About Paul and Jean Kirchner

We are retired administrators from Munson Healthcare and Michigan Public Schools. Our three sons and their families enjoy the great outdoors and playing Bluegrass Music throughout Michigan and Massachusetts. We have owned, enjoyed and improved this cottage since 1987. It was our home full time for more than a year while we were permanently relocating to the Traverse City area. The cottage has lovingly been updated every year.

Paul and Jean Kirchner purchased this cottage in 1987

Why Paul and Jean Kirchner chose South Boardman

We found this breathtakingly beautiful log cottage with a perfect setting on a non-motor lake while we were vacationing "up north" in early 1987. Swimming was a top request for our boys. They also loved fishing and catching turtles. It was safe for our kids when they were growing up and offered so many opportunities for area exploration and was close enough to Traverse City so we could enjoy all the opportunities in the entire area. It offered a very easy access to Traverse City without enduring the traffic of some of the major roads.

What makes this cottage unique

This is a quiet repose from the summer busy schedule in Traverse City, while easily accessible via paved county roads. It is also uniquely accessible to Cherry Capital Airport which is served by at least 3 major airlines. It also puts Mackinac Island and the Mackinac Bridge an easy day trip away. [100 miles]. The sleepy village of Alden is also a personal favorite. A day trip to Torch Lake and Elk Rapids is also delightful. There is great canoeing on the Manistee River or the Boardman River within 10 miles.

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a delightfully beautiful cottage. We found everything one could possible need. The cottage has many family heirlooms decorating the inside, but also has all the modern amenities one would expect at a five star hotel. Very relaxing! We will be back.

Picture Perfect Cabin getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We just loved this cozy cabin. It is a gem! The views of the lake are beautiful from inside and out. When it rained, you could hear it on the roof. So peaceful! The place had everything to cook and serve with and more. We made dinner on Halloween, It snowed...while the fire burned in the fireplace. Later we soaked in the hot tub. All you could hear was the sound of snow coming down. Then off to bed in the cozy flannel bedding. We never slept so good on vacation. We made three dinners in and most breakfasts. It was fun to cook there. There are tasty dining options locally, we enjoyed fife Lake Inn, Trout town grille in Kalkaska. We Had adventures in Alden, shopping, wine tasting, and Lunch at the Alden bar and Grill. We went up to harbor springs for a day to tour the Tunnel of Trees. Just stunning, the colors were beautiful, let alone the homes with the views of the lake. And of course went to Traverse city for a couple of dinners and lunches - our favorites . . . the franklin, Stella Tratoria, Mical, Poppycocks, and Alliance! TC has it all... Paul and Jean were always available if you had questions, but we didn't have any...it was great! We were visited by a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers, they were huge, looked like Woody, but pecked like a jack hammer...we hope to visit them again!

Owner's Response: William and Christina. We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit just like we do. It’s a warm and special cabin in a less discovered area. The beautiful woodpeckers are about to get their own giant suet cake 🎂!!! Unfortunately they do serious damage to log cabins. 😳. 🍁🍂🏡👍. Thanks for the heads up on the birds!!! We hope you come and visit us again. Paul and Jean Kirchner.

Honeymoon 2017

  • 5 of 5

We spent our honeymoon here and had a blast! We fished, hiked, and enjoyed time by the fire. We liked how close to traverse city the cabin was. We drove into the downtown area one day for some shopping and dining. The cabin is in great shape and had everything we could have needed!

Perfect location, wonderful atmosphere

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful secluded getaway just a short 35 minute drive from the excitement of downtown traverse city.

The owners are easily accessible and very friendly. Jean even called to make sure we were enjoying our stay and to see if we needed anything (which we didn't because just about anything you need is already at the cabin).

We enjoyed coffee on the dock in the mornings as the mist rolled off the lake and went off on our adventures during the day. Then it was back to the cabin for hot tub and bonfires.

Just a wonderful stay. I would recommend this cabin for a girls weekend, family outing or a romantic getaway....it suits all.

Thank you Paul and Jean

Beautiful "Up North" Experience!

  • 5 of 5

We are a senior couple and we spent two weeks at this Perch Lake cabin. We loved it! My husband used the rowboat nearly everyday to fish. He caught enough pan fish for a great fish dinner and also caught a large bass he released. The cottage was cozy, well maintained and provided everything we needed. We loved wifi and cable tv for relaxing evenings! Since we take day adventures we love the location. Easy to go to Travese City, kayaking on AuSable, Sand Dunes area, state parks, and we even drove to Mackinaw easily. Hot tub, swimming, fireplace, fire pit, lake toys..all provide fun if one prefers to stay put. Owners are professional but also friendly and helpful. We loved this place!

Owner's Response: We are happy you found us and had the chance to experience our up north getaway all the way from Texas. It sounds like your husband found the knack for catching fish in Perch Lake. Thanks for sharing your review. We hope you come and visit us again. The Kirchner's.

Cozy get away

  • 5 of 5

Love this cabin . It's roomy enough for several people to enjoy but I love it for just the two of us.

It has all the amenities of a home away from home and then some. The quietness of the lake which one can kayak, canoe, swim or fish is very appealing. Comfortable sleeping and a great hot tub for unwinding in those cool evenings too.

We also are close enough to do a variety of day trips out on the peninsulas and neighboring towns for shopping, movies, restaurants, wine tastings and just gorgeous sightseeing.

We will definitely come back to enjoy again.
