Great place for large group.
Beautiful old renovated church. Worth the price if you have a big group.
Great group stay
I was in town for a wedding with a large group of friends and Maureen's house was a great space for a group our size.
What a wonderful house. A nicely converted church that comfortably handled a big group. Close to Cornell campus. Would definitely recommend.
Historic Ellis Hollow Church Vacation Rental
Three generations of our family gathered here for a one week summer reunion. It was just perfect! Lots of space to hang out indoors & out. Parents tucked little ones into bed early. Grandparents enjoyed the seclusion of the master suite. And the poker game could go late into the night. Pancakes with fresh picked blueberries (from farm nearby) were enjoyed around the big old dining table. The place was very clean & well equipped. All the windows with screens & the fans kept the place cool & comfortable during a very hot week. Maureen was very accommodating and a pleasant person to do business with. All our local & out of town family loved this place. You will too.
We had a small family reunion at the historic Ellis Hollow Church. The accommodations were as described, clean, well-maintained, and met our needs nicely. The kitchen was very functional and allowed us to prepare our communal meals as well as good for grazing for breakfasts and lunches. We liked that they have bins for recycling. There was plenty of parking for the cars.
We spent a good deal of time sitting in the main area, playing games and music, and telling family stories. Because of it's history, it felt right to reminisce there. You can have a pleasant walk on the country roads near the church, but use caution with traffic at certain times of day. There's a nice yard in front if you're there during warmer weather. It's only 5-10 minutes to East Hill Plaza which has a nice grocery store and 10-15 minutes to downtown Ithaca and the many surrounding parks and wineries. It's also not far from Dryden if you go over the hill.
We spoke with Maureen and Linda before arrival. Both were very pleasant and helpful with the reservations and information for our planning. I have and will continue to recommend this rental to friends and family.
Ellis Hollow historic church - poor rental. To be avoided!
I rented this historic church at Ellis Hollow for 1 month in November 2013. I was attracted to it as it was written up to be a beautifully restored antiquated church. However, I was terribly disappointed with my stay for several reasons.
While the church retains its quaint facade, the furnishings inside are both tacky and mostly broken down. All the sofas sag, the bedside tables and chest of drawers are rickety and stick when opened, the basement kitchen is completely unusable and has cobwebs (there was a big cobweb hanging from one of the basement bedroom fans!)... the list goes on. The entire 'antique' ambiance is gone, thanks to all of that. The worst part? The innumerable bugs and spiders that crawl everywhere, on a daily basis. I had to pick up dead bugs almost everyday from the floor. Not a good vacation chore! When I called management to complain, I was told that this is to be expected in an old 'historic' home! Really?! Well, the owner charges high rent for this old 'historic' place and at the least, I expect decent furniture and basic cleanliness.
A week after I started staying in this so-called 'renovated' church, the boiler in the basement broke and water flooded everywhere. I was categorically told that I would have to manage without hot water for 2 days - and this was in November when it was really very, very cold. There was no courtesy call made to apologize for the unexpected problem or at least offer me a refund. Guess I had already paid up my monthly rental amount - that's all the owner cared about.
By the way, beware about your security deposit - it will not be returned on the last day, as claimed. I had to personally ask for my security deposit, after 1 month passed by with no sign of it. Then, I found to my horror that only a small portion of the actual deposit was refunded back to me, based on some trumped up charges of cleaning, repair etc. of the church. They were not substantiated with any proof either. Essentially, I got ripped off, in more ways than one. However, even though the owner got away with my money, I learned a good lesson from my bad experience.
I hope this honest review will prevent others from getting conned by this church rental. I would not recommend the Ellis Hollow church as a vacation rental - unless you want to lose money paying for junk and bad service.
