About Sherron Skeele

As owner/manager of Orchid Isle Bungalows in Hilo, Hawaii, I take great pride in offering quality accommodations and hospitality to travelers visiting the Big Island. My husband, David, and I have have lived in Hilo for 40 years where we started our family and raised our three children. We started a real estate and construction business in Hawaii in 1979. The property was acquired in 2003 and my husband and I designed and built the bungalows and landscaped the grounds, taking care to preserve and restore the Japanese gardens and ponds. The gardens continue to be beautified and lovingly cared for. We reside on the property neighboring the bungalows and I greet guests personally to welcome them, handle key exchanges and respond to renters' needs and questions. The bungalows are fully furnished and have all the amenities making this a perfect island 'home away from home'. It is my pleasure to share this amazing property, as an alternative to the 'resort' atmosphere, with travelers and visitors to the Big Island seeking a beautiful vacation retreat where you will not feel like a tourist.

Why Sherron Skeele chose Hilo

The Orchid Isle Bungalows property was formerly a Japanese garden developed by a Hilo resident, educator and a founding father of bonsai in Hawaii. Dignitaries from Japan visited the gardens and tour buses regularly visited the garden showplace. The gardens and ponds were well-known on the island and several generations of residents fondly recall enjoying the gardens during their childhood. The gardens was one of the first places my husband and I would show our family and friends who came to visit the Big Island. Over the years, the property changed hands and was let go. As we lived on the neighboring property, I took the opportunity to acquire the property in 2003 and began the 'restoration' of the gardens. I made arrangements for the unrepairable existing structure to be burned down by the fire department as a training drill for cadets. My husband and I then embarked on the project of custom-designing and building the bungalows and restoring the existing Japanese gardens. I love to share the gardens and continue with ongoing efforts to beautify and landscape the grounds in keeping with the naturalistic setting that captures the tranquility and beauty of the islands.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My grandson and I were privileged to have enjoyed this comfortable, fully furnished, modern, one-story home away from home for a little over 7 ½ months. It is an upscale, well appointed new home that sits on a knoll at the beginning of a cul-de-sac. The home is beautifully designed and furnished with attention to detail and immaculately clean. The home is in a convenient location for our purposes, a mere 5 to 10 minute ride to schools K-12, the University of Hawaii – Hilo, to major shopping centers, and to medical facilities and services. The home was more than adequately supplied with the basic necessities for modern living. It also provided us with lovely landscaped surroundings to afford us the luxury of time and space for contemplation. Its spacious landscaped grounds offer strolling pathways that beckon one to explore hideaways for peaceful moments. Shoji privacy doors on one side of the home open up to a closed-in, private, open-air patio enhanced by a pond and old growth plantings. Easily accessible and ample parking round out its desirable location in a quiet neighborhood of Hilo. Thank you very much Sherron and David! With much aloha.

THE BEST VACATION EVER!

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed this wonderful bungalow so very much! In our 46 years of marriage and traveling, we have NEVER experienced such a relaxed atmosphere! From the first night when we walked in, I was blown away with how clean and beautiful everything was! VERY well stocked with everything you could posssible need, and then some! We have felt completely relaxed and at home. SO MUCH better than even the best hotel! The Japanese Garden is magnificent with the relaxing sounds of the water features! If I could pack the whole thing up and take it with me, I certainly would! Thank you Sherron and David for sharing this most wonderful home with us! We WILL be back! I would recommend this to everyone! Kathy & Bill from Mississippi

Truly a stay in a beautiful home in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Being greeted by Sherron and shown all the amenities within this beautiful house was the beginning of the most wonderful three weeks of our whole year! This home and the surrounding gardens are immaculate, gorgeous, and show the "aloha" that Sherron and David have put into the upkeep of this lovely property. I enjoy cooking, and the kitchen had everything I could possibly need for our homemade meals. It was so relaxing to sit outside in the gardens reading and listening to the water rush over the rocks of the little waterfall. I even enjoyed the sound of the coqui frogs lulling me to sleep each night. If this bothers some people, a sound machine is at the bedside which is just an example of the thought that went into furnishing this home. I appreciated the bathrobes hanging in the good size closet. Really, Sherron and David thought of everything! And, downtown Hilo is just a short drive away. This location is GREAT! Mahalo for helping two tired innkeepers relax and get reenergized to travel back to the mainland to continue their small bed and breakfast business.

Great Location in Hilo

  • 5 of 5

The house was conveniently located for day trips we took on the West side of the island which included Volcano National Park, Hawaii Tropical Gardens and Kapoho Tide Pools. The house was spotless and had everything we needed for our stay. Sherron was a gracious hostess and answered our questions in a timely manner. We enjoyed our stay in Hilo and had a lot of fun exploring the island. We recommend this house and would stay there again.

Exceeded our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this place is outstanding; from the beautiful garden paths, to the emmaculate interior, we felt very comfortable and pampered! The kitchen and linen closets are well-stocked so we never felt like anything was missing. Sherron was there to meet us at check-in to go over everything, and she was always available by text to offer restaurant or local sights suggestions. Would love to stay here again someday! :)

Nicely constructed house

  • 4 of 5

The house is very well constructed. I didn't realize it was essentially part of a compound that includes the owners house and an apartment above the garage. We didn't have any issues while we were there from a privacy perspective, but we do usually try to rent houses that are a little more private.

This house sits on the corner of the main road and the neighborhood road. There was some road noise from the main road, but it wasn't terrible.

Be aware that there is no air conditioning in the house. While the vast majority of the time that isn't a problem in Hawaii, it is if you want to shut the windows to block out the coqui frogs (and road noise). The frogs are really loud. It's truly a love/hate thing. Half of our party hated them and found it hard to sleep, I had no trouble.

The hot tub is on the back porch of the owners house and is a short walk from the bungalow. It is not really part of the rental per say but is available for use. The sauna was out of commission while we were there.

The gardens are by far the best part of the rental. They are extensive and beautiful and provide a lovely, relaxing stroll right outside the back door.

The hosts are courteous and besides one minor snafu on arrival, easy to communicate with.

Owner's Response: Aloha Heather, Mahalo for your family's stay at our Craftsman Garden Bungalow, for giving our property a high rating and for appreciating the home's quality craftsmanship and gardens. Designing and constructing the house and developing the gardens was a labor of love and we are truly happy to be able to share the property with others. Issues raised in your review did not seem to be a problem for you personally, but more of a heads up to future travelers, so I have added my own comments below. #1 Privacy. The vacation rental home has adequate privacy for most people. A detailed, accurate description of the property is provided on HomeAway/VRBO so there are no surprises after arriving. The property is 1.5 acres of gardens with 2 rentals. The Craftsman Garden Bungalow is a 2 bed, 2 bath home on the ground level, connected by a covered walkway to an enclosed garage with the 1 bed, 1 bath Zen Bamboo Bungalow upstairs over the garage. The owners, Sherron and David, have a home on the neighboring property, which is accessed via a path through the garden. The upstairs bungalow is currently rented long-term by a quiet, single professional who works in Hilo and travels frequently on business. #2 Road Noise. The property is on the corner of 2 neighborhood streets - a 2-lane feeder street through the subdivision, and a short side street with a cul-de-sac. The driveway to the house is on the side street. There is some road noise on the feeder street during the week when people drive to work in the morning and return home in the late afternoon. Insulated windows and trees along the perimeter of the property help to reduce any noise. #3 No A/C. The bungalow has ceiling fans in all rooms, additional portable fans, ocean breezes, a shaded screened-in lanai, and outdoor courtyard to stay cool during the summer months. #4 Coqui Frogs. Coqui frogs are on the Big Island. Many guests like their chirping, bird-like sounds at night which helps them sleep. We do habitat modification to help control the number of frogs on our property and insulated windows help to reduce any noise. #5 Spa. The spa is located outdoors in the garden lanai set behind owner's house. Guests reserve the spa for private use. No additional charge. #6 Arrival. Owner meets guests for check-in after 4pm. Guests provide estimated arrival time, and call when close to arriving. Any questions? Please email or call Sherron. ~Mahalo
