Perfect location and gorgeous house

  • 5 of 5

Our family (2 elementary school kids) spent a week at Sows Ear. The house was located close to the downtown. The kids loved being able to ride bikes and walk to the library, the basketball courts and the towns amazing library. The house was well stocked with everything we needed for BBQ dinners. The owners were wonderful and made sure we had everything we needed. I can't wait to come back next year.

As comfortable as home

  • 5 of 5

Sow's Ear was an absolute delight for our family of 3. It only took one day of close attention to get our 5yo daughter to look and not touch all of the interesting decorations spread around the house. The kids room is adjacent to the stairs so wouldn't recommend for under 3's without bringing a portable gate, but otherwise great. The house is very new and super comfortable. With the windows closed it is super quiet. When open, you get a fantastic airflow. The natural light throughout is also great. Although on a neighborhood side street, it is easy walk into NE Harbor (5 min or less, faster on bike), which also has a new co-working space if you need that sort of thing during your stay. The location is very convenient to everything on the island with easy bus access if you don't want to drive. The kitchen is fully setup for whatever you need and the furniture is newer and comfortable. the gardens are truly remarkable and very relaxing. Having access to the garage for storing bikes was great, so I didn't have to keep them tethered to the car the entire week. Also, don't miss a visit to the Naturalist's Notebook store in NEH. Also learned that the street you come into ties into scenic Sargent's Drive so it makes the drive home and in the morning all that much more appealing when going to other parts of the island.

Couldn't Be Better!

  • 5 of 5

If the wonders of Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park are your idea of a great vacation then this house is the perfect base. We (my wife, me, an our two daughters in their 20's) just returned from a week there. First, Northeast Harbor is quiet, lovely, and has a magnificent harbor and marina; it's well-situated for all that MDI has to offer. Secondly, the house really could not be better, especially for a family of four: it is both stylish and quite comfortable. The owners really put a lot of care into its design and upkeep -- both the interior and the grounds. I think this may be about the best house we have ever rented and it certainly reflects the owners' obvious love for it.

True Vacation Retreat for Family

  • 4 of 5

This home is lovely inside and out. Just perfect for a family of four. We woke up to amazing birds in the back yard and were able to get all around the island with such comfort and ease.

This home was an older cabin that has been transform to a gorgeous two story vacation retreat, with all the comforts of home. The expansions seem as if they are original. Seemless and very modern inside with wonderful floors, lighting, windows, and radiators. Also, the grounds are exceptional, which brings in an amazing array of birds. Fun for early morning bird watching.

Northeast Harbor is a perfect location and the house is an easy walk from town, as well as to the wonderful MDI transit system, making it easy to get anywhere, including Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor and elsewhere. Worth a visit !

Wonderful Week on MDI!

  • 5 of 5

Sow's Ear is the perfect destination and home base for an MDI vacation. The pictures do not show the lovely attention to details and the cozy, comfortable nature of the cottage. There was plenty of room for a family of four. The kitchen is well stocked, the bathrooms are immaculate, the bedrooms are spotless and comfortable, and the neighbors and owners are friendly and helpful. Our teenage boys took part in a daily adventure/rock climbing camp located in Bar Harbor, which allowed my husband and I long leisurely days exploring the island and relaxing. Some of the best carriage roads are about a mile away. I could not imagine a better home base on MDI. However, I would not recommend this home for travelers with small children. There are too many interesting things to touch!

A Real Gem

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I have rented houses all over MDI for the past few years. Sow's Ear is by far one of the best we have rented. The house was clean upon arrival, the kitchen was well stocked with everything to prepare meals, the beds were really comfortable, and there were no plumbing or heating problems. The house and yard were such that the house has lots of privacy and is quiet. There are multiple options for locations around the house to enjoy reading apart from the activities in the living room. The furniture is very comfortable! There's reliable internet and a nice office to work in if you need to. The location is perfect for access to the carriage trails at Brown Gatehouse as well as the Stanley Brook entrance to ANP, Jordan Pond and the Loop Road. The Northeast Harbor/Seal Harbor area has the most beautiful houses on the island, so the drive home to the rental is always a treat. The owners were the most responsive we've had the pleasure of dealing with so far. They are as charming as the house itself. We really enjoyed this rental, and you will too.
