About Paul and Jean Kirchner

We are retired administrators from Munson Healthcare and Michigan Public Schools. Our three sons and their families enjoy the great outdoors and playing Bluegrass Music throughout Michigan and Massachusetts. We have owned, enjoyed and improved this cottage since 1987. It was our home full time for more than a year while we were permanently relocating to the Traverse City area. We have lovingly updated the cottage every year.

Paul and Jean Kirchner purchased this cottage in 1987

Why Paul and Jean Kirchner chose Michigan

We found this breathtakingly beautiful log cottage with a perfect setting on a non-motor lake while we were vacationing "up north" in early 1987. Swimming was a top request for our boys. They also loved fishing and catching turtles. It was safe for our kids when they were growing up and offered so many opportunities for area exploration and was close enough to Traverse City so we could enjoy all the opportunities in the entire area. It offered a very easy access to Traverse City without enduring the traffic of some of the major roads.

What makes this cottage unique

This is a quiet repose from the summer busy schedule in Traverse City, while easily accessible via paved county roads. It is also uniquely accessible to Cherry Capital Airport which is served by at least 3 major airlines. It also puts Mackinac Island and the Mackinac Bridge an easy day trip away. [100 miles]. The sleepy village of Alden is also a personal favorite. A day trip to Torch Lake and Elk Rapids is also delightful. There is great canoeing on the Manistee River or the Boardman River within 10 miles.

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a delightfully beautiful cottage. We found everything one could possible need. The cottage has many family heirlooms decorating the inside, but also has all the modern amenities one would expect at a five star hotel. Very relaxing! We will be back.

Just what we hoped for!

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved this cottage last summer. Six of us found everything we were looking for. From the time we walked in the front door we felt welcomed by the warm log walls and wood floors plus the stone fireplace. My husband and I found the hot tub our relax place with a cup of coffee listening to birds in the early morning. Our sons fished and caught many turtles. The girls enjoyed the paddle boat and canoe. When it rained one day we found time to play games and enjoy family time like we never take time for at home. With four kids the washer and dryer were very convenient. We have stayed at many cottages, but this one tops our favorite list. We will be back!

Owner's Response: We are very pleased that you enjoyed our log cottage. We have had many years of family gatherings at the cottage and lived their full time for a few years ourselves. It is our pleasure to share it with enthusiastic renters who like the unique log home setting on a no gas motor lake. We hope you return soon. Paul and Jean

A wonderful getaway

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is absolutely wonderful. It's beautiful inside and out. Everything in the cabin is wonderful quality and shows great personality. The lakefront and dock are amazing - it's a gorgeous view morning and evening, and perfect for boating or fishing. The location is great for accessing all the wonderful sights in and around Traverse City and Mackinac Island, but the cabin was so wonderful we were happy to spend several days just enjoying Perch Lake. Paul and Jean are really lovely and very easy to work with - super fast and responsive. We highly recommend this cabin and very much hope to return ourselves.

Beautiful Home away from Home!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful time staying at the Kirchner Cabin! It was so relaxing and peaceful. Everything we needed was there and we spent most of our time at the cabin relaxing, fishing, and using the boats. The decor was beautiful and we enjoyed the homey feel. Paul and Jean were wonderful in letting us bring our four legged children along with us and the dogs loved the cabin and the lake just as much as our two legged children did! The pictures don't do it justice, it is everything that is advertised and more! I highly recommend the Kirchner Cabin for your next family vacation! We made a lot of wonderful family memories here!

Terrific time of fun and relaxation!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second vacation stay at the cabin. We love to come in the fall. Wine country was great, antiquing at Wilson's in TC, trout fishing the Au Sable in Grayling, pottery, furniture and dry goods shopping in the Amish country of Mio. Pizza at G's in Kalkaska was the best I have eaten. It was all great! And each night how wonderful to come back to the cozy cabin on Perch Lake. It just don't get much better, in my opinion!

This cabin is everything the add stated it was.

  • 5 of 5

Very clean, very quiet, very pleasant surroundings. We sold our cottage three years ago because my wife wanted to vacation in different places through the summer. This cabin will be one we would like to come back too though. One of my favorite things that we did was drive to a beach near the giant sand dunes and snorkel in the crystal clear waters of Lake Michigan. The kids loved catching and releasing all the turtles and frogs right outside the backyard. We fished everyday, however we did not catch any. This is more likely due to my lack of fishing skills and having a 2, 4 & 6 year old playing in the water, then for lack of big fish in the lake. I am very glad we found this place and thankful for the kirchners allowing strangers to have access to it.

Rustic & Quaint Lakefront Family Vacation Spot

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely enjoyed our stay at Kirchner's Perch Lake cabin. The cabin is very quaint and comfortable. Our entire family took full advantage of all amenities, especially the Jacuzzi at the end of each relaxing day. Paul & Jean were wonderful hosts, making themselves available to address all of our questions before and during our stay. Their hospitality was first class. Thank you both for helping us make a wonderful family vacation memory. Blessings!
