About Sherron Skeele

As owner/manager of Orchid Isle Bungalows in Hilo, Hawaii, I take great pride in offering quality accommodations and hospitality to travelers visiting the Big Island. My husband, David, and I have have lived in Hilo for 40 years where we started our family and raised our three children. We started a real estate and construction business in Hawaii in 1979. The property was acquired in 2003 and my husband and I designed and built the bungalows and landscaped the grounds, taking care to preserve and restore the Japanese gardens and ponds. The gardens continue to be beautified and lovingly cared for. We reside on the property neighboring the bungalows and I greet guests personally to welcome them, handle key exchanges and respond to renters' needs and questions. The bungalows are fully furnished and have all the amenities making this a perfect island 'home away from home'. It is my pleasure to share this amazing property, as an alternative to the 'resort' atmosphere, with travelers and visitors to the Big Island seeking a beautiful vacation retreat where you will not feel like a tourist.

Why Sherron Skeele chose Hilo District

The Orchid Isle Bungalows property was formerly a Japanese garden developed by a Hilo resident, educator and a founding father of bonsai in Hawaii. Dignitaries from Japan visited the gardens and tour buses regularly visited the garden showplace. The gardens and ponds were well-known on the island and several generations of residents fondly recall enjoying the gardens during their childhood. The gardens was one of the first places my husband and I would show our family and friends who came to visit the Big Island. Over the years, the property changed hands and was let go. As we lived on the neighboring property, I took the opportunity to acquire the property in 2003 and began the 'restoration' of the gardens. I made arrangements for the unrepairable existing structure to be burned down by the fire department as a training drill for cadets. My husband and I then embarked on the project of custom-designing and building the bungalows and restoring the existing Japanese gardens. I love to share the gardens and continue with ongoing efforts to beautify and landscape the grounds in keeping with the naturalistic setting that captures the tranquility and beauty of the islands.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My grandson and I were privileged to have enjoyed this comfortable, fully furnished, modern, one-story home away from home for a little over 7 ½ months. It is an upscale, well appointed new home that sits on a knoll at the beginning of a cul-de-sac. The home is beautifully designed and furnished with attention to detail and immaculately clean. The home is in a convenient location for our purposes, a mere 5 to 10 minute ride to schools K-12, the University of Hawaii – Hilo, to major shopping centers, and to medical facilities and services. The home was more than adequately supplied with the basic necessities for modern living. It also provided us with lovely landscaped surroundings to afford us the luxury of time and space for contemplation. Its spacious landscaped grounds offer strolling pathways that beckon one to explore hideaways for peaceful moments. Shoji privacy doors on one side of the home open up to a closed-in, private, open-air patio enhanced by a pond and old growth plantings. Easily accessible and ample parking round out its desirable location in a quiet neighborhood of Hilo. Thank you very much Sherron and David! With much aloha.

THE BEST VACATION EVER!

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed this wonderful bungalow so very much! In our 46 years of marriage and traveling, we have NEVER experienced such a relaxed atmosphere! From the first night when we walked in, I was blown away with how clean and beautiful everything was! VERY well stocked with everything you could posssible need, and then some! We have felt completely relaxed and at home. SO MUCH better than even the best hotel! The Japanese Garden is magnificent with the relaxing sounds of the water features! If I could pack the whole thing up and take it with me, I certainly would! Thank you Sherron and David for sharing this most wonderful home with us! We WILL be back! I would recommend this to everyone! Kathy & Bill from Mississippi

Like staying at a botanical garden

  • 5 of 5

Gorgeous property in excellent location. The landscaping is truly amazing. The home was spacious, clean, and cool, with a screened-in lanai and a well-stocked kitchen. Watch out for mosquitoes outside and enjoy music from the frogs (not an issue when the windows are closed).

Wonderful house and property

  • 5 of 5

The Garden Bungalow is a wonderful property, the owners have done a fantastic job of seeing to your every need. The house is beautiful, excellent craftsmanship, very well stocked with just about everything you would need for a short or extended stay in Hawaii. The house is very easy to get to, and it is close to just about everything in Hilo.

My wife and I very much enjoyed our stay at the house, peaceful, beautiful gardens, very relaxing.

I can only think of one issue, but it is with all home properties in Hawaii, and that is the frog noise at night. If you are a light sleeper you will need ear plugs, they are very loud, and they go all night.

Owner's Response: Aloha Ken and Belinda, Thank you for your great review on our Craftsman Garden Bungalow vacation home in Hilo. We are glad you found the home relaxing and peaceful and enjoyed the gardens. Ear plugs are a good idea if the coqui frog sounds bother you. Some guests actually have the opposite reaction and like the coqui sounds because it helps them sleep. In fact I've been told they make a recording of the sounds to play at home to help them sleep. Hope to see you again for another stay. Mahalo nui loa, Sherron

Absolutely beautiful property with everything you could want.

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at this property which was just as beautiful and welcoming as the first time. I don't know what we could say that others have not already said other than coming back a second time "says it all!" The bungalow has everything including a garage to park out of the rain if you desire but we had two days with no rain. When we are back in Hilo, we will be back here. We got carry out at a little drive-in down the hill called Blaine's, best mac-salad in Hawaii. Thanks and Aloha!

Excellent Unforgettable Amazing Best Ever

  • 5 of 5

We are two couples celebrating our Fiftieth Wedding Anniversaries and had an awesome experience. The furnishings throughout were very comfortable and relaxing and the layout was very user friendly. We had a secure garage with a covered lighted breezeway to the house. Priceless coming in late at night in the rain. Sherron was an excellent host anticipating our every need. We had at our disposal many amenities including an ice chest beach chairs and cold drinks in the fridge. Sherron was also very helpful in advising us on activities to include in our stay and great places to eat. A gracious host. Our only regrets were that we didn't have more time to enjoy the gardens and the patio and screened in lanai. We give the bungalow our highest rating
