Lakefront Home with Spectacular View

Bedrooms 4
Space 1,500 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

Rent this entire two story duplex located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula just 20 minutes west of St. Ignace (near Brevort). This home offers a spectacular view of Lake Michigan's north shore. There is a small sandy shore in front of the duplex (smaller every year thanks to erosion!) but beaches are accessible all along US2.

This duplex is ideal for large families, or 2 small families, and offers a 2 bedroom 1st floor (1 Queen, 1 Full) with spacious living room w/sofa, comfortably sleeping up to 4 people. The second floor has 2 bedrooms (both Queen) and a spacious kitchen/living room w/Futon and will comfortably sleep up to 6. The upstairs and downstairs have separate entrances, offering both the kids and adults the privacy they desire.

The duplex is easy to get to, located on West US 2, just 20 minutes from the Mackinac Bridge. The property is about 100 ft. back from the 2 lane highway. The highway runs adjacent to the beach, and is between the duplex and the beach.

Hiking: The property abuts a vast area of state and federal forest land and offers great wilderness hiking including Switchback Ridge which is a large inland dune just 1/2 mile away. There are some majestic views from that ridge line! As well, the popular North Country Trail that stretches from New York to North Dakota can be picked up just a few miles away. There are a network of trails and 2 tracks leading through the woods so be sure to bring your compass if you plan to do any adventuring.

Nearby Attractions: Nearby attractions include Mackinac Island (a ferry ride from St. Ignace), Tahquamenon Falls (1 Hr.), Whitefish Point (1 Hr.) the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie (1 Hr.). Pictured Rocks is about 2+1/2 Hrs away, but it is worth it! You can take the boat tour (though its a bit pricey) or just take in the land lover's view for free at Miners Castle. It's breath taking. If you go, don't forget to stop and stick your toes in the sand at beautiful Miners Beach - you'll see it through the woods from the lookout at Miners Castle. P.S. Don't expect a man made castle at the lookout, but it's no less impressive!

If you enjoy some occasional gambling, there are casinos in many of the 'major' cities of the UP.

If you just like souvenier shopping and tasting the flavors of the local cuisine, St. Ignace will have what you are looking for.

Fishing: Rent a boat or canoe (or drop in your own) in nearby Big Brevort Lake to work on a a fresh fish dinner (perch, pike, walleye, bass & panfish) for the evening. Alternately, charter a fishing boat out of St. Ignace and try your luck in the waters of Lake Michigan or Lake Huron.

About Jason Vallier

I am very, very happy

Jason Vallier purchased this house in 2002

Why Jason Vallier chose Michigan

Fresh water, beautiful scenery out your front window, lot's of woods & hiking trails.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Jason -- We had a marvelous time!!! Love the weather you had waiting for us. We never even needed a sweatshirt. We were able to do all the main things we had planned to do--just couldn't squeeze anything else in. The Falls were beautiful, as always. The kids were able to go swimming in Lake Superior without freezing to death---and we adults were able to collect some stones to bring back for our gardens & projects. We took the Vesper Cruise

on Sunday night out under the bridge and then walked across it on Mon. AM. They cancelled the walk about 11:15 due to wind but we had walked it and were back on the St. Ignace side before that. We went back to the cottage/house and had a "left-over lunch" which was really pretty good. We

were out by 2 pm. Indeed--we will recommend it to others. Don't have many down here that would be interested but will keep it in mind for any of our friends up "norther".

We tried to leave it in good shape and easy for the cleaning crew to follow-up. I think I goofed by putting the keys back in the locks. Will do better next time. Speaking of next time--I think (at this point in time)

that we would be interested in renting it again next year for about the same time if it will be available. You can let us know.

Thanks again. Faith

Couldn't Ask for a Better Place

  • 5 of 5

I was with the group that rented from June 21st - 28th, 2008 and I can't say enough how much I loved the place. Everything was in working order, with some very new looking appliances, and all very clean.

The view was terrific, and once I figured out the stone stairs down to the beach I spent about as much time as I could out there walking, sitting, reading. The beach was probably my favorite part of the whole trip.

It was nice being a bit away from the main tourist areas, but close enough that it was only a 15-20min drive to get into town to catch the ferry over to the island. The location was a perfect balance really.

I would, without a doubt, recommend the condo to friends or family looking for a great, affordable getaway spot in MI. I definitely hope to come back next year.

Great place to lay your head down after exhausting sight seeing for night.

  • 5 of 5

Waking up to a view of Lake Michigan and a sunset over Lake Michigan are wonderful sights.

If you have never experienced swimming along US 2 you should make this a vacation spot to rent.

Had a couple of pasties during the week and great food (and ice cream of course ) in St Ignace and Mackinaw City. Garlyn zoo is nice attraction nearby as well as hiking in woods behind cottage. We did a day trip to to Sault Saint Marie locks a must if you have never been there.

Jason was always accessible for any questions .

Thanks for the use of your place Jason.

Relax Time

  • 5 of 5

Our vacation included two families and this was a perfect fit. The owner was very helpful and pleasant to talk with. The house was clean and well stocked with the necessities. The view of the lake in front of the house is gorgeous and the hiking behind the house is fantastic. There is little beach area left directly across the street but just a short drive down the road there was a sandy beach with shallow waters for about 200 feet out into the lake, perfect for our younger children. The charcoal grill came in handy for dinners and the fire pit was in full blaze every night. Sunsets were beautiful and the starry skies at night ...amazing. Traffic is heavy during the day but we were not home that much then and it does lighten up in the evenings. This place is definitely on our list of good places! Thanks Jason for sharing your home!

Great view, wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

The owner was great, he called us the day we arrived to make sure everyone had gotten there safely. The duplex worked out great for 2 families. The house has a breathtaking view of the lake from the upper and lower main living areas. The microwave and the sofa on the lower level could use replacement. The road can be busy during the day, but there is little traffic in the evening. We watched the beautiful sunset every night. Overall a great value. We will be going back again.

My review for this property

  • 3 of 5

The owner is very helpful and responsive about the property informations. He provoided the correct and specific informations about the property and its location.

I would say overall property is an average.

Couple things about the property:

1. The living room carpet is not clean. Owner should put the new carpet.

2. The appliances and furnitures are old and not matched with each other.

3. All the door locks are very old and needs to be replaced.

4. The bugs can easily come inside into the kitchen because there is a gap in exhaust fan (on the wall) in kichen.

5. The second floor is wooden floor and its clean and has a good view from the window.

6. Both bathrooms are clean.

7. If you need anything you need to drive 20 mins. which is St. Ignace. There are gas stations, foods and etc.

8. Walking distance is a beach.

9. One side of a bridge is a Mackinaw city and other side is a St. Ignace. You can take ferry to anyside and goto Macknic Island.

10. On Island, there is a horse ride and bike ride to see all.

11. Ofcourse, lots of good fudge places.

Lovely view, big yard, and close to lots of attractions

  • 4 of 5

Our vacation in St. Ignace was a good one. The duplex was large enough for our big family. We all enjoyed the big yard and having a campfire every night with smores. Seeing Lake Michigan in our front yard was wonderful. The traffic on the highway right out front was heavy and drowned out any wave sounds though.

We took day trips to Mackinaw Island, Tahquamanon Falls, and the Soo Locks. We went to the beach as well a couple times. The beaches near the duplex were great. The beach right in front has a hazardous rock "staircase" - we would recommend driving down a bit to a better beach. St. Ignace was a nice town to hang out in as well - the library was very kid friendly and the Huron Boardwalk was nice for kids and adults.

The stairs leading up to the second floor were a bit precarious - we would not recommend very young children or elderly using the second floor. The second floor did provide a wall of windows looking out onto Lake Michigan and was a very nice place to watch the waves. The second floor has been updated with wood-laminate flooring and is nice and bright.

All in all, we had a great family vacation and would recommend the area!

Car: necessary

The property borders Lake Superior State Forest land. The setting is serene, and the view out the front windows of either the upstaris or downstairs are spectacular. There are a network of trails in both the State and nearby Federal forest land. Switchback Ridge hiking trail runs along a steep inland dune (pick it up approx 1/2 mile behind the duplex) and offers a scenic view across the upper peninsula. You can also see across Lake Michigan to the lower peninsula on a clear day. This is a great place to escape from it all, while still being in close range to some of the upper penninsula's most popular attractions.
