When Christopher bought the site of Carraigin Castle, his friends and family panicked at the idea of his attempting to restore what looked like a shapeless heap of stones. Even the builder who undertook to have a go at putting the place together thought he was 'cracked'. Chris had grown up near a ruined castle, and it had been his childhood dream to restore one. He was, therefore, quite determined to go ahead with the project. By doing a lot of research into medieval hall houses and visiting nearly every castle in Ireland, Chris lovingly designed every corner and corbel of the building, including the roof and the original door latches. I am particularly fond of the down-stairs front door. It took Christopher 7 years (!) to design it and collect the materials – hand-forged nails, oak planks etc. Finally he took one whole month off to build it, and although I am his wife and I say so myself, the result is quite delightful. In spite of its authentic medieval appearance, Carraigin is as warm and comfortable as any modern holiday home.
Annemarie purchased this Castle in 1969
Why Annemarie chose Headford
Chris had grown up near a ruined castle on the other side of the lake. After a long search all across the West of Ireland he found (and fell) for the ruin.
What makes this Castle unique
We come for the fishing, fabulous walks, fireside chats and peace and quiet aplenty. There's a boat to rent, with outboard, life jackets, fishing rods and an introduction to Lough Corrib by a local fisherman.

Breathtaking! Perfect for a family reunion!
We had 8 adults and the size of the castle was perfect. The two younger couples took the downstairs and the other couples were upstairs. We loved the window seats and the breathtaking views. Tina catered a fabulous dinner for my husband's birthday. The castle was exactly what I wanted for our vacation experience.
A Different Kind of Place.
This is a different type of place. Beautiful views coupled with a unique interior setting. The beds are comfortable and the place has the feel of a relaxed Cape Cod beach rental coupled with a Game of Thrones cosplay theme. The bathrooms are starting to show their 30 year age, but it works overall. This place will work for two families with tween children looking for a place to stay and explore the area. Geraldine, the caretaker was great. We rented off season, but if you get a sunny day in mid-summer, the view over Lough Corrib may want you to never leave.
A magical experience
The castle and the grounds were nothing short of magnificent. The lake, the swans, the beautiful, magical forest and the quietness were an experience you may not get anywhere else. Close to Ashford Castle for horseback, and a host of other outdoor activities and a 20 minute drive into Galway for any bus tour you desire or a bit of city life. Cong is a wonderful village to visit and grab a bite to eat. Hirely recommend if this is the experience you want.
An unforgettable experience
Even more stunning than advertised. There was plenty of space for six adults and four small children. While we used the the castle as a base for touring from the Burren to Connemara, we were also happy to just spend time at the castle fishing, boating and hiking. Rain seldom intruded on our fun. An unforgettable experience for all of us, thanks to Geraldine, Tina and Dave, and a well restored 13th century castle.
One of a kind experience
We have stayed in the castle for 4 days with our two kids and loved it so much we didn't want to leave.
It is a truly unique property in a peaceful and secluded location. It looks like a movie set from the outside and doesn't disappoint on the inside. If you are looking to get away from it all and enjoy some peace and quiet in a majestic setting, this is it. When you finally decide to leave the walls of the castle for the outside world, most of the Western Ireland attractions are relatively short drive away.
We were lucky with the weather and took full advantage of the boat while staying at Carraigin. Special thanks to David for showing us the way around the lake.
Highly recommend using catering services from Tina. The food was delicious and leftovers lasted us several days.
Owners respond quickly to any communication and Geraldine made check-in and check-out process a breeze.
Overall, we highly recommend this property. It is one stay you will never forget!
13th century castle that makes for an amazing home base while touring all around Galway and Mayo. Perfect size for two families (4 adults and 6 teen age kids). Being on Lake Corrib with its stunning views, swans, and neighboring sheep and cows was a true treat.
