South Haven House Rental Photos and Description

The Beach House -- 3 Bedrooms, sleeps 8, 2 baths, low bluff - AWESOME BEACH!!!

Cozy year-round cottage sits on low bluff overlooking 70’ of private Lake Michigan beach. Stairs from deck lead to sea grass, sugar sand, and shallow water with sandbars. Great place for sand castles during the day and bonfires in the evening. Built in 1910 and recently updated, the original arts and crafts interior includes wooden ceiling beams and hardwood floors. Three bedrooms (two upstairs; one downstairs) sleep 8 comfortably. Wide front porch overlooks lake and deck .

Amenities: Fully-equipped kitchen (remodeled 2011) includes electric range, double oven, dishwaher, soapstone countertops and floor tile. Separate dining area seats 8-10 comfortably. Sitting area has Cable/TV/ DVD, stereo CD/cassette player, and docking station for iPod/iPad. House provides unlimited local phone calls and WiFi Internet access. AC provides comfort in the summer, but don’t miss out on the great cross-breezes from the Lake. Linens provided, along with kitchen equipment, lawn chairs, beach toys, games, videos, and many, many books for all ages. Bring your own beach towels!

Things to do!: Large shaded back yard (70’x150’) provides lots of space for games and seating area for family and friends. Shed is stocked with beach toys and lawn chairs. Take a ¾ mile walk south from the house along the beach to look at the South Haven light house or people watch on North Beach. Head north from the house along the beach to look for sea glass and view steep Lake Michigan Bluffs. Walk or bike across Dyckman bridge and into town (1.25 mile). Shop at local art galleries, food shops, and antique stores in town, or take a 15 minute drive to Saugatuck/Douglas area for more shops and restaurants. Visit one of the local vineyards, and De Grandchamps’ blueberry farm. Pick seasonal fruits in surrounding area. Play golf at public or private courses. Charter a fishing boat or sail with Friends Goodwill--a 3-masted schooner and historic replica. The water sport shop on Dyckman offers a good selection of sports rentals, from paddle boards and jet skis to kite boards and kayaks.

Great location!: South Haven is about 2.5 hours from Chicago and 2.5 hours from Southeast Michigan. It’s a great place to meet up for families scattered across the Northern Midwest. Nightlife includes fireflies and shooting stars, bonfires and ghost stories. Good pubs and restaurants also available in downtown South Haven, or close by in Saugatuck, Douglas, and Holland. List of recommended pubs and eateries available in welcome book at house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Cynthia, had a great time at the beach. Most of us got into the water some, and a few went swimming. The weather held off for our activities and the temp was great. Took the Kal Haven trail to Grand Junction for lunch on Friday- nice bike ride. We enjoyed the private beach, the large front yard and the environment of a 100+ year old beach house.

Perfect weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 7 greatly enjoyed our stay. Despite this being a smaller house, I would say it would accommodate one more comfortably. The house has much charm and is quite unique vs the other houses being built/updated in the area. The major selling point is of course the private beach. Having a late night fire in front of the black background of Lake Michigan is one of those experiences you will never forget. I can't wait to do that again!

Owner's Response: Nice to hear from you! The lake is ever present at our cottage. It's the first thing I look for in the morning, and the last thing I hear when heading off to bed. The darkness of the lake at night is an awesome experience. I hope some day you also get to see the moon set over the lake--very eerie and very beautiful -- but you have to get up early to see this!

Wonderful Lakefront Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The location and view directly on Lake Michigan, with a private stretch of beach, plus the house itself, make this a great getaway. Loved the restored cottage/home and all the modern updates. Kitchen is fantastic, as we cooked a ton while we were there. Fully equiped, plus two grills. Wonderful view just relaxing on the deck and watching the waves. Easy, short trip down to the water any time. Comfortably fit 2 adults and 2 kids, clean, original. Highly recommend.

A Classic Lake Michigan Beach House

  • 5 of 5

I would highly recommend this property! From the moment we arrived we felt right at home. The kitchen has everything you need, utensils, dishes, pots and pans. So well stocked! Bathrooms are beautiful, plenty of nice towels, comfy beds with soft sheets. Everything was spotless when we arrived. The covered porch is a gem, perect place to enjoy the amazing view of the lake and sunsets. Gas grill and more seating on the lower deck make cooking so much fun! Access to the beach is great for rock hunting along the shore or a refreshing swim in Lake Michigan. The owner emailed very helpful information before our arrival and graciously answered all of my questions. Its obvious this charming home is treasured, it has been beautifully maintained. South Haven has great local shops and restaurants as well as Wal Mart if needed. This property exceeded my expectations and was a vacation we will always remember!

Huge Disappointment!

  • 1 of 5

Don't be fooled by the existing reviews! Upon arriving at the house we found it filthy, dilapidated, and bug and mice infested. The outside of the house was covered in spider nests/eggs and various other bugs. We understand that it is near the lake but spider nests should be cleared- which we had to do to ourselves to make the porch usable. Bugs were also all over in the house. The landscaping around the house is very overgrown which may explain the bug issue. Upon arrival the inside of the house was filthy. Floors were full of dirt, interior window sills full of spider webs and dead bugs, and dressers/cabinets had dirt and sticky residue on them. The upstairs bedrooms and bathroom had paint chipping off and peeling away. We called regarding the filthy floors and the cleaning service came promptly to clean, however the floors still had such a layer of dirt that our 10 month old daughter was covered in black dirt from crawling on the floors. The furniture in the house is old and the couches, while appearing clean (don't lift the cushions!) are worn and reminiscent of a college frat house. On our second day we saw a mouse near the kitchen and found that it had been eating through bread on the countertop. The next morning, after we cleared the kitchen counters of all food, we found mouse droppings all over the countertops and our belongings. At that point, with a 10 month old and 3 year old we decided to cut our week long vacation short after just 3 nights in this house. The owner did reimburse us for the remaining nights, although at a lower weekday rate (not at the weekly contract amount divided by nights stayed), and had the audacity to charge us a $100 late departure fee as we were 45 minutes late from leaving at the 6pm "agreed" upon departure time. Obviously she has never had to explain to a 3 year old that his vacation is over since the rental house isn't safe/clean or tried to pack up two small children. In addition, while the listing does show the square footage of the house, it would be a miraculous feat to see 8 adults live and sleep comfortably in this house. Lastly, as Lake Michigan water levels have increased this year, the "beach" is only about 6 feet wide.

If you are looking for a "roughing it" type of experience this house may be for you. However for the rental cost there are much nicer, cleaner, larger properties available with the same waterfront location for a similar or even lesser cost. Do your homework or you may be disappointed!

Beautiful home with awesome views and beachfront

  • 5 of 5

The house is amazing - although we didn't spend much time "in" it. The porch is spacious, and the deck provides a peaceful view of the lake and lighthouse, and the beach is small but functional. (We were in the water most of the time, anyway). The town of South Haven is adorable and offers anything we could possibly need - with a Meijer and WalMart right in town, we had convenience and solace right at our fingertips. Our week was delightful - even with a couple of thunderstorms with 70+ MPH winds. We would definitely consider returning to this property for another week of escape.

Owner's Response: We look forward to welcoming you back! 70 MPH winds? You had the Edmund Fitzgerald experience! The storms on the lake have a lot to do with the amount of beach available as the water roils and crashes into the shore. Fortunately, the beach always comes back :) Did you see the kite-boarders after the storm? Those crazy, athletic men and women who ride the waves and winds up and down the coast are one of my favorite things about South Haven! Thanks so much for writing!

Notes:
Please bring your own beach towels - washer/dryer provided. Beach chairs are stocked at beginning of the season -- they have a way of appearing/disappearing so best to bring some folding beach chairs just in case. There are usually kids sand toys in the shed, however these too have a way of appearing and disappearing so come prepared! There is a nice store called Outpost Sports at the corner of Dyckman and North Shore Drive that has beach gear, beachwear and all manner of water toy rentals. It's an easy 4 block walk.
