We have been coming to the area for several years and have always enjoyed the small town atmosphere. We looked for over a year for the perfect place to build our vacation home. We love the closeness to the beach as well as the privacy of the woods. We love the fact that you can have just as much fun staying at the house all week but if you want to go out or have a nice dinner Saugatuck is a short drive away.
What we enjoy most is the peacefulness of the house. The views of the woods are very relaxing and we love walking along the lakeshore or going to the beach.
Just returned from a weeks stay. It flew by. Home was clean and well appointed. Awesome location with small walk to beach or several great beaches 2 miles down the road. Plenty of room for a family of five, including a poor sick kid who spent most of her time in bed. Beds were cozy, tons of towels, concrete floors were easy to sweep up from endless sand from all our excursions.
Great wooded location. Restful gazing at birds, squirrels and deer from the deck. Daughter hung a hammock in the woods and sketched for hours. Limitless hot water, well stocked kitchen. We enjoyed watching the olympics, playing wii and streaming music on the sound system. Wifi strong and consistent. Hot tub was welcome after long hikes in the dunes. A/C and fans kept us comfortable.
Private location, but neighbors friendly. I imagine this location would be awesome in any season. Wish we had a home here.
Owner was responsive and friendly.
Our family of 4 kids and 2 adults and dog thoroughly enjoyed our week at Butternut Pines! The house itself and everything in it was very comfortable and high quality. Mattresses (very important!) and linens outstanding. Beautiful view of forest from literally every window in the house. Love the open main floor. Even when working in the (very nice) kitchen, you could enjoy the view. Saw deer several times in woods off back patio. Great outdoor shower for getting sand off. Hot tub very nice. Loved how you can open up the main floor to the screened porch to make it one big space....very cool! We loved that when you were at the house you felt secluded and serene surrounded by the beautiful pines but you could quickly walk around the corner to a fabulous Lakeshore drive for a scenic walk or down 50 stairs to a beautiful beach for swimming/walking. We enjoyed many sunsets there. Just down the road by car is a small but nice beach (5 min. drive) with 10 parking spots. 2 minutes farther and you get a fabulous county park with a great beach. Free ample parking there, 2 bathroom facilities, nice playground, lots of green space, and a very nice stairway and full ramp for beach access. We also drove 20 minutes away to Holland for a fun bike ride and then play at Tunnel Park beach which is an all-sand beach with a long shallow (thus warmer) lake floor before the it drops deeper...perfect for kids. Saugatuck is a great in-town excursion. Go shopping and then order a fried chicken bucket dinner from the Southerner to take home for the beach/sunset. Loved the cinnamon/sticky rolls at Pumpernickels. And always a visit to Cranes for pie.
We've stayed at 3 different houses in the area over the years and I always do a ton of research, but next time Butternut Pines will be my first choice before going anywhere else. This house was very well thought out for a great vacation experience when it was built and has been maintained well. When I had to contact the owner with a question, he was very kind and helpful and made himself available if any other questions came up. I would love to come in the other seasons; I imagine fall or winter views from the house would be amazing. Thanks Butternut Pines for a truly wonderful vacation!
We stayed at Bob's cabin for a week and, while we found the house spacious, beautiful, and modern, the house was not in as good a condition as we had expected given how much we were paying.
As two academic couples looking for a nice quiet place for a writing retreat, the location was perfect. It's surrounded by trees which give you a nice feeling of being secluded. Douglas and Saugatuck are just a 10-15 minute drive away. The cabin is nicely equipped with TV, grill, video games, and other sources of entertainment if you want to stay in.
That said, when we arrived the bedrooms and bathrooms were very clean but the rest of the house wasn't. The dining table had a sticky syrup on it, the coffee table, side tables, and mantles were dirty, the rug by the porch had not been vacuumed, the couches were full of dog hair and had stains on the back, the jacuzzi had sand in it, the screened porch was unswept, and the kitchen counters and floors were dirty. Worst of all, the last tenants had left an overflowing mountain of trash by the curb that wasn't picked up until a couple of days into our stay leaving us to deal with a trashcan full of maggots. We were pretty bummed to have to spend the first hours of our vacation cleaning the house.
We did reach out to Bob with our concerns and ultimately requested a partial refund, due to the conditions of the house, which did in fact limit our use of its facilites (we really didn't spend any time in the screen porch nor did we use the hot tub due to cleanliness issues). Bob did accept to give us a refund, although for only half of the amount we initially requested and a fraction of the amount we paid for our overall stay.
We had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend at Butternut Pines. The house is perfect, clean, modern and had everything we needed. We loved the privacy and the incredible views through all the windows... trees trees everywhere. The only thing we had trouble with was finding the private beach area but after reading the manual provided it was fairly straight forward and we enjoyed long sunset walks on the beach. We will definitely be back!
Everything about this place is to help you stay in and relax. I especially appreciated the comfortable beds, well-stocked kitchen and sleek design that made cooking and sitting by the fireplace enjoyable and stress-free. My guests had ample opportunities to chose from: antique shopping, hot tubbing, beach walking, nearby hiking and Salt of the Earth if they got really hungry and tired of cooking. The view from the windows is wooded and dreamy with peaks of the endless water stretching behind the trees. The place was clean, directions for entry and exit were clear, and modern appliances made it easy to keep things clean without spending much time. I'd definitely go back. I loved the artwork, layout and linens. Until next time, Fennville!
