I am a graduate of SIU and now the proud owner of the Alto Wine Trail Loft.
Brian Stone purchased this cabin in 2010
I have chosen this location because it is in the Heart of The Wine Trail & Shawnee National Forest. It is also a short drive to Southern Illinois University, Giant City, Cedar Lake, Alto Vineyards, Trails End Lodge, Hedman Orchard and Vineyard, Broken Wheel Ranch, Gity Stables, Rustle Hill Vineyard.

A few friends and I stayed at the back loft for a bachelorette weekend to explore the Shawnee Wine Trail. The loft exceeded our expectations. It had all the amenities we needed. It was clean and comfortable. The area was very quiet and ideal for those who appreciate and enjoy nature. We visited in the summer, so it was super nice having AC. I wish I would have brought my hiking shoes because there is a trail very close to the cabin. The owner was easy to contact and helped us with an questions that popped up during our before, during, and after our stay.
Very cute, well stocked, and clean. Great place to stay on the shawnee wine trail. Only downfall was the WiFi didn't really work.
We had a group of 4 families rent both the front and back lofts. The beds & baths were very clean and comfortable, the kitchens well-stocked with pans, plates, bowls and glassware - great because we cooked most of our meals on site. The town and playground offered some space for the kids to run around, but since it rained most of our stay, the checkers/chess games were most appreciated. We checked out the Von Jakob winery/brewery and hiked through Giant City State Park. If the weather weren't so rainy we would have loved swimming at Cedar Lake. The only disappointment was with the owners of the Root Beer Saloon, who apparently just close the place for weeks or months at a time -- so don't count on it to be open. The place next door, though, has some excellent whiskey fudge.
Five to fifteen minutes from four different vineyards, a brewery, some of the most breathtaking views in Illinois, hiking trails, orchards, and Bald Knob Cross, not to mention, 20 minutes from the mighty Mississippi, the loft is a hidden treasure. The outside matches the quaint surroundings of Alto Pass, but the inside is very metro chic. The overall vibe is relaxing and airy. If you are looking for a high end, luxury stay, the loft is not for you. However, if you are looking to unplug, unwind, and immerse yourself in the local fair, I highly recommend Brian's Alto Pass Loft!
We loved the feel of this property and the fun design elements the owner incorporated into it. We will be staying here again sometime in the future.
We also took advantage of a deal which offered a free night with two paid nights. This sealed the deal for us.
The owner was very easy to communicate with and fun to talk to as he shares his love of the area and offers good suggestions for places to enjoy during your visit.
We had two families of 4, so we rented both units. They are basically identical, excepts the back unit has a private patio, which was so nice for drinking coffee in the morning, or wine at night. The loft is within walking distance of a trail that leads you to a beautiful overlook. The trail is easy for those who just want to experience nature, but you can also do a little easy climb to the overlook. The Alto Vineyard is a few miles away, and is so wonderful. On Mother's Day, we sat outside, listened to live music, let the 4 year old run around with other kids while we enjoyed wine, bread and oil, and cheese and crackers. We couldn't have had a better experience there. The Root Beer Saloon is across the street from the loft and had delicious ice cream and root beer floats. This was the most quaint little town, and a truly relaxing weekend for Mother's Day. All of us, from age 4 to 68, loved it. Brian is very accommodating and friendly. We will definitely be back!!!
