David Ritter is a retired coach, teacher, principal and superintendent who has worked in 14 different school districts throughout Ohio during his 48 year career. He graduated from Huron High School, Wilmington College, Xavier University and also attended Ohio University and The Ohio State University. Having found himself with an empty nest and a small log cabin nearby, he decided to begin renting out his family home, 12 years ago. The home that brought him so much enjoyment throughout the years, he now shares with and welcomes vacationers from all walks of life!
Dave purchased this house in 1985
My family of 10 adults and 9 children spent our Thanksgiving holiday here at the Buster Brown House in 2013 and again in 2015. The house is very comfortable for everyone with plenty to keep the kids busy and hiding places for the adults who come to enjoy the lake view. The children love Imagination Station in Toledo ( an hours drive) one afternoon and the Holiday Light Show opens at Sawmill Creek Resort on Friday so we get to start the Christmas season with a great light show. Although the kitchen is a bit small, we managed turkey with all the fixings and took advantage of the huge dining room table for a family feast. Thanks Dave...a great time had by all!
We held our Family Reunion at the enchanting "Buster Brown House," on Rye Beach, Huron, OH, July 4-11, 2015.
Everything about this home, nearby activities, relaxing, good old fashion family fun, was wonderful! The beautiful & large bedrooms each, were unique and restored to it's original charm.
Hardwood floors everywhere! Two staircases leading to a landing, taking you to the upstairs. I don't know who loved checking out the rooms more, the happy children or impressed adults!
This sits on pristine land, flowing down to a special gazebo, overlooking Lake Erie.
Our families took turns at cooking meals for all and sitting at the large rectangle wood table! The sun room was my favorite! The children loved the ping pong table on the wrap around porch.
This home is so interesting, with many pictures of the "Buster Brown Antics" which we adults found fascinating!
Dave Ritter, the owner, was outstanding! Very accommodating and within few minutes he was there for any questions, repairs, which were minor. Very impressive!
Everyone.....loved our stay!
Walking down to the beach and playground was a real treat, especially to the children!
We were fortunate to be there on the 4th of July and I believe, Dave's Son, put on quite a display!!! You could also view the fireworks on Cedar Point!!!
Our excursions took us to Cedar Point, Put-in-Bay, an indoor water park on a rainy day, and fun & hilarious drive through safari, all within couple miles from Rye Beach!
This was definitely one of our most favorite Reunions!!!
I cannot recommend it highly enough!!! Plenty of parking, games for children, Dave thought of everything!
Five stars for a large home from the past!!! Forever memories!
Thank you Dave Ritter!
This is house is a wonderful place for a large family gathering. Even with 14 people in the house you don't feel crowded. There are enough common rooms on the first floor that kids can be playing ping pong on the porch and adults can enjoy the quiet in the sun room watching the lake. The bedrooms are large and the kitchen is well equipped. The house is clean and obviously well cared for.
This house would be great for a family reunion, plenty of activities in the area for all ages. This would be a place we would stay at again.
My family, consisting of 12 adults and 5 children, rented the Buster Brown Shoe House for a weekend to celebrate my mother's 60th birthday. The house looks as depicted in the photographs online and was spacious enough for all of us to enjoy time together as well as find space to enjoy moments of quiet apart. The house was very clean and was well stocked with extra towels and linens. There were also two air mattresses on the property that we used. We enjoyed eating meals together, sitting around the fireplace, playing pool, and playing ping pong in the heated wrap around porch. We did not venture outside as it was the middle of winter but the view of the lake from the back sun room was gorgeous. I can imagine that in the warmer months, it is even more beautiful. The 6 rooms were all spacious and well appointed (there are 4 bedrooms on the second level and 2 bedrooms on the 3rd level). The radiator heaters kept the bedrooms warm at night. Water pressure in the bathrooms was excellent. Water temperature varied for some of the guests on the 2nd level bathroom but I believe this was due to the dishwasher running at the same time.
The kitchen was well stocked with kitchen items and it worked out fine, but it was small given the large size of the rest of the house; only a few people could be in there at a time. The house also sits on a very narrow street, with other properties directly across the street, which isn't immediately clear in the photographs. Despite this, there was plenty of parking space for all of our vehicles. 2 cars fit in the garage, 2 in the driveway, and 2 along the street.
Patrons with small children should bring a few baby gates to keep young children off of steep steps inside. The only thing I would change about the living room steps, is to add an additional rail along the wall to assist coming down the steps, particularly while carrying small children or for guests of advanced age.
Dave, the owner, was a gracious host and very easy to work with. He attended to and fixed a jammed porch door in a very timely fashion and was staying in a property close by and available by cell phone.
I would certainly stay at this home again at any time of the year. The rate was excellent in the off season.
Great house for a long weekend. The kitchen is fully loaded with items for cooking. Plenty of firewood for the fireplace. Dave was very easy to work with and responded quickly. We saw 6 eagles in a tree down the shoreline to the West.
To be an older house, the owner has done a great job updating it and keeping it clean. We had 12 adults and plenty of room. You don't need to bring anything extra he has it all. I'm trying to find one complaint; we baked cookies and the cookie sheet was not large enough. Oh dear.....that's it. Very friendly owner, great experience. Thank you.
