About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

The apartment (60 square metre/600 sq feet) is comprised of recently remodeled suite of rooms, with a private outdoor patio, in a 15th century medieval building. The suite is located within the remnants of the ancient walls of the medieval town centre.

We have made every effort to maintain the antiquity of this charming one bedroom unit during renovation. In the same complex we also have a studio apartment on the ground floor for rent, please ask us for further information about our other three two bedrooms apartments. Modern bathroom, kitchen and living room make the unit an ideal place to relax while exploring the region. The apartment is rented on either a weekly basis or for a two night minimum stay.

While staying with us you will be a short walk to several bakeries, butcher shops, bars, restaurants and other amenities all within the medieval town centre. In addition to wine tasting and sightseeing you can spend your days walking or cycling the many trails in the area the best of which run along the Canal Lateral à La Loire. There is also the opportunity to travel down the Loire by kayak or canoe.

La Charité-sur-Loire is an hour and 45 minutes south of Paris. The owners live a two minute walk from the unit and are always on hand to answer any of your questions or if you need help with your French. Please see our website for more information of activities in the area.

About Byron and Kelly Harker

Hello, we are Byron and Kelly Harker from Vancouver on the West Coast of Canada. We have had the opportunity to travel widely over the years, and have always enjoyed returning to France. In 2003 we decided to sell our home in Vancouver and move to France. We discovered the delightful town of La Charité-sur-Loire in Burgundy and immediately fell in love with the town and the area. In 2004 we opened the first of our vacation rentals and currently have five such rentals in the centre of this medieval town. We enjoy the many festivals in town and the area throughout the year. We are close enough to Paris to 'pop up' for the day. We enjoy sharing our love of the area with our guests from all over the world.

What makes this apartment unique

La Charité-sur-Loire is south of the rain and north of the heat and as a result has very enjoyable weather. Our vacation rentals are in the centre of town and you are able to walk out your front door and enjoy the many bakeries, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. The Loire River is two blocks away and it has lovely beaches and walking paths along the riverbank. There is canoeing and kayaking on the river. We are close the wine areas of Sancerre and Pouilly-sur-Loire where you can meet the wine makers and enjoy tasting their wonderful wines. The castles of the Loire Valley are a two hour drive from us and make an enjoyable day trip. La Charité-sur-Loire is becoming an art, book and music cultural centre and as such there are many festivals throughout the year.

Well restored character "gite" in delightful town

  • 5 of 5

The Meneau suite was charming and being up a winding staircase in an old tower, up to the second floor meant it had lots of light in a tightly packed older section of La Charite. We particularly enjoyed the warm October sunshine on the wee terrace; a delightful place to poignantly reflect upon the end of summer's sunshine and the coming of shorter days.

We thoroughly enjoyed visiting with friends in a neighbouring gite and exploring the mellow countryside in full grape-harvest action🍷😀

Many thanks Kelly and Byron for planting Canadian hearts in the soul of France🇨🇦🇫🇷

Charming, Comfortable, Convenient

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is exceptional in many ways. From the moment we stepped into the winding staircase in the tower we were reminded of the quality and care Byron and Kelly have put into the renovation of a 16th century property. The photos show the exposed beams, natural stone walls and fireplaces, antique furniture, flowers and little touches of France everywhere. The terrace is very private and just delightful any time of day.

The furnishings and amenities are modern, comfortable, and generous. Extras include: a dishwasher and washing machine. excellent selection of cable channels, books, DVDs, and a binder full of sightseeing, dining and shopping tips from the hosts’ 14 years of experience.

Location also could not be better: very quiet but only 5 minutes’ walk from good shopping, festival venues, and the town’s magnificent priory and bookstores. Byron and Kelly could not have been better hosts. They met us at the train station, carried bags up the stairs, and put a bottle of wine in the fridge.

Byron and Kelly have five self-contained apartments, different sizes, all together in the town center. There is no better place to stay in La Charite.

We stayed here for a Week in August and loved it. The apartment is really lovely and well equipped with Byron and Kelly being the perfect hosts. La Charite is a great town with lots to do and see and the surrounding area is also beautiful. I would recommend this apartment to everyone.

Spacious character apartment in the centre of town yet quiet

  • 5 of 5

Kelly and Byron made us very welcome meeting and returning us to the station. They made great suggestions about where to visit which were much appreciated. The apartment is lovely, very well equipped with everything we needed. The outdoor patio was an added bonus, as were their bikes which we hired. If we are ever in La Charite again we would definitely stay here.

Favourite accommodation in France

  • 5 of 5

We were lucky to spend a week in the beautifully decorated, reasonably priced Meneau Suite (Seyr Vacations). This was our first trip to France. We spent 5 days in Paris before heading south to this charming medieval town. We were able to gear down after a busy time in Paris and really experience life in a small town. Our hosts Kelly and Byron where able to provide us with information regarding the town and surrounding area. Byron took us on a delightful tour of the town providing us with historical detail and also information on the town's many amenities. This location is ideal. We were walking distance to the main street of the town which had 2 bakeries, restaurants, patisserie, etc., plus, there is a large supermarket just on the edge of town (5 min drive). The suite's kitchen was fully equipped. The suite also had a separate bedroom with a beautiful bathroom, a great shower, washing machine etc., We also had our own private balcony. We were so impressed that we would like to return with friends.." Seyr Vacations" have other suites, so next time, we would travel with friends and we could each rent a suite. Also, one can take the train from Paris and then rent a car from this location. This town makes a great base - there is so much to see in the surrounding area. We did quite a few day trips from this location and spent many hours just wondering around the town. There is a market in the main square on Saturdays. It was a wonderful experience. Many thanks to Byron and Kelly.

Perfect as usual

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Meneau apartment for one week in mid July and found everything to be perfect. The place will keep you cool in hot weather (with the adjunct of a cooler column appliance in case it's really scorching!) and warm during the occasional cool spell. The kitchen is fully equipped with all the crockery, glasses, utensiles one needs and everything is tastefully designed. The bedroom is so quiet and peaceful and the little terrace is perfect for a drink, tea or meals. The stairs in the tower to accede to the apartment give the distinct impression that you are lodging in a small castle. We would definitely return and stay, hopefully for a longer period. A week goes by quickly in La Charité. This is the second year we have stayed in Kelly and Byron's properties and they do a tremendous job not only in offering comfortable accomodations, but in restoring and maintaining the town's heritage. Not to forget the warm welcome and their availability in case there are any questions.
