For many years I have worked as an artist/sculptor...designing elements for the home. And I have managed property rentals for over 25 years. We spend a few weeks each year enjoying our island retreat and getting recharged.
Dian Weeks purchased this cottage in 1987
We looked for a special location for over 4 years until 1987... when we finally found our perfect island retreat. We built a custom pole house(s) and appointed it with Indonesian/Asian furnishings from our travels and extensive tropical landscaping from local farmers. For years we have shared the guest house with travellers from all over the world...with many rave reviews.
This is a very unique, exclusive area...located about 10 minutes north of Kaneohe, in an area called Waikane which means 'Water of the Gods'. It's private; has a serene country feel embellished with gorgeous tropical vegetation & fruit trees. Being embraced by the Koolau Mountains and enchanting views of Kaneohe Bay...this property is like no other. Great location...10 minutes to Kaneohe town; 20 minutes to Honolulu & Kailua; 40 minutes to the NorthShore. And close to beautiful beaches all along the coast.
Welcome!! Hope you have a fabulous stay at our beautiful island home! Please leave us a comment about your experience here in Kaneohe...we appreciate your thoughts and kind consideration of our bayside retreat.
Aloha & mahalo!
My husband and I stayed at this lovely cottage in September 2016. The location is great - in the peaceful and non touristy countryside of Oahu - but quite convenient at the same time. It takes about 30 min to Honolulu and a bit less to Kailua. 45 min to Hanauma Bay. Nice to have the ocean so close to the house even if you cannot swim there. Beautiful garden and spacious house - very well equipped kitchen and nicely decorated. We also used the snorkel gear and boogie boards, which was fine. It was the type of property we hoped it would be and perfect for a peaceful and nature-friendly holiday in Hawaii :) We would go back to this cottage if we have a chance to go back to Oahu :)
We stayed 5 days at Kaneohe Bayside Country Cottage and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The cottage is very private and well appointed with all the amenities we needed. It was quite warm but the lanai usually provided a break from the heat. The location was ideal for us. Off the road but near many fine eating establishments. The cottage is aging a bit and could use a bit of upgrading. The ceiling in the loft is quite low and we bumped our heads a few times. Overall we enjoyed our stay very much.
My husband and I enjoyed five nights at tihs lovely cottage loft in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu in celebration of our twentieth wedding anniversary! From the moment I set eyes on it, I knew it was exactly what I had hoped for. Exposed wood beams; a cabin-like experienc;. Rustic Beauty! It is just steps to the bay along a row of palms that seems straight out of a commercial for Hawaiian bliss! The isle that used to be called "Chinaman's Hat" is directly in the distance. We enjoyed a few moonlit evenings watching the reflection of the moon on the bay throught the palms. It was magical.
We loved the beautiful bird calls every morning (early though they were) and the resident rooster, hens and chicks were adorable. I didn't mind the rooster crowing. It wasn't often, and we kept a fan going at night which drowned out any unwanted noise. We also had a friendly and frightened gekko who popped his head out to see us each evening, but each time I got up to take a closer look, he scrambled into the rafters.
The cottage is located off the main road going through Kaneohe, but behind a tall fence and down a gravel road, so the road noise is barely heard. It is a great spot for expolration of both North and South shores. (The East Shore is lush, green and gorgeous!!!) The cottage is located behind another cottage which is closer to the bay. The two cottages are separated by a row of large tropical plants, so it feels very private and secluded. The surrounding area is beautiful with green grass, banana trees, tropical plants etc.
Some snorkel gear (but in disrepair). Maybe it could be used, but we just rented ours. We were concerned about water getting in our eyes, noses etc. And the fins were torn in places. I would advise buying and bringing snorkel gear if you are going more than once. Renting it can cost $20. per person per day.
Boogie Boards (but again, in disrepair). One was broken. We didn't use them.
All general kitchen supplies which was great.
Washer & Dryer
Fans to keep cool (one was broken, but there were plenty of others). No AC
Hand Soap, Dish soap, Washing Detergent, Shampoo (No conditioner)
All in all the place was amazing! I would come back in a second. Highly recommended if you are looking for rustic, romantic charm!
We had a nice week at this cottage. The house has an overall good vibe. The kitchen is very well equipped, there is even a garlic press! The bathroom is spacious enough that it wasn't a problem for our somewhat large party to share.
The deck is nice to sit on, although the view to the water is somewhat obstructed by the enormous palms.
We walked down to watch the sunrise by the water almost every morning, which was beautiful. Just wish the beach was cleaner and would be able to swim there or have a place to sit by the water.
The house is comfortable and there is good air circulation so that it never gets too hot inside. There is a lack of privacy upstairs due to the fact that there are no doors for the 'bedrooms', just one sheet to hang for some privacy. One bedroom is large, with a little sitting area and skylight, walk in closet, the other is much smaller with a double bed and dresser, etc.
You will definitely need a car to get to this place and to get around. The neighborhood is not the greatest, and it's kind of far from everything, but the compound itself is very nice and private. If you are looking to get away from Waikiki, or any type of city life, than this is the place. If you want to be in the middle of the action, you will need to go closer to Honolulu.
The Buddhist temple is really close and a must see! Chinaman's hat is in your view, that beach is about 5 min up the road.
My wife and I have stayed in this paradisiacal cottage several times over the years and each stay has been more idyllic than the previous. The location cannot be beat! The views from the house, lanai, and shore front are picture postcard perfect. The house is super-comfortable, very quiet, and it is easy to make oneself at home right away. Dian is the best! Everything was clean and functional and she explained everything clearly.
The nearest swimming beach is just a 5-minute drive. In our six days, we took scenic drives to the astonishing North Shore to watch crazed surfers on monster waves, we swam and snorkeled at the world famous beaches at Kailua, Lanikai, Ala Moana, and yes … Waikiki too, even caught this year’s Jazz Grammy winners at the Blue Note Hawaii. The house is so well situated, that all these drives were easy and it was always a pleasure to get “back to our little grass shack.” The kitchen is great and, as much as we enjoy restaurants, nothing beats dining here. We cooked all but one meal at home. We loved staying in the cottage so much that we just hung around every morning, never doing our tourist adventuring until afternoon.
We can’t wait to come back again!
Our 6 nights stay was mostly positive. Great instructions and communication from the owner. It’s a great open space cottage. In a very quiet and green location. You definitely need a car to get around. Kitchen is well stocked (we shopped at Costco). Huge porch/patio with plenty of seating and relaxing hammock to enjoy.
The only huge complain we had is about sleeping arrangements. This cottage is no good for two couples (as we were). Two bedrooms on the second floor are completely open concept and face the first floor (no walls or doors). You basically walk thru the “master” bedroom to get to the tiny second bedroom. Also, mattresses need to be replaced ASAP! Especially in the smaller double bed, it’s an absolute torture for a couple to sleep on this mattress.
This cottage is great for a single couple, or a family with small kid(s), but not for two couples!
This private retreat is located on the north end of Kaneohe Bay, about 7 miles north of Kaneohe, in an exclusive area known as Waikane-'Water of the Gods' ...on the Windward side of Oahu. Watch the sun rise over the Bay and Chinaman's Hat, a small island off the shore. Just a few miles north is the beautiful Kualoa Beach Park for swimming and hiking, and Kualoa Ranch where there's horseback riding and special events. Kailua Beach and Lanikai are approx. 25 minutes south; NorthShore and Waimea Bay are approx. 40 minutes north; Honolulu is about 20 minutes southwest.
