Located along one of the stunning ridgelines soaring over Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coastline, 180 del Mar delivers commanding 180° ocean views stretching thirty miles on a clear day. The ocean provides only one stunning feature of the property. The pristine jungle ridge of Escaleras offers our guests a unique backdrop of lush tropical vegetation and close encounters with the wildlife it supports. The sound of monkeys makes for an interesting wakeup call, and there is never a shortage of tropical birds brandishing dramatic colors. Guests can anticipate a distinctive and spectacular sunset every evening no matter what time of year they chose to visit, and when the sun dips down below the horizon a new stage of stars is set.
Your stay at 180 del Mar will be one of the most memorable of a lifetime. The house was designed, built and finished all by the owner, whose unique vision resulted in three octagonal towers that provide the feeling of a never ending perspective.
Two towers house the bedrooms, purposely detached from the main living space to instill a feeling of privacy even when travelling with close family. Each spacious suite offers a distinct and impressive view, with privet terrace, bathrooms feature relaxing hot water showers, double sink vanities, and ample closet space. Of the four rooms, two contain king sized mattresses, while the others come equipped with queen sized beds, but upon request could be outfitted with additional mattresses to accommodate different sleeping situations (i.e. children).
The main tower of the house will provide everything for your home away from home. The enormity of the living room is only amplified when the accordion doors open expanding the room to the outside veranda and the ever present jungle breezes. Comfortable furnishings and handcrafted wood work give a warm and relaxing feeling as you enjoy the scenery. The kitchen was outfitted by a professional chef, so if you fancy yourself a galloping gourmet or just want to surprise everyone with breakfast, you will find everything you need; large two door refrigerator, professional gas range, dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, blender, coffee maker, full set of dinner ware for up to 15 including crystal stem ware, as well as its plastic equivalent. The dinning space features a beautiful handcrafted table that seats eight comfortably. Facing the ocean, read a book, take a nap, sip a cocktail from the wraparound porch, or take an invigorating dip in the infinity edge Jacuzzi. A fully equipped laundry room and powder room round out the features of the home.

My name is Eduardo Avancini, together with my mom, Noemi, we purchased property in Dominical in 2002 and I moved from Southampton, New York to break ground here in the hills of Escaleras. Warm water and good waves may have enticed me initially, but after 13 years this is my home. My family has grown from my daughter who came with me from New York, to include my wife and two sons who were born here. My mom recently retired and joined us in April. Being a carpenter, I designed and finished the house along with my crew.
Eduardo Avancini purchased this house in 2004
The southern Pacific zone is the most magical in the entire country of Costa Rica. Lush tropical jungle kisses the sea, with dramatic rock points and expansive stretches of pristine beach. Fantastic surf, incredible snorkeling and diving, impressive fishing make this area a water lovers paradise. The area around 180 del Mar remains largely unspoiled by large developments and resorts, therefore wildlife abounds. Monkeys, sloths, birds, reptiles, even elusive cats such as jaguars can be seen in the hills of Escaleras.
In the morning, peer over your outstretched feet to view the magnificent Pacific Ocean as the sun makes its way over the ridge illuminating the Marina below. Step out on your privet porch and be greeted by the gentle morning jungle breeze and perhaps a humming bird or two. Enjoy your Costa Rican coffee on the veranda as you try to decide what your agenda is for the day, either choosing one of the various activities or tours or simply staying put with a good book, inspiration is in the view! Wind down the day in the reverse. Enjoy a cool beverage in the Jacuzzi breathing as the sun makes its final descent and dips into the sea. Watch as the sky unfolds with stars or the moon makes her appearance. Sleep with dreams of another day just like this one for tomorrow.
Thank you for the review, your families were awesome... my kids had such fun with your terrific children, and it was a pleasure to meet you all... if you all do come back this way, we'd love to have you again!
My family arrived to "The Compound" (this was our nickname for the property as it really felt like we were in our own private community) late in the evening after about a 6 hour drive from the Liberian airport. In case there is any question, YES you must have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Due to the time of our arrival, Elizabeth met us the next afternoon to welcome us and to go over any questions or concerns that we had. Primary communication was done via email, and that worked out well for us.
-The home was very much as described in the pictures, plenty of room and space for everyone to spread out. The amenities on site were everything that we needed, the only problem we had was the bubbles in the Whirlpool worked sporadically, but still refreshing just the same. In regards to electrical outages, we experienced only one outage that lasted for more than a couple of hours and that was early in the morning. Nature was in full force on the property: beautiful flowers & trees, friendly dogs (the owners) as well as howler monkeys that woke us in the mornings and the cicada bugs that would put us to sleep at night. There are a variety of other bugs as well that we found, but nothing at all that we were really too concerned with. The only concern were a few wasp nests, but they didn't bother us at all and were going to be removed after our stay.
-Elizabeth did a great job "pre-trip" and during our stay giving us suggestions about things to do around Dominical and surrounding areas such as (where to shop, where to eat, beaches, fishing, snorkeling, rainforests). Elizabeth did help prearrange excursions for our group (fishing, snorkeling & rafting with local outfitters). Great places to visit in Dominical (Mono Congo, Phat Noodle, Dominicalito Beach). Also take the time to do the rafting with Dominical Surf Adventures, Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary, Parque Reptilandia, Hacienda Baru as well as a day trip to Corcovado.
Enjoy the sunsets and get out and explore!
Elizabeth was very responsive, ready to answer any questions. Really first rate. We will be back again
We loved 180 Del Mar, it has the greatest view !!! Beautiful location and Elizabeth and Eduardo were awesome landlords. Will definitely come back if possible!!
We had a fabulous visit. Pictures are accurate. Owners are approachable helpful. The dishwasher was broken when we arrived but fixed within a day. The 4 bedrooms were perfect for the 7 of us staying at the house. The kitchen was well appointed with plenty of dishes, pots and pans. There was a blender for our daily smoothies; a food processor, toaster.....just about any useful small appliance we needed.
We enjoyed the beach town of dominical. We had a lovely visit to the hacienda baru wildlife refuge and a great hike to nauyaca falls. Wish we would have known about the waterfall trek on the road up to the house but we only realized what it was on our last day. Grocery shopping in Uvuta was easy. Lots of little restaurants in dominical. We especially liked SuRaza and roadside ceviche!
This is a perfect base for an adventurous visit to Costa Rica! Elizabeth and Eduardo, the owners, live just below the rental. They were absolutely wonderful to work with. They helped us before the trip with everything from making sure our cell phones would work, to sorting out and making reservations for activities, to providing perfect directions for finding the place in the dark.
Once we were there, Elizabeth and her family (including three very friendly loving dogs) very much embraced us at the level we wanted. When we needed help finding something in the house, they were there, but they were never intruding. Elizabeth was wonderful at being available by email whenever we had a question. Eduardo and Elizabeth invited us to join them for a bonfire for New Year's Eve, which was a great time. They are lovely people, and we enjoyed their children Cooper and Shane a lot too!
The home itself was great! It has four very separate bedrooms, and one huge great room/kitchen area joining all of them. We were two couple and two single people, and we all had plenty of space and privacy; while at the same time there was plenty of room to work as a group in the kitchen, and hang out on the deck together.
The house is only a few years old, and is in great shape. There is plenty of everything in the kitchen for you to use, and everything works. Because the home is on the edge of the jungle, you will definitely see lots of birds, butterflys, flowers, and the corresponding insects. This is not a sterile inclusive resort, but a very clean and tidy home on the edge of the jungle. Expect the howler monkeys to wake you most mornings, which we all thought was very cool!
The driveway is steep and exciting as you come up the hill from Dominicalita. If you are from the country, it's no big deal. If you aren't used to challenging dirt roads, well, you will be fine but don't be surprised. Both for easy access to this place and for getting around, it is nice to have a roomy 4 wheel drive vehicle.
The local people are also wonderful. Dominicalita, a couple km away, is a sweet little very local town where you can get basic groceries and lots of smiles. Basic Spanish knowledge is helpful, but not required. You can get to tons of activities within a half hour drive.
We are all happy to endorse Elizabeth and this rental...we give it 5 stars. Mike from Michigan
