So my wife and I just had our first big family reunion, four children and their spouses, as well as grandchildren and in-laws and cousins -- an active group of 20+ people, ages ranging from 60s to 6 months. Overall, the "OIB Chillin'" beach house served our needs well. The eight bedrooms & baths were necessary for this active group.
The kitchen / dining / living area was a constant bustle of activity, filled with an atmosphere of jovial enjoyment of people who rarely see each other. The kitchen was well stocked. All appliances (refrigerators, stove / oven, microwave, blender) worked well. The two refrigerator / freezer combos were great, and the icemakers were quick to provide ice.
The kitchen working area was a bit tight with many people involved in food prep, but we have a few humorous memories as a result. There's nothing like deciding which food dish(es) should be given priority. Baked potatoes or birthday cake anyone??? The "island" in the kitchen was very functional, providing additional counter working area, storage space and, yes, barstools for an expanded seating area.
The bedrooms served their purpose. The unit was clean when we arrived, and all the bedspreads were in place. The bathrooms functioned fine; one of them had a bit of paint peeling, but it didn't detract from our enjoyment. The water pressure and temperature in the bathrooms were fine.
The internet and TV systems worked well, no problems. The washer & dryer worked well, except for one quirky thing: the washer would only fill with water when the top was open. Once we figured this out, it worked with no problems.
Having a pool on the deck was fabulous especially for the little ones. The deck railing shows some beating from ocean weather, and a few spindles were missing…not a problem unless you have small ones who can't swim. Upon arrival, the pool was cloudy. I notified the owner, and he immediately arranged for the "pool guy" to come the next day to add the proper chemicals. Pools take time to clear, which it did mostly within a couple of days. There was a nice, large wooden picnic table on the deck which was in need of some repair; it did function acceptably but required us to be careful.
Beach access was great!
We loved our family time together and may have just started a family tradition!
The location of this home is perfect, our group of 12+ women loved the fact that we all had our own bed and there were plenty of bathrooms. The kitchen was well stocked, with more dishes and glasses than we could ever hope to use. The fact that there were 2 refrigerators was a great help. The owner was very responsesive to our questions before and during our stay. Just a few negatives, some of the bedspreads needed washing which we noticed when we were making the beds, at a beach house with all the sand seems like that is something that housekeeping should do on each changeover. There were quite a few light bulbs burned out, no toilet paper at all in a few bathrooms (we did bring our own) and the batteries for most of tv remotes needed replacing. However, we didn't mention to the owner since we weren't watching the tvs and we just dealt with the bulbs, but again, something the housekeepers should check. All in all it was a great stay, most of the furniture showed signs of wear and tear but that was to be expected in a casual beach home.
Our feeling when first entering the home was "keep your shoes on and don't touch anything." Aside from the inconvenience of not having a single roll of toilet paper or paper towel upon arrival, which, by the way, we find unacceptable after traveling a long distance, the home did not appear to have been cleaned beyond perhaps a light scrub of the kitchen floor, counter tops and bathrooms.
Let's start with the kitchen. We found one coffee pot unusable it was so dirty and the other still had grounds in it along with a dirty pot. We found dirty water in one of the pans actually located in the cupboard and some of silverware was dirty. The condition and selection of the pots, pans and utensils for a kitchen intended to serve 20+ people was far below standard. The lower rack of the dishwasher was broken and would "crash" downward each time the rack was pulled out or pushed in creating a very loud noise and concern of breakage. There were also ants and cockroaches in the kitchen area.
Staying on the subject of food prep, one grill was completely unusable; it "blew up" from the grease and build up and appeared to be unsafe. Despite the contract specifying grills needed to be cleaned, they were not. This was very frustrating as we had prepared a large BBQ and were only able to use one of the grills. The tools were filthy. There was no propane, which we also understood from the contract that tanks were to be filled upon leaving.
Let's now move to the bedrooms. The two ocean front king bedrooms had bathroom shower curtain liners that were disgusting; they were covered with mold and stains. These were replaced when we called about this, but having to call about something so basic as a clean shower liner?? You can purchase them at a dollar store. One of the bedrooms listed as a king size bed was really two twin mattresses pushed together and very uncomfortable. The other king bedroom had a broken bed. The 8th bedroom was totally misrepresented; it was nothing more than the living room couch pulled out. The AC unit would "lock" at a certain temp.
We were unclear as to why there was a notice on the refrigerator stating beds were to be made upon departure while the contract said to strip the beds. The beds were made upon arrival but sheets were not clean. Two of the beds were the worst with sand abundant in one and a large brown spot (which was not a stain, as I was able to hand wash it). Cockroaches were in the bedrooms too.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful beach house with us. The kitchen has everything we have in our kitchen at home even GLASS wine glasses. We're very responsible with them. Each bedroom has its own bathroom. Very nice! Most evenings we eat outside. Not many places would have seats for 25 on the deck. The pool is perfect and the ocean is just a few steps from the door! Looking forward to next year's visit already. We all say it's the best week of the year.
Great beach front home at convenient location that was perfect for our family reunion. Pool next to downstairs open area made for great opportunity for all to be together. Two refrigerators and well equipped kitchen supported meals for 19 in our group. Would definitely stay here again.
I would NOT recommend this house for rental for anyone with children! The pool deck and front deck has loose railings and spindles and nails sticking out! the cleaning service that was recommended by the owner was a JOKE! I do not believe they used any cleaning supplies, if they even cleaned at all! There were cobwebs in corners of the windows and THICK dust on the living room ceiling fan! The rugs throughout the house are filthy and I do NOT think the floors have ever been mopped! And there were roaches in the kitchen! I've been in houses with ants and palmetto bugs but NEVER roaches and I I keep my home WAY cleaner than this so I expect when I'm paying the amount I am to rent a house for a week that its in the same condition of not BETTER!
I have been coming to Ocean Isle Beach for 4 years now and this is the absolute worst place I have ever stayed in and I would not ever recommend it to anyone! WORST STAY EVER!
