Great Times at the Gray Barn
The Gray Barn was perfect for our needs. Beautiful sunsets, wonderful, refreshing breezes. This was our first time staying at Southwest Harbor and Jonathan was a great host who made sure we felt welcome.
Spacious house in a great location
We stayed for four nights in October during peak foliage season in Acadia. The park is beautiful this time of the year but unfortunately it's also past the busy season, meaning many of the restaurants in the area (particularly Southwest Harbor) are closed. Tip: call the restaurants you want to visit. Google often showed that they were open when they were closed for the season.
Even though we didn't get to explore Southwest Harbor, the Gray Barn was still in a great location (30 minute drive to the town of Bar Harbor, 25 minute drive to Acadia Cadillac Mountain Entrance). The Barn is a separate house next to Jonathan's residence. It provided privacy while the owner was close enough should we need to reach him. Jonathan greeted us upon arrival and gave us a tour of the property. He was very helpful with recommendations and was very responsive to all our needs.
The ground floor contains a storage room that is off limits. The second floor is the main area which includes a spacious kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom, and full bath. The third floor has a large bedroom. It could easily accommodate 4-6 people. The Barn was stocked with some essentials although we ran out of paper towels and there wasn't body soap. Otherwise the Barn provided us with everything we needed and we cooked one of the most amazing lobster boils for dinner on our last evening. The Barn was clean for the most part but we encountered a large amount of black flies. Jonathan was very apologetic and assured us that this has never happened before. The view looking over the water was amazing and there's a family of deer that would often graze on the property.
Overall I had a great stay and Jonathan was a wonderful host.
Charming place on quiet part of the island.
The Gray Barn is a great apartment for a couple of small family trying to get away. The view is terrific and on the right side to enjoy sunsets every night by the water. Living area is spacious, with everything you need for a short or extended stay. We were there eight nights, and had the most relaxing, enjoyable stay imaginable.
The host Jonathan is very accommodating and provided an abundance of information about the area to help us enjoy our stay. He also offered use of his kayaks to use in the harbor next to the apartment. We were able to enjoy them multiple times during our stay when the tide is right.
The only real down side to the actual apartment was the very small bathroom. This was not a big problem for my husband and I, but may cause an issue with a larger group. There is no cable, but there is wifi making it possible to watch streaming programs on your own devices. Having a washer and dryer was a HUGE perk, as was the outdoor grill.
Bass Harbor is close to many great Acadia hikes on the quiet side. We did several with beautiful vistas. They are shorter hikes, but you usually can combine a few to extend your day.
It is a 30 minute drive to Bass Harbor. This was not a problem for us, as we are up early and out the door before roads and trails are busy. This may be a problem for those that choose to sleep in or come during the busy season. The crowds were light in mid to late September. Southwest Harbor, which is a town we drove through daily to get anywhere we needed to go, was busy. We heard from the local shop keeper that at certain times of the year it can become very backed up on the one road through town. It also was the only town we witnessed a speed trap by the local officers.
Highly recommend spending a week in this area getting to really enjoy the nature and pace of the lifestyle. The Gray Barn is a perfect home base to use while you explore.
Great space - friendly owner - beautiful nature
The pictures didn't do justice to how nice the space was. We were 4 adults and 2 children comfortable accommodated.
The owner lives next door, very nice, and very helpful with any questions or issues.
Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park should need no introduction - it is a beautiful spot. The barn is next to the water, and taking the kayaks into the marsh or playing around in the tidal currents with the kids was great fun.
The barn is on the southwest side of the Island - a quieter part than the northeast Bar Harbor part, but you need a car anyway and nothing is really far away.
Close to Nirvana
It would be difficult to find a better spot for spending a vacation than the Quietside of Mt. Desert, and the Gray Barn experience is part of the fun. The accomodations are modern and in great shape, and the windows both have a great view over upper Bass Harbor and give great air circulation. Access to cellphone and internet coverage is a convenience. The kitchen is very functional, though you'll want to visit the lobster pounds and restaurants in the area. A perfect base for hiking in Acadia National Park. The week we were there was perfect for using the owner's kayaks in the upper harbor and the estuary beyond. We've stayed three different years and will be happy to return.
Comfy get-away on the quiet side of the island
Our family of 4 had a wonderful time while staying at the Gray Barn. Took about a half hour to get to many attractions on the Bar Harbor side of Acadia, but it was nice to come "home" to relax away from the crowds. And there's plenty to do in and near Bass Harbor, too--Acadia mountain, Echo Lake, Thurston's Lobster Pound, boat tours, ferry, quick access to a lobster pier to buy your own (cheap) lobster to cook. The Gray Barn is on a small, residential road, set back a bit from the main road, with a direct view of the harbor and short walk down to the water. It was very clean and well-kept, with all the amenities of home, including a nicely stocked pantry of basic cooking supplies and paper products. The sunroom/dining room was bright and breezy with view of the harbor. Beds were comfy, there was plenty of room on the living room and sunroom couches to stretch out, and having a washer and dryer on site was handy. The kayaks were a bonus--we enjoyed exploring the harbor or nearby marsh. And the raspberries growing on the property were a treat. The owner was really friendly and helpful in orienting us to the island when we arrived, and provided maps and brochures to use while we were there. He recommended a tasty, authentic Mexican restaurant (XYZ) in town and told us about a great swimming spot on Echo Lake ("the ledges") that our kids really enjoyed. If we make it back to Acadia Nat'l Park, we'd stay there again for sure. Would highly recommend the property.
