40 Acres, Unique House, Views, Spa, Pets OK, Sauna, Pond, Fishing, and Canoe,

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,000 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 10-12)

This spacious home sits on 40 private acres in the center of the scenic Keweenaw Peninsula, yet is only a half mile from US-41. The South Portage Entry Lighthouse at Lake Superior is within a mile. This is the most scenic and snowy area of Michigan and abounds with trails, parks and waterways. The historic twin cities of Houghton-Hancock are 12 miles away with two colleges, shops, museums, galleries, restaurants, microbreweries and a waterfront Chutes and Ladders park. The Ojibway Casino is 15 minutes south.

The house interior is charming and retains the character of the old farm house while thoroughly modernized. Classic old cabinet and room doors were retained as were some hardwood floors. Custom wood paneling is throughout the house including a cedar bathroom, a knotty pine front porch, and a master bedroom with rich black ash paneling. View stars or northern lights out the skylight over the bed. There is a fine sound system with upstairs and downstairs speakers that can be used with the TV or your ipod/phone. Guests love all the special qualities of the house, the great views, the abundant wildlife, and the central location.

There are three bedrooms (two queens beds, one double), two family rooms, a sunroom with an oversized jetted spa tub, an insulated porch with a single bed, and two full baths, one with a shower and the other with a claw foot tub. There is a washer dryer in the basement. Outdoors there is a large deck on the house and at the pond. Indoor amenities include a fireplace, premium satellite TV, stereo, DVD, dishwasher, games, puzzles, and quite a library for all ages.

The large windows upstairs and down offer ten-mile sunset vistas of the Keweenaw Ridge with almost no human development in sight. Walk in privacy through the fields or on the marked trail loop. Wildlife watching out the big windows can be great, lots of deer, recently some turkeys and large sandhill cranes walking through the fields. Raptors, herons, geese and ducks cruise over and visit the pond. Listen for owls at night. Winter is a special time since we average 20 feet of snow annually. Nearby are snowmobile trails and Alpine and Nordic skiing. Snowshoes, sleds, and sledding hills are provided.

A large spring-fed pond wraps around a small peninsula, canoe and lifejackets are provided. Catch and release smallmouth bass fishing. A fine place for kids to catch their first fish. Near the pond is a shaded picnic area. Have a campfire there and maybe you'll get lucky with the northern lights (hint, stay up late). It's possible to sweat with a sunset view over the pond out the full glass door of the triangular wood-fired sauna.

Minimum Stay: The minimum stay is two nights, except during July and August when there is a one-week minimum stay. I will make exceptions to the summer minimum if the place happens to be open near the dates you want.

Open all four seasons, fall colors are amazing. Hunting is allowed on the property with my permission. There are 200 blueberry plants, wild strawberries in abundance, pears, raspberries, blackberries, and apples. Strawberry and blueberry U-pick farms are within walking distance down the quiet county road.

Guest Comments:

We just arrived home from our vacation and wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed your property. Everything was perfect. We found ourselves having difficulty leaving the farm for other activities. The dogs tried to convince us to stay forever, but they had to settle for an opportunity to someday return. Going to bed with a blanket of stars overhead and waking up to deer grazing in the backyard are luxuries not experienced in Cleveland. Lisa P.

We were able to watch a bobcat saunter through your back field one evening and several eagles around the pond in the mornings. D.H.

Just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at your Keweenaw home. Watching the deer in the morning from the deck and then watching for shooting stars at night was big fun. The weather was near perfect all the while we were there so we were able to enjoy the great outdoors.

Just dropping you an e-mail to thank you for letting us stay at your place in the Keweenaw. We had a great time, even though it was pretty hot that week. We had some pretty good meals at the Pilgrim River Restaurant in Chassell and the Harbor Haus in Copper Harbor. Also, with the warm weather we went swimming in Lake Superior a couple of times. Staying at your place was very relaxing and private. Enjoyed the pond, all the stars at night and a few good thunderstorms. Thanks, again. M.K.

Everything was good, LOTS OF SNOW!!!! D.E.

Just a quick note to let you know we very much enjoyed the home and property. We especially liked sitting on the deck, canoeing and 'playing' in the pond, and your skylight over the bed. We also appreciated the fact that we only did need to bring food to make the visit complete. Your cleaning and grounds-person do a great job! Our dogs have never had the chance to roam a large parcel or play in water and they didn't want to leave. As we were packing the car, one actually started walking down the driveway and refused to come back! D. P.

We really enjoyed staying at your house. It is so pretty to watch the sun set over the hills. I enjoyed walking your trails and the peace and quiet. The stars are so bright at night. I'm glad that we were able to rent it for a few days. I wish we could have stayed longer. B.B.

We did have a great time. We loved the farm and the house. Very peaceful and great views in every direction. The stars through the skylight over the bed were a real highlight.

The house was in great shape and everything worked fine. My wife loved the claw-foot bath tub upstairs and she said you should mention it on your web site.

The deer loved the apples from the trees in the backyard. Every evening at the same time they would come by to munch on some. That was a nice treat.

We had a great time, enjoyed the pond, canoe, fire pit (every night we had a little bonfire and our twins had a ball), and the house was great, too. A.Z.

Just wanted to let you know we had a fantastic time at your home. It was absolutely beautiful there with the views. The house was fabulous and only took a very short time for us to feel right at home. Thanks for everything and we hope we can return next year. It was probably our best trip to the U.P. S.N.

We had a wonderful time at the house! It's so great. The house has such a comfortable feel that we really had a relaxing vacation (just what we needed). Can't think of any suggestions, everything was perfect! Thanks again, Y.B.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I received my returned deposit today, thanks for that, when are you going to be taking bookings for next year, I would like to make another reservation. I meant to write as soon as we got back but time seems to have got away from me. I wanted to let you know that we had the best time at Keweenaw, loved every moment and could have stayed forever. I also want to compliment you on the condition and cleanliness of the house, everything there was top notch and I was amazed and impressed by all the books, games, kitchen appliances, extra bedding etc, You’ve done a fabulous job, we couldn't have asked for more. My daughter told me she’d only leave if I promised her we’d come back next year, that’s quite a compliment seeing as she’s 17 and tries to hang out with us as little as possible  The wildlife we saw there was awesome, a porcupine, deer (of course), hawks, eagles, bats, I’m sure I’m forgetting something but you get the idea. I truly thank you for allowing us to bring our dogs, they thought they’d died and gone to heaven, they kind of smelled that way too by the end of the week but nothing a bath couldn't fix. Thanks for everything and I hope to hear from you soon as we can’t wait to return.

Private! Large! Clean! Fun!

  • 5 of 5

We had a terrific 4 night stay recently. We went with 4 adults, a two year old, and a Labradoodle.

There was plenty of snow for outdoor activities, but if indoors relaxing is your thing, there is ample space and comfort in this home. There are plenty of photos on the website, but in my opinion they do not do this home justice. Two large tables at opposite ends of the home, the spa room, and extra porch with couch and twin bed in it, along with the "tv" room upstairs, which is really another huge quiet area to enjoy, added to the space available to "lose" yourself on your vacation.

The views are awesome from every window. The spa room is really large and the tub itself is bigger than it looks in the photos. Each room has everything you need for a very comfortable stay. The owner was available and personable, to communicate with when we had a question.

I would love to revisit this property in the summer, it is very secluded and quite lovely.

Don't hesitate to book this property, the area and surrounding towns are a lot of fun too!

Don't miss Ambassador's in Houghton for pizza, KC Bonker's for coffee and interesting toys, and From the Past Antiques, both in Hancock. Enjoy!!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Laurie for your detailed and positive review!! I'm always happy when people are pleased with the accommodation. I try to do a good job communicating and urge folks to ask any questions about the place before or during their stay. Thanks especially for telling people about great places in town to visit. It really is a fun area. Thanks again! Greg

Had a great time, nice house.

  • 4 of 5

Father son trip. Had a fun time. The sleeping capacity is kind of over stated. Only other issue is it is not a ride in ride out snowmobile location. Trails in area are not maintained and there is no legal access to the trails from the house. Had to run 41 for a short time to get to town. Got turned around on the power line access to trails by homeowner after we asked. Ended up trailering to Houghton which isn't bad. Wondered around looking for parking. Police told us to park at fairgrounds which was a great spot.

Owner's Response: I state that the house will sleep ten although there are not ten beds. However there are five queen beds, three in bedrooms in addition to a sofa sleeper and an air bed. There is also a single bed and other sofas. Please understand the difficulty of accurately coming up with the number of people the house will sleep because it will depend on the number of couples or children that sleep two to a bed. The house is quite spacious and there is room to spread out for a larger group. I'm sorry that you assumed you could directly ride to the snowmobile trails and were disappointed that you couldn't. Potential Guests - Please feel free to ask me any questions about the location, house, etc. before you book so that you are not disappointed. I am very responsive and will truthfully answer any of your questions. I would much rather lose a booking than have an unhappy guest. Thanks for your business David, I'm happy that you enjoyed most of your trip!

Great spot for a Copper Country Stay

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in the Copper Country/ Keewenaw. The property was clean, well kept and as described. The directions to find it were spot on. Although we spent most of our time out and about, there were plenty of magazines, books and puzzles to occupy time if the weather was poor. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils, flatware and eating ware. We enjoyed the heat from the wood stove as well.

Owner's Response: Thanks Brian! All the puzzles, games and books are from the 20+ years myself and my family (son and daughter) spent there. So - something for everyone if the weather gets bad. Ditto with the kitchen, lots of accumulated necessities and more. The woodstove is a nice Jotul with a glass front. I heated the whole house with it when I lived there but now the gas furnace does the hard work.

Exactly as advertised. Very private. Would like to return in the summer sometime.

Much better experience than a hotel on lodge. Private and somewhat secluded. Older home had a few minor issues but too be expected. Would definitely do again!

Perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the house. We snow shoed on the well marked trail in the back woods every day and made excellent use of the sauna (I am actually going through sauna withdrawal). The house was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The kitchen is a dream to cook in. We ate meals around the table staring out at the lovely view of the woods. We read books and played games every night by the fire. It was a perfect family holiday. We ventured out for nordic skiing, dog sledding, groceries and more books in Houghton but we were mostly happy to settle in and enjoy everything this place had to offer. I really hope to come back some day.

WINTER - Snowshoes are available and so are sleds! Please call me for details. We have 15 feet + of snow every year! I forgot to mention the wood stove/fireplace... Area: Houghton - Hancock is the home of Michigan Technological University and only 12 miles away. It's a town of about 15,000 with lots of charm, shopping and activities. Copper Harbor or the Porcupine Mountains are a little more than an hour’s drive away. There are also lots of local ski hills, hiking trails, water activities, snowmobile trails, cross country ski trails and lots more.
