Quiet lovely town; surrounded by Acadia Park; peaceful & bird loving gardens; a real oasis. Acadia Park surrounds us and the village of NE Harbor is only minutes away by walking.
Hiking; biking; boating; great restaurants on MDI; accessible to everything-; MDI free bus , the stop is minutes from house- leave your car behind.
If the wonders of Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park are your idea of a great vacation then this house is the perfect base. We (my wife, me, an our two daughters in their 20's) just returned from a week there. First, Northeast Harbor is quiet, lovely, and has a magnificent harbor and marina; it's well-situated for all that MDI has to offer. Secondly, the house really could not be better, especially for a family of four: it is both stylish and quite comfortable. The owners really put a lot of care into its design and upkeep -- both the interior and the grounds. I think this may be about the best house we have ever rented and it certainly reflects the owners' obvious love for it.
This home is lovely inside and out. Just perfect for a family of four. We woke up to amazing birds in the back yard and were able to get all around the island with such comfort and ease.
This home was an older cabin that has been transform to a gorgeous two story vacation retreat, with all the comforts of home. The expansions seem as if they are original. Seemless and very modern inside with wonderful floors, lighting, windows, and radiators. Also, the grounds are exceptional, which brings in an amazing array of birds. Fun for early morning bird watching.
Northeast Harbor is a perfect location and the house is an easy walk from town, as well as to the wonderful MDI transit system, making it easy to get anywhere, including Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor and elsewhere. Worth a visit !
Sow's Ear is the perfect destination and home base for an MDI vacation. The pictures do not show the lovely attention to details and the cozy, comfortable nature of the cottage. There was plenty of room for a family of four. The kitchen is well stocked, the bathrooms are immaculate, the bedrooms are spotless and comfortable, and the neighbors and owners are friendly and helpful. Our teenage boys took part in a daily adventure/rock climbing camp located in Bar Harbor, which allowed my husband and I long leisurely days exploring the island and relaxing. Some of the best carriage roads are about a mile away. I could not imagine a better home base on MDI. However, I would not recommend this home for travelers with small children. There are too many interesting things to touch!
My sister and I have rented houses all over MDI for the past few years. Sow's Ear is by far one of the best we have rented. The house was clean upon arrival, the kitchen was well stocked with everything to prepare meals, the beds were really comfortable, and there were no plumbing or heating problems. The house and yard were such that the house has lots of privacy and is quiet. There are multiple options for locations around the house to enjoy reading apart from the activities in the living room. The furniture is very comfortable! There's reliable internet and a nice office to work in if you need to. The location is perfect for access to the carriage trails at Brown Gatehouse as well as the Stanley Brook entrance to ANP, Jordan Pond and the Loop Road. The Northeast Harbor/Seal Harbor area has the most beautiful houses on the island, so the drive home to the rental is always a treat. The owners were the most responsive we've had the pleasure of dealing with so far. They are as charming as the house itself. We really enjoyed this rental, and you will too.
Our family of 4 had another perfect week exploring the beautiful MDI and Acadia NP. Sow's Ear is a perfect location for access to the best MDI and Acadia have to offer, but quietly tucked away in the peaceful and quaint village of Northeast Harbor. The house is beautiful, with all the comforts of home. The owner's were extremely gracious and full of helpful ideas for activities and restaurants. We loved it and cannot wait to return!
My husband and our two "twenty something" sons spent a perfect week in Northeast Harbor exploring beautiful Acadia, but it was our charming home base that made the vacation extraordinary. When all is said and done, it's where you spend the mornings rubbing the sleep from your eyes while having coffee together, cooking dinner and lounging around in the late night hours laughing and talking that create the lasting memories of a vacation. This unique and artistically appointed home, designed by its architect owners, provided the perfect backdrop. Sparkling bathrooms and fabulous sun splashed kitchen, dining, and living room areas flow into one another creating a feeling of space and coziness all at once. The lovely garden, perfect for pouring over maps and guides during long breakfasts and again at dusk for wine and cheese, were some of the sweetest hours we spent in this very special house you could call your home for your next vacation. While tucked into a serene and quiet corner of the Northeast Harbor neighborhood, a three minute stroll into the quaint town center brings you to antique stores, gourmet baked goods, country style general store, an unusual bookstore filled with vintage literature and first editions, weekly Harbor farmer's market, and many other surprising stops along the way. Don't miss an opportunity to stay in this home, a secret jewel, that can make it all possible.
