While originally from Maine, we currently live in Florida. We bought this home in 1998 to be able to spend more time near our family. When not there ourselves, we love sharing the home. It's a great location, a warm environment, and the kayaks are just such a treat. The nearby islands are fantastic to explore. We've worked very hard to make the home enjoyable for our guests, and it is fully supplied with everything you should need. We also try to have laundry, dish and dishwasher detergent, tin foil, baggies,etc....all those sort of things you don't want to have to buy for a short stay. We also put in comfortable and quality bedding. It's a great house!!
Barbara purchased this house in 1998
Having grown up in Maine, but now living in Florida, I was homesick! So we bought a fixer upper and the whole family pitched in and helped us fully renovate this former 'lobsterman's family home'. With very few homes actually waterfront on Stonington Harbor, this home was unique and really special.
This home is right on the harbor, and only a few minutes walk to downtown. And the dock is fantastic....we have 8 kayaks to use! This is the best location for kayaking out to the nearby islands. We have many return guests...so I guess they like it as much as we do!
Stonington and this awesome house on the water has quickly become a family favorite. Stonington is such a charming town, beautiful atmosphere with great shops, restaurants, ice cream and specifically The Opera House.
The house is perfect, very comfortable, on the water and equipped with kayaks that we seem to be in almost every day of our stay.
We are looking forward to being there this summer!
The town of Stonington is magical - and the views of it from the house are the same. We did a day trip to Acadia (very long in time, though not so much in mileage), toured Blue Hill, hiked to Barred Island, went to Sand Beach on Deer Isle. All highly recommended. Nervous Nellies is OK. The ferry to Isle au Haut was gorgeous, but we would not recommend staying on Isle au Haut unless you're up for a long hike. The art gallery in Stonington is spectacular. Not a ton else to do in the immediate area. The house and setting are ideal for lots of time reading and relaxing. Stonington only has one nice restaurant - Aragosta. Fisherman's friend is OK. Grocery stores OK, not anything like a gourmet situation. The house is rather modest for what we're used to paying for this price in high season in Maine. The kayaks were very nice to have and well kept.
Loved our stay in this quaint but lovely home on Stonington Harbor this past July. The views were amazing - tranquil setting overlooking lobster boats and islands on the Gulf of Maine. You can spend the day on the deck just watching the harbor activities and the tidal swings. The house is fully appointed and comfortable - everything you need is provided and then some. We enjoyed walks to the little town of Stonington where there are great places to eat any meal of the day, shop or enjoy events at the Opera House. Short day trips to Barred Island, Sand Beach and Nervous Nellie's Jams and Jellies are highlights to name a few that are close by. A trip to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor were great as well as the boat ride to Isle of Haut which is right down the street. Best of all is the use of the kayaks and going to the nearby islands for a swim in a quarry, relax on a beautiful sandy beach or just enjoy the clear waters. Couldn't be more perfect and look forward to returning! Thanks to owner Barbara Wescott for making this a most enjoyable time!
Totally perfect! A week wasn't long enough in this homey house overlooking the working Stonington Harbor! Loved the house, view and town. Weather was beautiful, allowing lots of time on deck watching all the lobster and fishing boat activity from our perch over the harbor. A genuine working harbor, only saw one sailboat and no yachts. The house had everything we needed, including the antique dough board, which I used to make dough for fried apple pies! Watching the huge tides change the view. Days of walking exploration of the town's hills and harbor, painting from the deck, kayaking, or just soaking up the view.
One day trip to Acadia National Park, beautiful! and another to Moosehead Lake. We saw 3 moose! A boat ride to Isle de Haut to deliver the mail and on to Seal Island to see our first puffins. Nervous Nellies Jams & Jellies is a "don't miss it" curious art stop. Checked out Belfast and Camden Harbors on our way home.
The house was clean, open, comfy and beautiful with morning sunlight streaming in the front windows.
All week we were planning our return to this exceptional house and town.
If you want a true Down East experience, with access to the water, use of kayaks, and views of a working harbor that are exceptional, then this Victorian property is for you and your family. It is an easy walk to the town of Stonington, the lobster pound, and the boat to Isle au Haut. The house is unusually well stocked, and having a full sized washer and dryer was a plus for our party. We would come again.
The spectacular views from this quaint and comfortable home make every moment memorable. And when you decide you want to do more than watch the harbor activity - you can get in a kayak and become a part of it all! Stonington is a magical place and this well equipped home is right in the heart of the magic! Easy access to isle au haut ferry is a plus when you want to spend a day hiking Acadia.
The home is particularly well situated to kayak out to nearby islands beckoning for exploration. Two minute walk to downtown shops, galleries, museum, restaurants and much more.
