Rock of Ages has been sitting on the shores of Lake Erie since 1861. It is built of native, local limestone, and is listed on the National Historic Register. There simply is not another comparable home on Lake Erie. It is wonderfully unique and fun to explore. It is very solid (like a 'Rock') and in great shape, but we have renovated the first floor, creating a new Great Room and state of the art kitchen with everything needed to cook for and dine 30+ guests.
Rock of Ages overlooks the Lake Erie islands and is in the quaint village of Marblehead and is only a hop, skip, and a jump from the east gate of Lakeside (The Chautauqua of Lake Erie) in one direction and the historic Marblehead lighthouse in the other. The lighthouse is a spot of natural beauty and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes.
We have traveled around the world and this is our favorite place on earth! Friendly, down-home people, great entertainment (at Lakeside and the islands), wonderful local history, great boating and fishing, Cedar Point, and the waves and the winds of Lake Erie, are constantly there. What a place! From Rock of Ages'tower room is one of the best views of Lake Erie in the area. Come and see!
Rock of Ages has a 120-foot spacious lakefront patio and three other patios with plenty of furniture for sunbathing, eating and gazing at the lake and watching the boats and ferry to Kelley's island. Of course, you can swim off the flat glacial rocks right in front of the house. A large sandy beach is a short drive away. We still have the original limestone fossil walkways from when 'The Rock' was first built. There is a large hot tub overlooking the lake.
We have plenty of room for the whole family (7000+sq.ft.) and lots of bed and bath options. There is a first-floor suite with a king bed and its' own bath for those who do not do stairs. On the second floor each of the five bedrooms has a king-size bed and a private bath. The third floor is great for kids. Six bedrooms surround a large common area with a large-screen TV.
There is one king bed, one queen bed, 5 full-size beds, 3 twins and 4 rollaways up there. The third floor bedrooms share a fullsize bath and two half baths. You have already heard about the view from the tower room! It has a kingsize bed, its' own bath, and a roof-top patio. Folks will fight over who gets to sleep there!
On the first floor as well as the kitchen and dining/great room, there is a living room with TV and computer with internet access. The first floor also has two half baths. The lower level - not really a basement (it was the old summer kitchen) is a large game room area with a pool table, pingpong table, TV, half bath, and tables and chairs. There is a backyard patio with two large grills. Rock of Ages has a large parking area to accommodate big groups.
Although it is wonderful in the summer with the windows open and the lake breezes, we do have air conditioning. Rock of Ages can be used year round and the lake in all its glory in the winter with ice and snow is something else!! It is a great place for business or church groups or special interest retreats and seminars, for example birders or artists.
Our rates are for the entire property, not per person as in an inn or bed and breakfast. Our kitchen can easily handle the needs of a catered event or a weekend getaway. We can put you in touch with a couple of local catering companies just around the corner from Rock of Ages who have catered a number of groups staying at Rock of Ages. They can cook for you all week,or just do a special meal indoors or outdoors.

It is an absolute privilege for me to own Rock of Ages and to share it with guests! I love the local history of this area, and The Rock is an integral part of the history of the quarry in Marblehead and the founding of Lakeside --The Chautauqua on Lake Erie
The Owner purchased this house in 2002
We have had a cottage at Lakeside for a number of years and we love this area of Lake Erie! The views are amazing, and it is very relaxing to spend time here.
Plenty of space for our family and friends! Enough bathrooms :) and privacy! I love to cook--- Eating outside on the lakefront patio--
We came to Rock of Ages to learn more about God, have fun, play games and have good times! thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us!
I have stayed at Rock of Ages three times with a group of 10 women! It is a wonder place to stay. Large enough for the whole group, yet cozy corners to get away from it all. The kitchen is large and great to work in. The view of the lake from almost all the windows is an added bonus! If the weather is nice, you can walk right up town to all the shops and places to eat. I can not say enough good things about this place!
What a great place for our extended family gathering. It was so wonderful to see the cousins in the kitchen preparing dinner, to sit outside and watch the gravel ships, and eat altogether.
We've rented Rock of Ages three times and with each visit, I am as impressed as I was the first time. The occasion for our most recent stay was to celebrate my father's 90th birthday with his siblings (ages 77-89), children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. There were 29 of us altogether. Rock of Ages is the only home that can accommodate this large of a family without any of the inconveniences of renting a hotel. There's something special that happens when everyone is gathered together in the great room and dining area while others are prepping meals in the kitchen: conversation! Though the home has a number of TVs, none were ever turned on the three days we were there, we were all too busy catching up with one another. The kitchen is a joy to work in with every pan, utensil, serving dish you could want. The beds are comfortable, the linens luxurious, and plenty of bathrooms. I can't wait to return for whatever the next occasion might be! So grateful Marla is willing to share this gem with us.
ROCK of AGES!!!!!
We took this literally because our group consisted of the youngest being 6 months and the eldest ______? Read on.
This place is amazing. Words cannot express the beauty in the home and all the added touches Marla gave to our family experience. We were there to celebrate the 90th birthday of our mom. She thought she was going to a quaint bed and breakfast but when she walked in the place she thought it seemed huge. When she turned the kitchen corner to look into the living room there in front of her on the beautiful wooden banister stood 40 family members to greet her. In the background one heard the song "Happy Birthday" being played on the grand piano.
Out the front windows one can see Lake Erie, frozen at this time of the year. The kids in our group loved making snowmen and just being outdoors taking in the ambiance of the snow falling from the sky.
The first floor had room for everyone to sit, visit, eat, do karaoke, reflect, and just connect with all. There were three areas to sit back and do whatever.
The second floor was amazing with each bedroom having its own bathroom. It was so cozy under all of the warm feather blankets and yes having your own bathroom to share with no one was grand.
The third floor brought more excited for the cousins got to room with each other. The girls loved the pink bedroom with the cool ceiling. Some of the boys slept in the extra family room on that floor. They had to watch one more movie before they fell asleep. Little to their knowledge they feel asleep 15 minutes once the movie started.
The game room in the basement lead to many ping-pong tournaments. If that was not enough fun, you could also challenge each other at a game of pool.
The kitchen was well equipped and nothing was lacking at all for our family pleasures.
My mom loved her surprise party and all of us enjoyed visiting family members that came for afar. What a neat place to rent out for these special memories.
Thank you for all that you did for our family and opening your home for others to enjoy too.
This was the second year in a row our family celebrated the Holiday's at Rock of Ages. We found the place to be clean, cozy, and fresh upon our arrival. Believe me when I say the house is stocked very well, an abundance of serving dishes and silverware, spices in the cupboard, dish washing detergent, laundry detergent, you name it, they have it! The separate bedroom that is connected to the back of the home on the main floor, is a dream for the Grandparents to retreat to.
Those guests who could not make it due to 8 inches of snow, missed the madness of a snowball fight on the second night. Twenty-some teenagers and adults engaged in friendly fire. A good time had by all! Thank you Marla!
We spent a weekend at Rock of Ages with a group of 25 women, who work together. We have already booked this house again for next year! Your home is spectacular, beautiful, comfortable, and equipped with everything we needed. We loved everything about this property. We never felt crowded, and there is plenty of space to be alone or for everyone to be together, both inside and out. Loved the hot tub, swimming in the lake, the views, the antique furnishings, the fully stocked kitchen, the lighthouse, and the shops, and never having to wait for a bathroom or shower!! What a gem this place is. Thank you for sharing it with us, we can't wait for next year.
