Welcome to the Plover Retreat, a cozy cabin in Grand Marais. Our cute two bedroom plus sleeping porch cabin, is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature. Enjoy quality bedding and towels as you 'rough it' in our cute cabin. Though only a few minutes from town, our cabin and its surrounding yard feel secluded and private. Enjoy the first cup of coffee in the morning on our deck and watch the humming birds zip around looking for food. Lazy, quiet days lend themselves to reading a book or putting together a puzzle on the enclosed porch while still getting to enjoy the scene outside.
Just a short walk from our property is the beach access for one of Lake Superiors prettiest spots. Sugary sand and shallow water for swimming meet up with the mouth of the Sucker River; the perfect spot to spend an afternoon.
As the day wears on and night fall begins, be sure to enjoy a small camp fire under the stars. Roast some marsh mellows, sing songs or tell a few tales of times gone by. Reconnect with family and friends and enjoy a slower paced life on vacation with us.

We are nature lovers and enjoy the majesty of lake superior. In winter the UP has snow and we like to x-ctry ski.
The Owner purchased this cabin in 1991
When I came down the hill into town the first time back in the early 80's, I said to myself, 'I gotta get a place here' GM is 'nature in abundance.'
The sound of the lake, to hear the waves crashing on shore
It was a great stay. The cabin is well equipped with all you would need for your stay. The location is a few minutes from the shore and it was great.
The only difficulty was actually finding the cabin as there was no sign at the entrance and we spent quite some time going back and forth on the road trying to find it. Luckly we took a chance and just entered a driveway to find it. But no issues otherwise.
Had a fantastic stay at Plover Retreat this weekend while exploring the UP. It was very clean and well taken care of. The details are thought out, you can tell. The kitchen had every gadget I needed, even a hand mixer! The bath towels were nice, the mattress was comfortable (I was by myself on a solo retreat). I loved the porch and the fire pit. I couldn't easily find my way down to the beach so I missed out on that but I had so much fun exploring the Taquomonon Falls, Pictured Rocks and driving H-58 that it didn't phase me. I later saw in the welcome book to go to Ellen Street for the public beach access but never did. Next time! I highly recommend Plover Retreat to anyone that wants to be centrally located for the popular sights and tourist attractions in the UP. The people are nice in town, too. Make sure you bring fresh groceries if you plan to cook. The local store has very limited selections and it's quite a ways to get to a bigger supermarket. If you plan to eat in Grand Marais at the end of your day, the Brewery is really the only place that serves food after 8 or so. I never made it to the West Bay Diner but I heard it's pretty good.
Loved Plover Retreat! The cabin was lovely, and Nikki was very helpful. We definitely appreciated all the details throughout the space, which gave us ideas for our future cabin. Comfy beds, plenty of activities, and great books. Walking distance to town and the beach. Grand Marais was our home-base for exploring the UP. We will definitely be back as we had an incredible experience, and now has significant memories of fun, adventure, and an engagement! Beautiful trees and fun "least chipmunks"abound. Only thing I would recommend is bringing in groceries from a larger town of vegetarian!
We stayed here last summer and already booked again for summer 2015. This is a nice cottage, comfortable for 5, very clean with nice furnishings and decorations. Beach access is via a path. It is a nice location for enjoying Grand Marais, Pictured Rocks and other areas in the U.P. We have been coming up for a number of years, and this cabin is our favorite of all those in which we stayed.
When we started to plan this year's trip to the US which had to include a visit with old friends on Douglas Lake, south of the Mackinaw bridge, we realized that this would be a chance to spend some days on the UP, an area which was totally unknown to us Swiss. Grand Marais with its proximity to the Pictured Rock National Lakeshore, and also not too far from the Seney National Wildlife Refuge, was soon the choice. Then we found the description of Plover Retreat in the internet and thought: That's it. How right we were. Rental agreement and payment from overseas functioned with the kind support by the local manager. Her directions by e-mail how to drive to the cabin helped us to find it without any problem on a sunny late afternoon and to settle there with ease.
It was the start of a marvelous week in which we enjoyed to explore the beautiful and fascinating landscape on Lake Superior by hiking, to learn about the local history and to be at leisure in this wonderful cabin. Its rustic and carefully decorated wooden interior is well arranged and equipped with everything what is needed for a real 'retreat'. It was so peaceful to sit back in one of the comfortable armchairs and to page through the botany and wildlife books from the little cupboard. Even the Webster's rendered its service when we were lost with an American term. In town, we met friendly people who gave us many interesting information about passed days and everyday life in this region.
If Plover Retreat wasn't so far away from home we would come back very soon to this neat spot. Well, who knows? A big 'thank you' to the owners for making Plover Retreat available for rent and to the local manager for her perfect administrative Service.
This was my second stay at this cabin, and it wonderful. Fully stocked with all the odds and ends necessary for a week away from real life, all we had to do was bring in food and paper products. Unfortunately, we picked the wrong time to visit, as Lake Superior was still full of ice (meaning canceled sight seeing cruises), the locals were extremely welcoming, friendly, and more than willing to share alternate sights and attractions. This cabin and its location is perfect for people who love nature and want to get away from hectic life. I look forward to future vacations and time-outs from real life in this area and highly recommend Plover retreat. The manager for this property was also very helpful, reliable, and well informed, smoothing the rental process for us and making it as easy as can be. Thank you for a wonderful experience!
