As private owners of The Laurelei for 12 years, and visits to Cayman for 23 years, we offer travel advice to our happy guests.
We are private owners of The Laurelei, purchased in 2001 from the original owners. The Laurelei is one of only 4 groundfloor condos with a private deck & back door opening directly onto the beach. 18 feet of sliding glass doors open to gorgeous views of the Caribbean Sea. The complex of 10 units was completely rebuilt with state-of-the-art concrete construction (one of the strongest systems possible) after Hurricane Ivan caused damage in late 2004. We chose luxury upgrades, added custom furnishings, fine bedding & upholstery & linens, along with artistic touches such as original artworks and island sculpture. We take pride in constantly updating our island home, providing all the amenities and in making it as comfortable and affordable as possible for our happy guests.
Laurie Norris purchased this condo in 2001
Things we love about our island home:
We love the intimacy of a small island and the friendly and safe atmosphere that Grand Cayman offers. The North Side beaches are empty, secluded, with many open seaside areas & exclusive homes on large lots. Being alone with nature and the Sea and most of the time having the beach to ourselves is priceless. Knowing the weather and the Sea are always warm. The sea & sky are ever-changing to different hues of turquoise and cobalt, and one is enveloped in a feeling of peace and relaxation.
The North Pointe complex has a wonderful management, friendly helpful owners, and is the only apartment complex within 2 miles. The Laurelei is fully licensed with the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism.
We had an amazing time and your place is wonderful! Laurie: love your decor and obviously you have a lot of artistic talent. We found your place to be very comfortable and just perfect.
Among our highlights were three trips: a jet-ski Safari which included snorkeling; sail to sting ray city with snorkeling and a sunset sail. The kids loved to snorkel. We met many of your neighbors (Bob, Cindy, Julie, Nicole and I am blanking on other names). They were all lovely! We followed many of your recommendations and they were perfect. Some of our best meals were from the restaurant down the road (Over the Edge?) and we also had a fabulous (a bit pricy) meal from a restaurant next to Calypso Grill (on the bay side but at the end of seven mile beach and close to cemetery reef) the restaurant we wanted was closed and this was next door (I think it was called Harbour _______?). It was amazing and we recommend it. Hurley's was better than Foster's but Fosters was just fine for most items. We usually ate one meal out and one in and it varied from lunch to dinner. We found the condo and rum point area to be our favorite area on the island as we prefer a less crowded and touristy area. We also recommend the Botanical Gardens as we were pleasantly surprised by the floral garden and other aspects of the gardens. We really fell in love with Grand Cayman and can't wait to return. I would love to rent from you again--and for a future family trip/reunion. We found your place just incredible- very clean, comfortable and beautiful. The location is fabulous!
This was a real find! The condo was immaculate and we were welcomed by Hibiscus blossoms everywhere around the condo. The rental was spacious and the beds were very comfortable. The kitchen had everything you needed, coffeepot and blender too. There is satellite TV and internet at the condo. The lanai is wonderful. This particular condo has the best of both, you can sit on your deck and see the ocean and the pool, no need to choose. The nearby pub, literally a short walk next door, was wonderful, local friendly people with good foot at a reasonable price. We snorkled right off the beach in front of the condo, it is very shallow so you have to go a long a way out but WOW, we saw a huge turtle!. Rum Point beach is great, gotta go there. There is a washer and dryer at the condo too. Literally all you'll need for this trip is two swimsuits, one pair of shorts, two shirts and a sundress. Also bring lots of sunscreen and apply often as the salt water washes it off faster than just the pool. The condo also has floaties and noodles for the pool and lots of beach towels, yeah. They have a wonderful place here and you'll be glad you chose their condo. I would definitely stay here again I only hope it doesn't take another 18 years to come back. Remember when you go that everything is done on "island time" so relax, breathe, slow down, enjoy and do at least one over-the-top thing a day.
As a side note here are some things travelers should know that might be helpful before you go; sometimes its cheaper to eat out than go to the grocery store, it just depends. If you can, take one suitcase full of food, snacks mostly it will save a bunch. Talk to the locals they know where great snorkle spots are. Stingray City is a must. The Atlantis Submarine was cool. Swimming with the horses was the highlight for my daughter. Scuba diving was great too.
Car is a definite must.
Stay as long as you can and do all that you can, you'll love it here.
Laurie's condo is everything she says it is. It is nicely appointed with all of the comforts of home. The kitchen was stocked with everything you need, and I do mean everything, including a blender which was great for frozen drinks on the deck overlooking the ocean.
The property is well maintained inside and out. The pool was clean and inviting and the grounds were well kept.
There are plenty of towels and some floats/noodles and such available for use. Some snorkel equipment too. Along with a couple of beach mats, beach totes and coolers too.
Plenty of extras as well from previous guests who paid it forward with extra items they left behind like sunscreen, bugspray, laundry detergent. Even a couple of beers in the fridge. We carried on the tradition in kind.
The condo is in a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle, very relaxing. There is good snorkeling right outside your back door. The other units were vacant during our stay so we had the beach and the pool all to ourselves!
The is a small grocery and liquor store near by as well as a couple of restaurants. We rented bikes and rode to Rum Point and Starfish Point. You will probably need a car. There is another grocery and liguor store and a few more restaurants on the east side, about an easy 15 minute drive with almost no traffic. Boddentown had a few more places to eat and was about 20 minutes away. You never have to get into the "thick of it" if you choose not to. We only went into Georgetown once on a day with no cruise ships so it was pretty quiet. The drive took about 45 mins and was not bad. Google maps helped by letting us know when a roundabout was coming up but it was pretty straight forward.
I definitely recommend this place, and dealing with Laurie was a breeze. If you are looking for a clean quiet place to stay in a beautiful location drop Laurie a line, she will answer all of your questions.
This was a truly amazing place and deal! The condo is adorable, clean and ready to go. We agree with other comments that everything was spacious and the beds were very comfortable. We were four adults and one two year old. The kitchen had everything we needed: coffeepot, spices, every utensil and pot to cook with and a blender too! There is satellite TV and internet at the condo. What makes this place unusual is you get the best of both worlds. This particular condo is positioned so that you sit on the deck and see the ocean and pool at the same time! There was unexpected high winds the first two days so we adjusted our itinerary accordingly (this was unusual/a fluke for this time of year). The owners were absolutely 100% very easy to work with. We had rented a car (you need too!) and drove around exploring 7 mile, Dolphin Cove, Hell, Rum Point etc. The end summary is this…we were blessed that we connected with this condo. It gave us all the privacy and yet access to so many things but not at high prices. Here is what we recommend: Go to Rum Point Beach! Food and drinks are very reasonable, beach is beautiful and the activities are very well priced. Attend a beach barbeque on the East End (there are more than one). Don’t bring towels from home. The condo has floaties and noodles for the pool and lots of beach towels. Eat at Over the Edge! Their prices were well matched for their food and the lobster was yummy. Sting Ray City is the coolest thing ever and worth the money. Dolphin Cove was a once in a lifetime adventure (this was our most expensive outing) and as the two dolphins had just given birth, we got to meet their babies! There is a “grocery store” near the condo with very minimal stuff. Tukka restaurant has amazing happy hour prices and food. The little gift shop across from them (might look scary) but has the most wonderful local souvenirs from local artists! Bring a duffel bag or suitcase carry on with dry snacks and this off sets the cost. Hell was overrated and not worth the drive in (we had such high hopes to mail postcards etc but it just wasn’t worth the drive in and all the postcards had the guy who owns the place face on it…which looking back was actually pretty funny). We cannot even begin to thank the owners for this amazing opportunity.
This is a beautiful condo on the quiet side of the island. Everything was just as it was described, very clean and well maintained. My husband and I brought our daughter, son-in law and 21 month old granddaughter for the week. The condo had everything we needed including a high chair and Pak-n-play. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes and appliances which made it easy for in house meals with the baby. The pool area is perfect. It was nice having a ground floor location with the lanai opening up to the beach and pool. Rum Point is just down the road and a great place to spend time. If you love high rises and daily shopping, this is not the place for you, but if you want quiet relaxation, you will love Laurelei. Laurie was very quick to respond to any questions we had before traveling.
This was such a wonderful place to stay. The condo is just beautiful (exactly as it is in the pictures on this site) and the view is to die for....full ocean view. It's so relaxing and sleeping at night is just awesome with the sound of the waves and breezes lulling you to sleep. We've stayed in several condos on our different trips and this was absolutely the most well appointed condo we have ever stayed in. There was absolutely nothing we lacked! Also the owner provided us with an an abundance of truly useful information before we arrived and there was a booklet with island information when we arrived. Driving on the left was easier than we thought. The condo is in a quiet part of the island so if you're a night life person, this may not be the place for you but we loved it. Rum Point - two miles further north was such a fun place with amazing sunsets. There is always a lounge chair or hammock available. If you like Kahlua and rum - you must try the "Mudslide!" It's delicious! Sting Ray City is a must. The huge stingrays are the most amazing creatures. The snorkeling and diving are incredible beyond words. The local people are incredibly nice and always helpful.
We spent almost 2 weeks at The Laurelei this fall and it was the most perfect vacation we have ever had! The booking was seamless, the information on the condo and surrounding area was perfect. It was a very slow time of year and we were the only renters in the entire complex of 10 condos. We had the beach, pool, water, charcoal grill, everything all to ourselves. The condo is a perfect size for 2 couples and it is gorgeous! Laurie was very accommodating and willing to answer all our questions before we arrived. Her recommendation for renting a car from McCurleys was very helpful and such a great service to first time visitors. Especially nice was the large lanai, tons of beach towels, the laundry facilities, and the well equipped kitchen. The pool was wonderful and kept very clean even though we were the only ones there. The people we met were all very friendly. We could not have asked for anything more. It was very quiet and the snorkeling right off the beach kept us busy every single day with lots of fish and ocean creatures to watch. The only drawback to going in late Sept/early October is your choice of restaurants that are open that time of year on the North side. We did take a trip to all the other parts of the island a few times and George Town has plenty of choices. We had a great vacation and hope to return one day to North Pointe. It definitely gets 5 stars from us.
Set directly on the edge of the Caribbean Sea, The Laurelei is one of 10 condos in the intimate complex of North Pointe, in the upscale community of Cayman Kai & Rum Point. The Laurelei is located on the Caribbean's white sand coast, NOT on an inlet, lagoon, or canal, as are most other Cayman Kai/Rum Point condos.
A peaceful, secluded, safe locale, & long empty stretches of white sand beach are yours to explore. The Laurelei is waiting! New in 2007 with up-to-date custom accessories.
With 18 ft of sliding glass doors, The Laurelei offers incredible views of the azure Caribbean, and is a mere 20 steps to the water's edge. 1270 sq ft of living space with custom tropical decor, luxurious amenities, free WiFi & local calls and all the comforts of home.
The Laurelei's back door opens directly onto a private deck on the sandy beach, with adjacent freshwater wading waterfall & large pools. Great seaside restaurants are just 3-5 minutes away.
Nearby is stunning Rum Point Beach Park (2mi), operated by Red Sail Sports, offering Stingray City snorkel trips, hammocks, lounges, hammocks, gift shop, beach restaurant/bar, etc. If you want a real 'island feel', away from cruise ships, & crowds, then the quiet North Side is for you. Grand Cayman's safe easy well-lit road system begs touring.
