Wow! Where to begin? First of all the Bahamas are beautiful (my first time there) and pristine, with Mathew's beach being one of the best examples! The view from his cottage is unreal! Exqusite landscaping, lush and tropical leads to a breath taking beach with awesome snorkling! The sound of the surf gently puts you to sleep and relaxes you all day!! Then there is the Island itself, it is beautiful and friendly! Driving the golf cart along the narrow streets was just a blast! We ate at several great resturants and enjoyed the local favorites, cinnamon rolls and farm fresh eggs! But hands down the best part of the trip was Mathew himself! We rented a boat, (which we moored at his morage) and at his advice visited the most spectacular sights,. He told us the best of everything, where to snorkle where to have cocktails where to swim where to just hang ect...his knowledge of the whole Bahamas was priceless! Bonus, no mosquitos!!
My wife and I recently spent a month in the Atlantic Cottage. It was a very private setting in a tropical paradise of gardens. Man-O-War is not an island for everyone. It is off the beaten path where life is simpler and less complicated. You need to be prepared to entertain yourself with pass-times that do not involve TV, radio or newspapers. The cottage does have wifi and a telephone. All these comments aside, we had a magical time on the island, making new friends and exploring the island. While the owners were away from the island during our stay, Matthew and the care takers were available by phone or email. The cottage is very clean. Often we were the only people on the beach. The cottage is also very close to the Eastern Harbour which is interesting to watch, and is a good swimming pool. The property also has a deep water dock. The caretakers thoughtfully picked us up and dropped us off at the ferry dock on our arrival and departure. You know you are going to be off the beaten path when you take a big plane, a little plane and a boat to get there. Although the cottage has two bedrooms with queen beds, it might be close quarters for four adults for any length of time. It is perfect for a couple. Absolutely 5 Stars.
I just finished a two week stay at Atlantic Cottage on MOW. From the caretaker picking me up at the ferry and taking me for a grocery run to my departure it was a wonderful place to rest and relax . The ocean is about 150 yards off in a nice view from a bedroom and deck. A short walk and you are on a really nice sand beach that goes about a quarter mile and it is very lightly used. The water was wonderful too. A very simple place that offered me the opportunity to rest and recuperate from a hip replacement(8 weeks) and to get back my strength. The island is a nice place to walk around and meet folks -both islanders and american homeowners. Its not a resort with a lot of noise though that is in fairly close reach in Hopetown. Its a place where one can get off and relax and the only traffic is the occasional golf cart. And the owners are nice too but you have your privacy.
We stayed at the cottage a few weeks ago for about ten days with three children who can't stop raving about the experience.
The owners are delightful and always offering to help make the stay even more enjoyable.
The cottage is charming, well equipped and very well located. A short walk to the beach and the ocean one way, a short walk to the bay and the dock the other way.
The island is beautiful, very quiet and ultra safe for anyone with children. There is not much going on as far as shops and restaurants on Man-O-War but it was exactly what we were looking for. Marsh Harbour is a quick boat ride away if needed :)
We cannot wait to go back, hopefully next year.
What a delightful two weeks! We are already making plans for a longer visit next year. This is such a beautiful and peaceful retreat. All you hear are the sounds of the ocean, the lovely song birds, and the wind through the palms. The grounds are exquisite with exotic plants, shrubs, and trees. Everywhere you look there are picture perfect scenes and such privacy. The owners went out of their way to make this a memorable experience for us. There are also the extras here that we have not seen on previous stays on MOW. These important extras include washer/dryer, wifi, TV, transportation to and from the airport, and trips were even offered for provisioning/sightseeing. The cottage is beautifully made with extremely comfortable and lovely furnishings. Everything you need is right on site. The owners live near by and were close if you needed them. But they were always most respectful of our privacy. Man O War Cay is known for its friendliness, good food, shopping, and water activities. Staying at the Janes's "Atlantic Cottage" makes everything so easy and accessible. A perfect vacation destination! We plan on returning to this lovely cottage every year.
Man-O-War was a randomly selected destination that turned out to be the best Christmas/New Year’s treat for our family. Our host extraordinaire, Matthew Janes, guaranteed that we would leave with unforgettable memories. For a random pick, this was a bull’s eye!
Gracious hospitality is an understatement. Matthew met us at the northern airport, Treasure Cay, since we couldn't get a flight into MHH. After buying all our provisions at Maxwells (a great grocery store) we loaded everything into his boat for the short ride to Man-O-War. It was late and the stars were beautiful. He dropped us off at Dock N Dine for dinner and while we ate, he took all our bags and groceries to the cottage then came to get us in the golf cart which we were given use of for the rest of our stay. The cottage is simple but lovely and very comfortable. The construction of the buildings is noteworthy -- Man-O-War is noted for boatbuilding and it is evident in the construction details in the cottage and the home Matthew built. Although the appliances are a bit rustic, we managed wonderfully. We especially enjoyed the rum punches Matthew taught us to make...mmmm!
Waking in the morning to the sight and sound of the ocean was a far cry from a California city!! The settlement is just a short walk, which actually seems longer by golf cart. The little carts darting down Queen's Hwy (just wide enough for 2 to pass) were surreal. We learned quickly that everyone waves as you pass. Opening a "tab" at the grocery store, which we settled when we left using a stateside check, was very convenient –“just tell them you’re staying at the Janes’s.” You will need cash for Lola’s homemade bread and cinnamon rolls – it’s a treat just to go to her house to buy them.
Highlights included the "low end" of the island - low tide was super and so much to see in the water; Christmas dinner at the Abaco Inn; afternoon tea with some of Matthew’s friends; cocktails at Faith’s – a very special lady; scuba diving off the reefs and finding the wreck of the USS Adirondack; renting a power boat and visiting some remote spots; and New Years in Hope Town (wild time, fireworks and the traditional Junkanoo!)
Matthew has been on the island for over 30 years and is a wealth of knowledge and talents – a very skillful sailor, builder, architect, landscaper, and intellect. I doubt this trip would have been as successful or filled with adventure were it not for Matthew.
