Located in Chessels Court, this spacious and comfortable mansion apartment is steeped in history. Built in 1760 by Archibald Chessil and now Grade A listed, this Georgian flat has many fine period features including unique decorative plasterwork and cornicing. With a chequered past, it has been at times a refuge for policemen and the playroom for the next door nursery. The mansion block has many associations, from James Boswell and Deacon Brodie to the colourful Bloody Mary’s Close!
Situated in the heart of the Old Town, Edinburgh’s renowned centre, it is a perfect location from which to explore all the city has to offer. Only a short walk to both Holyrood Palace and Edinburgh Castle and within easy walking distance of the main train station and the express bus to the airport.
The Royal Mile contains an excellent range of small specialist shops, grocers and a wealth of traditional and modern bars, bistros and restaurants, all within easy reach of the property.
The ground floor flat comprises: main door to curved entrance hall, large and sunny lounge/dining room, modern breakfasting kitchen, large double bedroom with en suite shower room, large double bedroom plus extra single bed, separate bathroom with over bath shower. The rates include hot water, electricity, central heating, towels, linen and taxes.
This beautiful apartment is ideal holiday accommodation for Edinburgh’s festivals, New Year, Hogmanay or Christmas stays in Edinburgh.
Please note - The building work on the site is behind the apartment was complete at the end of July 2016 and is now landscaped too.

Fabulous place and a great location.
It's so convenient for seeing the city when on a short stay.
This is a difficult review to write. Five Chessels Court is a lovely apartment with a great location. It is the type of apartment we love to be based in while exploring a city. BUT - and this is big BUT - the reason I considerthe apartment terrible and would not recommend it is that it is located next to a huge construction project which makes it almost uninhabitable during daytime work hours. Every weekday of our 16 day stay, between about 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM (and halfdays on Saturdays), there was construction noise going on around us, including the driving of piles into the earth and trucks moving metal pipes around the site.
What was as bad as the noise itself was the fact that we were not told by Great Base, the rental agency, about the construction in advance of our stay. I happened to find out about the construction going on shortly before we left the U.S. by reading another renter's online complaint regarding her own awful stay about a month before our own stay.
It was dishonest on the part of Great Base not to tell us in advance about the construction and the consequent noise. This is not a small construction project but a huge one.
It's a shame becuase the apartment is actually quite nice with atmosphere and charm and what I call a "sense of place". It's located in a courtyard with many of the buildings dating from the mid-18th century (including the apartment itself). It has its own entrance so you feel as if you're living in a private home rather than an apartment. It's spacious and well furnished. It has a washing machine but, unfortunately, no clothes dryer or dishwasher. It's also located steps from an excellent Turkish restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, and half a dozen pubs. Many other restaurants and cafes are all within a 5 to 10 minute walk away.
In short, it's exactly the kind of place we like to live in when away from home. If it weren't for the construction, I'd recommend this in a heartbeat. With the construction going (and we suspect that it will be for some time) I wouldn't stay here if it were offered to me free of charge. Once the construction is finished, I'd probably give this apartment a good to excellent rating, but not for the foreseeable future.
We loved our stay here and the sun shone, thank you!
This is a historic spacious apartment in the heart of the old city. Edinburgh was at our doorstep and everything 'Ald Reekie' offers. Loads of restaurants and bars nearby and everything we came for within comfortable walking distance. After a days of exploration what a pleasure to return to this sanctuary of historical substance.
The property is full of character and history but is fully equipped with all 'mod cons', fully functional kitchen if you like to cook? Flat screen TVs, wifi, did not need the heating system however I have no doubt it is like the rest of the apartment everything working and well maintained.
Lived-in, but clean, comfortable and appropriately furnished with some nice period furniture, it felt like we were staying in a home and found very little not to like about it.
There is adjacent building work but it didn't bother us. We always carry ear-plugs for exactly that sort of thing, but not needed (normal construction hours). The bonus is a spectacular view from the living room and second bedroom which would not have been seen for decades if not hundreds of years?
A big thanks to the landlord for this gem; over 55's can travel by train anywhere in Scotland for £19 return? Waverly Station is about a five minute walk and the trains are modern and comfortable. We went to Kyle of Lochalsh via Inverness, upwards of £160 for £38, bargain!
We will be coming back to Scotland and we will check availability so we can stay again.
Really neat place, love it!
p.s. check out the Circus Bistro (1 min) a great place to watch the world go by, good food and drink, well priced (all day menu) frequented by locals.
We were so pleased with our flat ... it met every expectation. The large living area is a lovely place to gather, yet the bedrooms are separated which makes the flat perfect for two couples. The location in a close off the Royal Mile is ideal for sightseeing. There's a bus stop quite close, and many places to eat/drink. Katie was most helpful. The close is even on a 'hidden gardens of the Royal Mile' tour ... and they are a delight to the eye. Spacious, charming, clean, well supplied, and lots of extras ... this is a highly recommended abode to enjoy in Edinburgh.
We selected this location because it was convenient and appeared to meet our needs. We would stay here again because it was WONDERFUL! The apartment was extremely comfortable and cozy and the owner was very helpful getting us settled. The pictures don't convey how big the rooms are in the apartment. Thank you!
We came for the Fringe festival in late August and had a great week using this beautiful apartment as our base. As we cooked most of our meals, we especially appreciated the well stocked kitchen. We plan to return.
This apartment is just off the Royal Mile in the Old Town of Edinburgh and not far from the Castle or the Palace of Holyrood.
