The Garden is a fusion of Japanese-inspired naturalistic landscape and nearly an acre of lush tropical grounds. Blended with the natural surroundings, the garden courtyard features natural moss rock boulders with water gently falling creating a graceful stream flowing into the fishpond with delicate water lilies. The garden uses Japanese asymmetry and placement of boulders, rustic stone lanterns, stone water basins and fountains, bamboo fences and rustic benches.
As owner/manager of Orchid Isle Bungalows in Hilo, Hawaii, I take great pride in offering quality accommodations and hospitality to travelers visiting the Big Island. My husband, David, and I have have lived in Hilo for 40 years where we started our family and raised our three children. We started a real estate and construction business in Hawaii in 1979. The property was acquired in 2003 and my husband and I designed and built the bungalows and landscaped the grounds, taking care to preserve and restore the Japanese gardens and ponds. The gardens continue to be beautified and lovingly cared for. We reside on the property neighboring the bungalows and I greet guests personally to welcome them, handle key exchanges and respond to renters' needs and questions. The bungalows are fully furnished and have all the amenities making this a perfect island 'home away from home'. It is my pleasure to share this amazing property, as an alternative to the 'resort' atmosphere, with travelers and visitors to the Big Island seeking a beautiful vacation retreat where you will not feel like a tourist.

Sherron Skeele purchased this house in 2003
The Orchid Isle Bungalows property was formerly a Japanese garden developed by a Hilo resident, educator and a founding father of bonsai in Hawaii. Dignitaries from Japan visited the gardens and tour buses regularly visited the garden showplace. The gardens and ponds were well-known on the island and several generations of residents fondly recall enjoying the gardens during their childhood. The gardens was one of the first places my husband and I would show our family and friends who came to visit the Big Island. Over the years, the property changed hands and was let go. As we lived on the neighboring property, I took the opportunity to acquire the property in 2003 and began the 'restoration' of the gardens. I made arrangements for the unrepairable existing structure to be burned down by the fire department as a training drill for cadets. My husband and I then embarked on the project of custom-designing and building the bungalows and restoring the existing Japanese gardens. I love to share the gardens and continue with ongoing efforts to beautify and landscape the grounds in keeping with the naturalistic setting that captures the tranquility and beauty of the islands.
My grandson and I were privileged to have enjoyed this comfortable, fully furnished, modern, one-story home away from home for a little over 7 ½ months. It is an upscale, well appointed new home that sits on a knoll at the beginning of a cul-de-sac. The home is beautifully designed and furnished with attention to detail and immaculately clean. The home is in a convenient location for our purposes, a mere 5 to 10 minute ride to schools K-12, the University of Hawaii – Hilo, to major shopping centers, and to medical facilities and services. The home was more than adequately supplied with the basic necessities for modern living. It also provided us with lovely landscaped surroundings to afford us the luxury of time and space for contemplation. Its spacious landscaped grounds offer strolling pathways that beckon one to explore hideaways for peaceful moments. Shoji privacy doors on one side of the home open up to a closed-in, private, open-air patio enhanced by a pond and old growth plantings. Easily accessible and ample parking round out its desirable location in a quiet neighborhood of Hilo. Thank you very much Sherron and David! With much aloha.
We have enjoyed this wonderful bungalow so very much! In our 46 years of marriage and traveling, we have NEVER experienced such a relaxed atmosphere! From the first night when we walked in, I was blown away with how clean and beautiful everything was! VERY well stocked with everything you could posssible need, and then some! We have felt completely relaxed and at home. SO MUCH better than even the best hotel! The Japanese Garden is magnificent with the relaxing sounds of the water features! If I could pack the whole thing up and take it with me, I certainly would! Thank you Sherron and David for sharing this most wonderful home with us! We WILL be back! I would recommend this to everyone! Kathy & Bill from Mississippi
I have stayed in many vacation rentals and have not described one as perfect in the past. This one really was. No detail was missed and it avoided all the major pitfalls of past rentals. Beds were comfortable, kitchen was large and actually had knives that cut, and there were enough supplies for the entire stay. The house, gardens and neighborhood were beautiful and the stay was peaceful and felt private. I love the enclosed lanai and the spa was another bonus. Smooth check in and check out and minimal (that's a good thing) but pleasant interactions with owners. Really can't think of anything to improve. Hope to be back again soon.
I can't say enough about this home. Quality everywhere and meticulously maintained. The pictures don't do it justice. The outdoor living space and gardens were wonderful! The owners have provided everything you could possibly need, and were attentive to our us during our stay. I would rent this again in a heartbeat. An exceptional value.
Our family thoroughly enjoyed this clean, beautiful home. Well supplied and meticulously maintained, this place has everything you need; it is the perfect base for exploring the Big Island. And the gardens are especially peaceful. Thank you David and Sherron!
Our stay at the Garden Bungalow was amazing!
Sherron was at the property finishing up some cleaning and making sure everything was perfect when we arrived. She even put up some of the items she thought may be dangerous for our 18 mo old daughter ;) She was very friendly and gave us a quick tour and rundown about the property and our stay there.
We were there for 10 days and could not have felt more at home in such a clean, well-stocked, well-maintained home! The bedrooms and living areas are very spacious and the patio and screened porch give two nice additional spaces to enjoy the beautiful landscaping!
We will definitely be back! Mahalo 🌴
I stayed at Craftsman Bungalow early June 2016.
Wonderful property. Much more than I required as a single traveler this time, but I enjoyed every minute. The house was immaculate, the kitchen top notch. I particularly enjoyed the screened in porch facing downhill toward the ocean. When the skies were clear you could see the Pacific Ocean and also the Hilo Airport.
Even better was the garden out back. I would like to return with my wife next time because she would enjoy the lush vegetation even more than I did.
Hope to see you sometime in the near future.
Mahalo to Sherron for everything.
