About the property

Villa, 4 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 4.25 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

Located along one of the stunning ridgelines soaring over Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coastline, 180 del Mar delivers commanding 180° ocean views stretching thirty miles on a clear day. The ocean provides only one stunning feature of the property. The pristine jungle ridge of Escaleras offers our guests a unique backdrop of lush tropical vegetation and close encounters with the wildlife it supports. The sound of monkeys makes for an interesting wakeup call, and there is never a shortage of tropical birds brandishing dramatic colors. Guests can anticipate a distinctive and spectacular sunset every evening no matter what time of year they chose to visit, and when the sun dips down below the horizon a new stage of stars is set.

Your stay at 180 del Mar will be one of the most memorable of a lifetime. The house was designed, built and finished all by the owner, whose unique vision resulted in three octagonal towers that provide the feeling of a never ending perspective.

Two towers house the bedrooms, purposely detached from the main living space to instill a feeling of privacy even when travelling with close family. Each spacious suite offers a distinct and impressive view, with privet terrace, bathrooms feature relaxing hot water showers, double sink vanities, and ample closet space. Of the four rooms, two contain king sized mattresses, while the others come equipped with queen sized beds, but upon request could be outfitted with additional mattresses to accommodate different sleeping situations (i.e. children).

The main tower of the house will provide everything for your home away from home. The enormity of the living room is only amplified when the accordion doors open expanding the room to the outside veranda and the ever present jungle breezes. Comfortable furnishings and handcrafted wood work give a warm and relaxing feeling as you enjoy the scenery. The kitchen was outfitted by a professional chef, so if you fancy yourself a galloping gourmet or just want to surprise everyone with breakfast, you will find everything you need; large two door refrigerator, professional gas range, dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, blender, coffee maker, full set of dinner ware for up to 15 including crystal stem ware, as well as its plastic equivalent. The dinning space features a beautiful handcrafted table that seats eight comfortably. Facing the ocean, read a book, take a nap, sip a cocktail from the wraparound porch, or take an invigorating dip in the infinity edge Jacuzzi. A fully equipped laundry room and powder room round out the features of the home.

About Eduardo Avancini

My name is Eduardo Avancini, together with my mom, Noemi, we purchased property in Dominical in 2002 and I moved from Southampton, New York to break ground here in the hills of Escaleras. Warm water and good waves may have enticed me initially, but after 13 years this is my home. My family has grown from my daughter who came with me from New York, to include my wife and two sons who were born here. My mom recently retired and joined us in April. Being a carpenter, I designed and finished the house along with my crew.

Eduardo Avancini purchased this house in 2004

Why Eduardo Avancini chose Dominical

The southern Pacific zone is the most magical in the entire country of Costa Rica. Lush tropical jungle kisses the sea, with dramatic rock points and expansive stretches of pristine beach. Fantastic surf, incredible snorkeling and diving, impressive fishing make this area a water lovers paradise. The area around 180 del Mar remains largely unspoiled by large developments and resorts, therefore wildlife abounds. Monkeys, sloths, birds, reptiles, even elusive cats such as jaguars can be seen in the hills of Escaleras.

What makes this house unique

In the morning, peer over your outstretched feet to view the magnificent Pacific Ocean as the sun makes its way over the ridge illuminating the Marina below. Step out on your privet porch and be greeted by the gentle morning jungle breeze and perhaps a humming bird or two. Enjoy your Costa Rican coffee on the veranda as you try to decide what your agenda is for the day, either choosing one of the various activities or tours or simply staying put with a good book, inspiration is in the view! Wind down the day in the reverse. Enjoy a cool beverage in the Jacuzzi breathing as the sun makes its final descent and dips into the sea. Watch as the sky unfolds with stars or the moon makes her appearance. Sleep with dreams of another day just like this one for tomorrow.

Great house, great view¡

  • 5 of 5

We were there the last week of December, and really enjoy the place. The mountains are great, the view is spectacular, the layout is good. Keep in mind that you need a 4x4 to get there. The only black spot was the Jacuzzi had not hot water, but surely I recommend you to stay there¡¡¡

This house was amazing, with 4 suites all having beds and baths there was no debate over who was going to get the master bedroom- because they all were- private, beautiful home! I would come back every year if I could!

Asolutely Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

I must disclose I am a travel agent for Costa Rica, so I live off measuring quality for travel. I booked the house online for my family vacation because I knew the area was perfect for a month vacation. The accessibility for tours and to other cities is very good, so thus the choice. I paid full price, so I can disclose that my review is 100% unbiased.

In my experience, the success of a rental is 60% the quality of the house and 40% the quality of the response time when things go wrong or things are not as expected. This house was a 100% rated experience! I loved it!! The house is absolutely gorgeous, the way it is set up for you to have a huge common area with the bedrooms to the sides provides the perfect amount of privacy for a group of families traveling together. The kitchen was fully equipped and everything was in working order. I am very picky about quality mattresses, and I can say I was very happy here! Waking up every morning with the view of the ocean is priceless.

I was worried as I read the previous review right before leaving, and I can say I disagree (or they already fixed anything he was talking about!). The house is in great shape. I found it to be fantastically well kept but most of all, Elizabeth and Eduardo were wonderfully speedy in helping or fixing anything I needed.

You DO need a 4x4, specially in the rainy season. I do recommend you flying in and out of San Jose as it is only 3hrs away. Liberia is a much longer drive to the house, about 5.5hrs.

Conclusion: I am fully satisfied with this house and the stay in general and will definitely come back! I will send customers their way as this is a fantastic option at a great price and the rental experience was superb!

Beautiful architecture; awesome view; needs maintenance

  • 3 of 5

The house is embedded in the rain forest, up a steep hill overlooking the ocean. Once you get over the beauty of the construction and calm down from the awe of the view, you quickly begin to notice that the place needs some maintenance. Despite the fact that the place needs a fair amount of repair and a fresh coat of paint, the setting could not have been better. We loved the open and huge rooms, the sound of wildlife especially in the morning, and the fresh air from the rain. The owners were very nice. Overall we had a great time and enjoyed the house but felt that it fell short of previous reviewers' impressions. I would recommend staying here with the disclosures mentioned.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking your time to review our home... we know returning from vacations are always a bit hectic, jumping back into daily routines. We were blessed to have had such a busy season, full through most of our high season. Maintenance here is DAILY as the jungle is right at our door steps, keeping the house clean and free from some of the less welcome jungle creatures might get over looked, but is essential. Our hopes are that guests find the home comfortable and clean. Larger projects like painting must be done when the house is open long enough to get in and really do a good job. Our Green season slows down, but my "Honey-Do" list never does! Thank you for coming to stay.

Our time at "The Compound"!

  • 5 of 5

My family arrived to "The Compound" (this was our nickname for the property as it really felt like we were in our own private community) late in the evening after about a 6 hour drive from the Liberian airport. In case there is any question, YES you must have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Due to the time of our arrival, Elizabeth met us the next afternoon to welcome us and to go over any questions or concerns that we had. Primary communication was done via email, and that worked out well for us.

-The home was very much as described in the pictures, plenty of room and space for everyone to spread out. The amenities on site were everything that we needed, the only problem we had was the bubbles in the Whirlpool worked sporadically, but still refreshing just the same. In regards to electrical outages, we experienced only one outage that lasted for more than a couple of hours and that was early in the morning. Nature was in full force on the property: beautiful flowers & trees, friendly dogs (the owners) as well as howler monkeys that woke us in the mornings and the cicada bugs that would put us to sleep at night. There are a variety of other bugs as well that we found, but nothing at all that we were really too concerned with. The only concern were a few wasp nests, but they didn't bother us at all and were going to be removed after our stay.

-Elizabeth did a great job "pre-trip" and during our stay giving us suggestions about things to do around Dominical and surrounding areas such as (where to shop, where to eat, beaches, fishing, snorkeling, rainforests). Elizabeth did help prearrange excursions for our group (fishing, snorkeling & rafting with local outfitters). Great places to visit in Dominical (Mono Congo, Phat Noodle, Dominicalito Beach). Also take the time to do the rafting with Dominical Surf Adventures, Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary, Parque Reptilandia, Hacienda Baru as well as a day trip to Corcovado.

Enjoy the sunsets and get out and explore!
