About Paul and Jean Kirchner
We are retired administrators from Munson Healthcare and Michigan Public Schools. We both grew up in Western Michigan and wanted an opportunity for our sons to experience it too. We celebrated every holiday at the cabin. three sons and their families enjoy the great outdoors and playing Bluegrass Music throughout Michigan and Massachusetts. We have owned, enjoyed and improved this cottage since 1987. It was our home full time for more than a year while we were permanently relocating to the Traverse City area. The cottage is lovingly updated yearly.
Paul and Jean Kirchner purchased this Cottage in 1987
Why Paul and Jean Kirchner chose South Boardman
We found this breathtakingly beautiful log cottage with a perfect setting on a non-motor lake while we were vacationing "up north" in early 1987. We bought the cabin as a family Up North retreat. Swimming was a top request for our boys. They also loved fishing and catching turtles. It was safe for our kids when they were growing up and offered so many opportunities for area exploration and was close enough to Traverse City so we could enjoy all the opportunities in the entire area. It offered a very easy access to Traverse City without enduring the traffic of some of the major roads.
What makes this Cottage unique
This is a quiet repose from the summer busy schedule in Traverse City, while easily accessible via paved county roads. It is also uniquely accessible to Cherry Capital Airport which is served by at least 3 major airlines. It also puts Mackinac Island and the Mackinac Bridge an easy day trip away. [100 miles]. The sleepy village of Alden is also a personal favorite. A day trip to Torch Lake and Elk Rapids is also delightful. There is great canoeing on the Manistee River or the Boardman River within 10 miles. Hiking trails are also plentiful in the area.

Peaceful cottage on the lake
We had a wonderful fall week on Perch Lake. A perfect place for our 6-year-old grandson to fish, and for all to relax and enjoy the lovely cabin with a wonderful fireplace. Set well back from a quiet road which was perfect for dog-walking and jogging. Charming, warm interior, comfy beds, gorgeous views of the lake. Would definitely return.
Exactly what we were looking for!
My adult sons and I take an annual trip every September and this was one of our best. The cabin had everything we could possibly have wanted. We took advantage of the hot tub, kayaks, gas grill, and indoor fireplace. I started every morning on the deck with my coffee and a book. Met some neighbors on a walk. We would happily stay here again.
Please come and stay with us again. We love to help make family memories at our log cabin on Perch Lake. We have many fond memories there with our sons and lots of friends since 1987. Paul and Jean Kirchner
Such an awesome place for a vacation and spending time with family!
Thank you Heather. I hope you can join us again on Perch Lake. Paul and Jean
Great little getaway with all the amenities
Super peaceful location but would advise prearranged travel as uber is not available and the owner went out of her way to get our groceries!
Happy to get some groceries for you Carolyn. I agree with you that at least one person in the party would need a car to get back and forth for groceries or to connect at the airport. There are a few taxis that could come out that way, but that is definitely not the norm. I am happy the Uber driver was willing to bring you there upon your arrival at the airport. I might have been able to help you further if surgery had not gotten in the way.
I am happy you enjoyed your stay. Jean and Paul Kirchner
Had a wonderful time swimming, canoeing and fishing off the piers. Nice proximity to Traverse City for shopping and dining and to Kalkaska for groceries and restaurants. The cabin was perfect for our family (2 kids and 2 dogs). We grilled out everyday on the clean new grill. Owner was very responsive when I texted him a couple questions. We would definitely rent this cabin again.
Carl, We look forward to welcoming you and your family back to Perch Lake again. We have one family who has been returning every year since 1987. It's a great family retreat. Jean Kirchner
Very relaxing, pretty location, lots of boats to use, cute cabin & perfect size peaceful lake. Enjoyed our stay & was able to bring dog.
