About Amy Johnson

Amy & Carl live just down the road from the Pout House with their dogs, Cinderella and Bee, and a cat, Nyenne ("Kitty" for short). Cinderella is disabled and usually walks on three legs, but is a happy, elderly girl. Carl and I usually spend our days at the knit shop up the hill, Kniticality, and are there to answer your questions or help you find your way around the area.

Amy Johnson purchased this cottage in 1942

Why Amy Johnson chose Asheville Area

The acreage where the Pout House resides has been in Carl's family since 1942. Carl began visiting here when he was 2 years old, coming up summers with his grandparents, parents and siblings. Carl and Amy purchased several family shares to combine into this property for everyone to love. Our wish is that it brings joy and healing to those who visit as it has to us for generations.

What makes this cottage unique

There is a peace here that goes right in to your heart. Carl loves the magnificent views and the breezes. Amy likes that the property is so easy to access from major roads, but still retains the quiet unspoiled feel of deep woods. Both of us just enjoy watching the trees, wading the streams, seeing the wildlife, and wandering the trails with Cinderella and Bee as companions and as guides.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Couldn't ask for a better mountain retreat. Stayed 2 days, brought our own groceries, never left the property. Can't wait to come back.

lackluster trailer

  • 2 of 5

The property was nice and secluded but the "cabin" was actually a really tiny lopsided trailer. Our bed was slanted and it was difficult to walk the back "hallway " without bumping into a wall. The kids bedroom did not have a door which was problematic since it was right next to the front door and we were hanging out on the porch after they went to bed. So, we had to close their windows and whisper while we were outside and sneak past their door when we went inside. The only fan/AC was in the living area so the bedrooms were stuffy even thought the temp outside was great. The kitchen was tiny and unequipped. There wasn't even a colander. The stove was gas and stunk up the place. Overall this place is just inadequate for 4-5 people. There isn't enough seating in the living area to watch TV, play games or eat. There is seating on the porch was it wasn't lit well.

Quaint cabin perfect for one or two couples

  • 5 of 5

Amy was a great host and welcomed us warmly. The cabin was better than expected with everything needed for a good stay. Nothing really we needed to bring except our own food. Highly recommend!

Be aware of unjustified fees

  • 2 of 5

The place is ok, nothing spectacular. We would have been happy with our stay if we weren't charged unexpected fees that we greatly disagree with. The owners were barely in touch with us. They charged us a pet fee but then charged us for fur and scratches that were NOT from us. We were barely there and our dogs were never inside except to sleep. Be careful of extra fees and lack of communication. The place is decent but it's on a small piece of property with many steep cliffs surrounding it. There is also a poor dog with an injured leg that roams the area. It's very sad to see.

Owner's Response: The pet fee is part of the listing, and is right there for everyone to see. After arriving with the dogs, this guest was asked to pay the pet fee and our request was ignored. It is easy to say the animals were never inside, but the evidence left behind after this guest's stay required that we hire an outside cleaner to come in and perform costly deep cleaning in the cottage and to the furnishings. We charged this guest 50% of the cost of the cleaning, which under the circumstances was more than fair. There was permanent damage to the floor, which was newly installed this year, and while we chalked the cost of floor repair up to "tuition into the school of life" we have now decided to no longer accept pets in our cottage.

Cozy getaway in a great private location, yet minutes to the highway

  • 4 of 5

This rental had all the amenities you could ask for. It was small, but included all the necessities for a comfortable stay. The hot tub on the front porch is a great perk, especially after spending the day hiking in the mountains. If you're looking for a quiet place off the beaten path, yet with easy access to Asheville, Hendersonville, Chimney Rock, etc., this is a great spot. The downtown of Saluda is also adorable and a quaint spot to explore!

Relaxing mountain retreat!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Pout House! So much so we plan to rebook when it comes time to take the kids for a mountain vaction. The owners have went above and beyond stocking this cabin with little things that make it feel like home away from home. Right down from filters and sugar for you coffee to extra towels for your wet shoes or dog. Peaceful and relaxing is the only way I can describe it. My husband kept asking me if I wanted to go out sat night after our Biltmore tour but I just wanted to hang out at the cabin! Hopefully next time I can find the waterfalls lol
