on my birthday and Sarah had a plate of cookies and flowers waiting for me. She even included a candle! As the others say, the fridge is stocked with basics, the cupboards have what you need, and all the utensils and kitchen things are there. The space was super clean and bright and the layout was perfect for our family. When we had to run to the hospital with my 4 year old because of an allergic reaction and miss the play in the city we had tickets to, Sarah got on the phone and figured out a way for us to see the show another day at no extra charge--how cool is that?
We will definitely stay at Ripple again and highly recommend it to anyone we meet. The place itself was one of the highlights of our trip from the states. Thanks, Sarah, you truly are the BEST!
From our initial contact, through to our wonderful 4 day stay, our experience could not have been better. Sarah made us feel very welcome - even a cake for our son who turned 18 when we arrived:) The accomodation & location are of a high standard. It is easy to get around by train and if you want to stay close to Ripple there are plenty of fine food choices for any budget. So quiet and well equipped, we are use to a high standard of accomodation and Ripple did not disappoint. We hope to come back again.
I know this is a little late but feel we must express how wonderful our stay was,Sarah the host was very accomadating and helpful. We would certainly stay again as the position is ideal for people without a car. The station was 8 minutes walk away where you could basically access anywhere in the UK. It was nice and quiet as no cars are on the island, so if you have young children, traffic is not a problem. All in all we had very comfortable stay
See you again Sarah
We spent 2 fantastic weeks in Ripple. A very pleasant holiday house. With perfect and comfortable furniture. With many opportunities for sports and entertainment in immediate surroundings. Can be recommended with a clear conscience.
We couldn't have been made more welcome by Sarah - the owner. The house was well kept, warm and nothing was too much trouble. The house was exactly as reported on the site. I would recommend this to anyone.
