Named for the creek that flows beside it, Laurel Creek Cottage is a wonderful retreat beneath the High Knob of Roan Mountain. Located half way between Bakersville, NC and the Appalachian Trail at Carver's Gap, it is a beautiful drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Our area is known for the Rhododendron Gardens atop Roan Mountain and for the many Christmas tree farms, as Mitchell County is the Home of the Perfect Christmas Tree. Our communities have great public areas for swimming, fishing, jogging, tennis and bicycling. These creek side and river side parks are pristine and relaxing. Other area activities include tubing, kayaking, gem mining, studio tours for local artists, museums and entertaining evenings at local restaurants and gathering spots.
As hosts to our visiting guests, we strive to make your trip enjoyable and comfortable. Our master suite is a soothing place with a king bed, cathedral ceilings and skylights. The double door access to the creek side deck invites one to explore the outdoors and the nearby waterfalls. Laurel Creek is a native stream. The sound of the rushing water has been a lullaby for many of our guests.
Our guest room has a double bed with a single bed bunk above. Another full bath is right next to the guest room and deck access, just steps away.
The cottage has all the conveniences of home. Linens and towels are provided. The living room adjoins the kitchen and dining area, and there is a 'mud room' entrance for those snowy days.
Asheville's Biltmore Estate is a leisurely drive of just over an hour. The slopes of Boone and Banner Elk are within an hour's drive. Our area is conveniently located near other exciting adventures. Packages are available as well.

Thanks for letting us enjoy your wonderful cottage. You have a beautiful piece of property. Enjoyed the hike to the Waterfall. Happy New Year!
My fiancee and I planned our vacation to the North Carolina mountain area around the multiple motorcycle routes available. This vacation home fit the bill almost perfectly. The only reason I say that is the driveway is a little awkward getting into with the motorcycles, the homeowners had no objection to us pulling in wide in their driveway to make the parking more accessible though. Overall the area and the stay was gorgeous.
I hope this review helps you to make the decision process a little easier. First off, we were looking for a getaway from the distractions of our normal week with 4 teenagers. We hit the nail on the head staying at this cottage, and in this area. I started with a verbose review and it cut me off, so here is the abridged version:
Renters: Awesome communication! Jo Ann helped us with suggestions to great eateries, local stores and info. She even provided her personal number which we had to use to confirm directions on the trip up and she was happy to help!
Cottage: Clean, comfortable and cozy; exactly as described. Master Suite is the best, and we didn't use any other part of the cottage. Deck is secluded and the creek is the number one amenity. We left the back door open at night, fell asleep to the sound of rushing water and the view of stars through the skylight. Was perfect! Had a deer in the front yard on Saturday night when we returned. Wen't hiking up the creek and took about a thousand pics. Just beautiful. Note: Cottage does have Wi-Fi which we used sparingly. AT&T does NOT get Cellular Service in Bakersville but DOES in Spruce Pines. This was perfect for us because we truly wanted a a get a way trip.
Area/Town: Helen's restaurant was so good, we ate their twice. Highly recommended. I wish we had more time to explore Bakersville, it was very charming. The river going through the town has an awesome walkway that is lit with quaint street lamps. Can't wait to go back. the drive to and from the small town was breathtaking. Christmas Tree fields, majestic mountains and farm houses. Dollar General was very convenient for any missing items. Spruce Pine has more commercial stuff and is about 20-30 minutes away.
Key Items that Would Make Us Return:
- Creek, sounds and beauty
- Bakersville Community/Area
- Distance from Our Home
This is a nice little cottage with a great backyard area. The weather was a little colder than normal but still enjoyed the rushing creek and serenity. Had a fire in the fire pit. Would be nice to have the door open at night and listen to the creek but it was too cold during our stay. It was very clean and nice property owners. Had trouble finding the office with no sign but we would recommend this little cottage. No internet connection but that was okay for us to get away from technology for a few days.
We had a great time staying in this cottage. The creek is a major selling point!! It was unreal how close it was to the house and how soothing it was! We loved the location as it was close to everything but yet not right in town. The owners house is right there in front of you which does kind of take away from the feeling of "getting away from it all" but I must say that they were friendly and did not bother us at all. It was not something that would prevent me from returning! Thanks!
Easy to find and beautiful setting along a rushing creek. Close (6 miles) to the quaint little town of Bakersville where they have wonderful walking trail along another beautiful creek. Also close (8 miles) to the Summit of Roan Mountain where you can walk on the Appalachian trail and about an 75 minute drive to Asheville for enjoying the Biltmore estates and other interesting sites along the way. The house itself is adequate with full Frig. and two burner love along with oven and microwave and has a large deck with gas Bar-b-que. The house does have a bit of a musty smell (especially when you first arrive) but after a few days being there that seemed to get better. Overall we really enjoyed our 16 day stay there and would certainly stay there again.
Easy to find just north of Bakersville towards Roan Mtn. We stopped at Ingles Market in Spruce Pine on the way up to gather our food and wine (of course) to make our meals. Note that the stovetop only has 2 coil burners, So if your used to making bigger meals it will take a little planning. It worked out ok for just us 2.
The back deck is private facing the creek which is where we spent most of our time especially at night where we lit a fire in the portable pit after cooking some rib eyes and asparagus. We drank wine under the stars by firelight.
The cabin was overall cleaner than others we had stayed, but we always wash our sheets before we sleep anyway.
We drove up to Roan High Knob for some hiking and had dinner 1 night at the Mountain View near Little Switzerland.
The owners were easy to work with and to communicate with.
