We fell in love with this magical property on top of the hill and decided to build a unique dream house for our retirement. We are too young to retire so decided to share it with you and your family as a vacation rental.
Chris Wej purchased this lodge in 1997
North Kohala is known as God's country. It is the richest part of the island in terms of natural beauty.
There are spectacular coastal views and You can see the chain of Hawaiian Island from the Lodge. There are moonbows on certain nights. Star gazing is perfect from this property.
We stayed 3 nights at this fantastic property. When we drove up, we all had our jaws drop. It is even lovelier than the pictures. The house sits high up the hill from the little town of Hawi and overlooks the ocean. When the clouds move out of the way, you can see Maui across the channel. The house is a beautiful lodge home that really fits the character of the area (the Parker Ranch/Waimea area horse properties). The owners live in a house screened by trees down the hill. You'd never know they were there unless you had a question or needed something, and then they were right there to ask. They have horses and sheep in the pasture just below the house and treats to feed them. My kids were in heaven waking up every day to an awesome tree swing, hammock in the trees, huge lawn, and animals to interact with. We loved sitting out on the huge front porch and watching the sunsets and stars. The house was well appointed and beds were comfortable. The town of Hawi has several really good restaurants and some of the best ice cream on the Island. There's a farmer's market and good grocery store, and fun artisan shops to browse through. Great beaches are a short drive away and they have boogie boards, towels, chairs and umbrella ready for you. If you are looking for a great place to get away from it all, this is it. We all wanted to move in and were really sad to leave. Thanks for an amazing stay!
It was love at first sight online and the feeling was just as strong in situ. Peaceful location, 30 minutes from the beaches. The ranch-style house felt very authentic, comfortable, beautifully decorated. The horses and goats came to greet us when offered treats. Garden is gorgeous. It was like stepping in a dream... peaceful, blissful, wonderful! I highly recommend this place and would go back in a jiffy!
Do not look any further, I have stayed in many short term rentals and this is by far the best place to stay on the Big Island. The Kohala Lodge is so charming. A big bonus is viewing the animals at the Lodge and meeting Chris himself. If you want to get a sense of The Big Island, look no further. This place is SO SPECIAL, you will not want to leave. Book Now, before your dates are gone! Hopefully you can stay at this amazing place. There is nothing else like it on the Big Island!
We loved our stay at Kohala Lodge. Our flight came in at 9pm and we had no problem getting to the house and settling in. Everything was just as described, if not better. The next day we were able to shop at Costco in Kona for supplies/groceries and then hit the beach in the afternoon (Hapuna is just 30 minutes or so from the house). We eventually caught up with Chris and chatted a bit about the history of the property while being entertained by his 10 day old lamb! The view from the porch is amazing and refreshing. We really didn't want to leave! If you'd like to get away from the chaos of the beaches and experience a truly restful vacation, this is the spot for you.
Our family of 5 spent Christmas at the Kohala lodge and it was wonderful! Sunrise and sunset views of the ocean, a fireplace for cool evenings, and a 15-25 minute drive to private coves or world-class beaches during the day. The home is wonderfully appointed with an old paniolo cowboy-style feel and sits on the hillside overlooking pastures with horses and sheep. Light showers flow in and out of the area so the grass between the gravel driveway and the front porch was quite muddy and there’s no way around it. A stepping stone or gravel pathway would be the only suggestion I could make to the owners to help with this transition from car to porch. Other than this, our stay was wonderful and we would happily return to the Kohala Lodge again.
This place was the perfect spot for a getaway. So serene, amazing views, and a completely different perspective from elsewhere on the island. We brought our kids (2 and 5) and they loved the area though we were thankful for a few DVDs and toys that were in the lodge to entertain them. The kitchen had most of what we needed. Hawi is a short drive (under 10 minutes) for grocery shopping and restaurants (Sushi Rock was great, even for the kids.)
The lodge looks exactly like the photos, even down to the cowboy boots. We loved sitting on the porch with a tea or coffee and enjoying the views and watching the animals. We drove to Pololu Valley and did the short hike down to the black sand beach and up again (even our 5 year old did it -- the 2 year old had to be carried up.) Not too far from Waimea which has a GREAT kids playground, fun farmers market. We also hit Hapuna Beach and Mauna Kea beach (go early, like before 9am, to the latter if you want parking) and stopped at Anuenue Shave Ice on the way back. Only about 30 minutes away. The laundry facilities were much appreciated.
Thanks for a great stay!
