Overview

St. Augustine Area House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 2-5)

Come and stay at our custom-built marsh-front BEACH HOME -- located just a block off the ocean. You will have all of the upper level (2nd story) & widow's peak to yourself. We are located 15 minutes south of historical downtown St. Augustine, 5 minutes north of Marineland, the world's first underwater studio and "oceanarium" and just 35 minutes north of the world-famous, fun-filled Daytona Beach, all beautiful coastal drives.

The upper level consists of a huge Dining-Kitchen-Living area with 1/2 bath, spacious bedroom with large full bath, wrap-around deck and a widow's peak/tower. The petite dining nook rests in the southeast corner and offers an ocean view. The modern, all-electric kitchen is fully equipped and separated from the living area by a full-length, old-Florida pecky cypress bar. The roomy living area is covered by cherry/oak wood floors hand-made from trees cut right here in Florida. The bedroom (with plush king-sized bed) and living area open onto wrap-around deck.

The west-facing deck is uncovered for those sunbathers not wanting to leave the house, and the southeast-facing deck is covered for a shaded reprieve. Ascend the spiral staircase to the tower for a panoramic view of the ocean, marshland, Matanzes Inlet, Summer Haven River & the Intracoastal Waterway.

Downstairs you have an outdoor garden shower (hot/cold)and a small deck looking out over the marsh. ALL VERY PRIVATE! Our custom-built home was made-to-order for 2 self-indulgent adults and is quite exquisite with its indigenous Florida wood accents -- the cypress bar, cherry-wood cabinetry, baseboards, and door framing/rosettes. Although built for 2, it sleeps 4 comfortably (sofa-bed) and up to 7 rather closely (blow-up mattress available). We sometimes use the blow-up mattress just to sleep out under the stars!

About The Owner

We, my husband & myself, are 50'ish & love staying in our own home. We stay in it as much as possible. We built this house in 2003 & have thoroughly enjoyed it. My husband is an avid fisherman, oyster-gatherer, clammer, & surfer.

The Owner purchased this house in 2003

Why The Owner chose St. Augustine Area

We built our house primarily for ourselves. It had been a dream of my husband to live in this area since he was a teenager & began surfing.

What makes this house unique

Our house is a comfortable, working beach house. We have bikes, surfboard, fishing poles. The living area is very open & warm.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great location for nature lovers

  • 4 of 5

This beach house at Matanzas Inlet was as described, and met our needs. This was a spacious one bedroom home, perfect for two adults, and we appreciated that it was pet friendly. The decor was unique, with beachy wood carvings. We loved the large deck where you could sit in the sun on the west side in the afternoon sheltered from the onshore breeze or warm up in the morning sun on the south side. We could take a short walk across the road to a beach accessible at low tide, or a long walk/short drive to the beach at Matanzas inlet. There you can choose from the intercoastal side on cooler days, or the ocean side. Both have white sand beaches, and were generally quite quiet. You can walk a loop across the bridge, around the inlet to the ocean, and back. Many shells! The location was halfway in between St. Augustine and Palm Coast, with one restaurant within walking distance, and the nearest other restaurants about six miles away. It took about twenty minutes to drive in to St. Augustine, and the nearest grocery stores were eight to nine miles away, so we spent some time driving. Many nature preserves were nearby, including the River to Sea preserve and Washington Oaks state park. There was walking trail along nearby route 206 as well. We went to the farmers' markets at Marineland on Sunday's and the Ampitheatre on Wednesdays on Anastasia Island. The owners were very helpful, informing us about Kennedy Space Center rocket launches visible from the upper deck, and sharing a catch of fish. We were very comfortable and would rent it again.

Great Family Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 had a wonderful stay at the Turtle Pen. There are plenty of different beaches to explore in the area, the closest being a short walk across A1A. The house is very spacious and the massive deck is a nice feature. Everything is very clean and nicely decorated. The owners are very accommodating and will go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need.

Owner's Response: Over the years, we have had a number of lovebirds staying with us, and they have all seemed to thoroughly enjoy our "beach house on the moon" with it's quiet privacy and roomy comfort. Thanks, Kevin, for your reaffirmation of this.

Wonderful New Years Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd visit to Summer Haven Turtle Pen. I neglected to write a review the 1st time in March and promised I would make up for the fault.

This is a great place for a couple and good dogs, or just a couple who likes a quiet beach. We brought our 3 dogs and spent a lot of time walking the beaches. It's a quick ride(or walk) over the Matanzas Inlet to the National Park beach, or just a few minutes down the road to Washington Oaks State Park and all of the trails. Of course, we walked over to Old A1A onto the beach right here and found plenty of shells and birds to chase (not me, the dogs).

The house is quiet and private behind a gate and the deck wraps around 2 sides of the house, so we could get winter sun without the breeze. Inside it is very comfortable and the owners took extra effort to make sure we were comfortable. They loaned us their bikes do we didn't have to bring our own and were flexible about arrival/departure times as the schedule allowed it.

Great restaurants, groceries, and tourist "stuff" are all with 30 minute drives or less yet you are away from the crowds with views of the ocean and ICW.

We will be back, maybe without dogs, or maybe with more!

Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I decided to go to St. Augustine for our anniversary and were needing a one bedroom suite. We checked other condo's and some small beach houses, but they were very pricey and a bit dated. We stumbled across this house and gave it a try not only for its value, but also because we have never stayed at this location. We loved our stay! The master bedroom has a luxurious King-size bed and the home is filled with wood carvings, which I loved. The owner has also set up a nice entertainment system with surround sound, which we made use of due to the frequent rain on our visit. We took a short drive to the public beach down the road (maybe a half mile) and also visited the Fort Matanzas while there. I thought it was a little closer to downtown St. Augustine when we booked this house, but I was actually pleased to only have to deal with the traffic when we chose to venture downtown. We strongly suggest visiting Paula's Beachside Grill during your stay. You won't be disappointed with their burgers! Overall, this beach house is in a great spot and the perfect little hideaway. It is an upstairs apartment, but this was not an inconvenience to us. The widow's tower adds a nice touch, as well as all of the outdoor space. We were pleased with dealing with the owner, Lola Jane, as well because of her charm. The overall experience was great for us and we will definitely be visiting again (with the whole family next time!). True Florida Charm!

Relaxing days away from home

  • 5 of 5

We sat on the deck of this house & thoroughly enjoyed the cool breeze & comfortable furniture.

The bed was extremely comfortable too. The only thing we missed was a view of the ocean.

Owner's Response: While you do not have a direct view of the ocean from the deck, you need only ascend the spiral staircase to the widow's peak that gives you a panaramic view of the ocean, the Intercoastal Waterway, the salt-water marsh and the Matanzas Inlet and, on a clear day, Fort Matanzas National Monument.
