About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

This charming home in the heart of Asheville recalls the elegance of bygone days. The ground floor has a full 1250 square feet of private space, including 2 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room with sleeper sofa, and a large, fully equipped kitchen and dining area.

Green Gables of Asheville, restored by the Interior Designer/Owner, features high coffered ceilings and original period details throughout. Each of the two large bedrooms has its own wood-burning fireplace and seating area. The living room, furnished with the comfortable elegance of 1920's period antiques, features a third fireplace and a large flat screen with high definition cable TV and DVD player. There are beautiful antique chandeliers, ceiling fans, and restored heart-of-pine wood floors throughout.

The large second bathroom (en-suite master bath) features twin lavatories, a shower, and a deep soaking tub in a separate alcove with an antique stained glass window and candle sconces on the tumbled-travertine walls. The porcelain floor tiles are heated. Plug cell phones and computers directly into special wall outlets for recharging.

Green Gables is CLOSE TO EVERYTHING – so take a break from sightseeing or shopping to relax on the huge wrap around porch. Sit in the romantic swing that overlooks the gardens or dine al fresco, and watch the dozens of birds that frequent the bird feeders all day long. The porch is the place to gather on balmy summer evenings to watch the moon rise and to soak up the relaxing, candlelight atmosphere.

Maps and activity guides are provided to help you plan your days and evenings. The home is provided with every convenience – soaps, shampoo and luxury towels, cable TV and CD player (IPod ready), lots of board games, entertainment libraries, wireless high-speed internet, unlimited long distance telephone, a fully equipped gourmet kitchen with outdoor gas grill, cribs and high chair for babies, and luxurious linens and pillow-top mattresses that promise a restful night’s sleep.

The famous BILTMORE ESTATE is only four minutes away, and Asheville’s restaurants, coffee houses, museums, art galleries, and live entertainment are even closer. Shoppers will love the boutiques and the charming, eclectic shops. Many antique stores and warehouses are located less than 10 minutes away – an antique hunter’s paradise with bargains galore. You can walk (15 minutes) to a great organic grocery store. The area is also great for sports enthusiasts. It's a 15-minute walk to one of the best clay tennis courts in the US and a 10-minute drive to the nearest golf course. Great biking - level bike paths near the house (including Biltmore Estate bike paths), and hilly terrain in town and on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is even a skateboard park within walking distance.

A 7 minute walk brings you to the River Arts District with sidewalk cafes and more than 135 artists’ studios, where some of the best art in America is produced. Other nearby activities include spas, YWCA (10 minute walk), live music & dancing (17 minute walk), yoga (including Bikram Yoga), farmers markets, and University of North Carolina activities – and much, much more. This elegant and luxurious vacation homestay is a place to experience a romantic getaway that you will remember always.

Green Gables is pet friendly and child friendly. Well-behaved dogs will be considered (pet fee applies.) There is a large fenced dog park nearby. The veranda and front yard are fenced and gated for the security of small children and pets. Low-rise beds are available for small children, as well as cribs, high chair, and baby bath. The elegant and luxurious designer fabrics are all washable, pillows and cushions are slip-covered. The sturdy antique furniture has been selected to withstand use. Excellent facilities for day care and summer camp programs are located nearby.

Please note that there is a 5-night minimum stay for all major holidays.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time at Green Gables! Finding accommodation for a 10-month-old & two dogs isn't easy, and this was a perfect spot close to downtown, the Biltmore, and the NC Arboretum. Thanks again!

Georgia was very helpful and the accommodations were as pictured or better. Her home is very comfortable, clean, and close to the Biltmore.

Beautiful and charming AVL home

  • 4 of 5

The home was beautiful and in a very convenient location. We had everything we needed and our host was lovely. We stayed Thursday-Sunday and enjoyed each day. There were 4 of us and we slept comfortably but you do have to share rooms so be aware if you’re a single sleeper.

Amazing place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Green Gables is a beautiful property and Georgia (the owner) has thought of everything to make guests comfortable. Enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of coffee on the spacious and inviting front porch.

The house is convenient to downtown Asheville and Biltmore Village and it's a quick Uber ride away if you don't want to struggle to find parking (which can be a challenge.)

Could not be more PERFECT

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I got married in Asheville and stayed here. When we walked in on the first day, I almost cried because the house was so much better than I imagined. The pictures are great, but it doesn't capture the full character and openness of the home. It was perfect for having my bridesmaids over the day of our wedding to get ready. We were never cramped, we had plenty of space, and everyone was in awe of the whole house. We also brought our dogs and taking them outside was so easy as everything was fenced off, even with chicken wire under the fence so our littlest pup couldn't get under it. The porch is so wonderful and cozy to sip wine or coffee. And the yard...what an immaculate setup, beautifully manicured lawn and flowers. You can tell a lot of work goes into the upkeep. Our stay was completely private and wonderful. I really could go on and on, but the last thing I'll say is that the kitchen is so well stocked. I did a lot of cooking and absolutely every utensil, pot/pan, cutting board, potato masher, etc. were available to use. I felt right at home and I never wanted to leave. This home will be in our memories of the most perfect weekend we've ever had.

The nicest property in a transitional area

  • 4 of 5

The house and grounds are as pictured - clean, functionally furnished, but not luxe and certainly not typical of the environs. The surrounding houses are in various stages of disrepair and some are abandoned. We did not feel comfortable walking in the neighborhood after dark or early in the morning, which we disappointed not to do as its location is close to most places of interest. The offstreet parking is nice but a bit challenging exiting.

Georgia has attended to many thoughtful details to provide a pleasant stay. We have not stayed in an owner occupied VRBO before, but were aware of Georgia's presence upstairs - nothing loud but footsteps, floor creaks, etc..

Owner's Response: Your review of this property and neighborhood presents a completely inaccurate picture. There are no abandoned houses. As you pointed out, this location is close to most places of interest. Because Green Gables is walking distance to downtown, the River Arts District, the South Slope Brewery District and only 1.7 miles from the Biltmore Estate entrance, the real estate prices have more than tripled in the past two years. Many people have taken advantage of the sellers market and sold their homes. These houses have not been abandoned nor are they in disrepair. They are being renovated. But I do get your point when you speak of this being a “transitional” area. The information you are conveying is that not all of the original residents have moved away. Asheville's beautiful new Middle School is just up the street. I'm saddened that you would feel uncomfortable seeing 12 to14 year old racially diverse children walking to school in the morning. The rest of the day and into the evening, the pedestrian-friendly avenue is filled with people walking their dogs, jogging, riding mountain bikes, pushing strollers. I walk almost daily with other women and their kids, and none of us ever feel uncomfortable. This is a close knit neighborhood. I know everyone who lives here, long-time residents as well as newcomers. We all love this area and are thankful that we have found such a vibrant, culturally diverse place to live. Regarding your other comments, the entrance to the parking lot behind the house is 12 feet wide and should not be challenging. The furnishings are beautiful and comfortable antiques in keeping with the 1920's style of the impeccably restored period architecture. The construction is solid and heavy, preventing the transmission of voices and other sounds, though the floor may transmit the occasional creak. There is no connection at all between Green Gables and my small upstairs apartment. Guests have total privacy in the 1,300 sq. ft. first floor with the 650 sq. ft. wrap-around veranda.

Look no further for a place to stay in Asheville!

Georgia's home is fabulous! Spotless, cozy and so comfortable. The beautiful veranda is a plus. A book containing all the places to visit with maps is very helpful. Great location in a quiet neighborhood. You'll love it!
