I am a 4th generation West Virginian that wanted to build a remote Lodge near the National Forest.
We love the 'cool' temperatures of the mountains. We wanted property with no neighbors. We found it. Nearest neighbor 2 miles away. We began building in 1990, 4 years later we opened. Over the years we have made several improvements; more solar panels, hydro electric , trout pond, etc.. Love the WV mountains and you will too.
Entirely Off the Grid; Solar, Hydro and Wind Power the Lodge. Adjacent to a vast National Forest & Trail System. Amazing stars at night. No bugs. Really. Sit on the deck without getting 'eaten alive' as visitors to other vacation destinations will tell you. Very unique lodging experience.
I organized a group of 11 guys to adventure to this oasis in the woods for a bachelor party and weekend of outdoor adventures. Nothing disappointed at all, and the accommodations, views, surrounding nature, and tranquility were absolutely perfect. This house truly has everything you need. Two fridges, tons of kitchen amenities, lots of dry wood, directions for every necessary power element, and the most stunning views of the West Virginia mountains we have ever seen.
The drive up in the summer isn't too bad, we had low clearance cars that made it just fine. It rained all day our second day but we made the best of it and still hiked the trails behind the house. Rooms are plentiful and water pressure for showers is quite nice considering you are off the grid.
All around 5-star experience. Would absolutely return again and can only imagine winter is even more fun. Don't miss this unique home!
The property was everything promised. I brought a group of 9 friends for Labor Day weekend. John was incredibly helpful, and I couldn't ask for much more from an owner. The kitchen was impeccably stocked and there was plenty of seating and dining/living room. The view was out of this world, the photos don't quite do it justice. Highly recommended, and I hope to return soon!
This is the second time our extended family has used the lodge, the last being two years ago. Even though it is a great distance from our home in Florida (800 miles), all 16 of us elected to return, and we will probably rent it again at some time in the future.
It is hard to have quality time with children and grandchildren, but this affords it. We have been fortunate enough in our life to visit many beautiful places in the world, but none are more tranquil than this. The owners have made significant improvements to the property over the
years, which make it even more accomadating. If you like relaxing, fellowship, hiking and nature watching, this is the place. It is an excellent place for large family gatherings.
I'm always weary about going to these sites without knowing the owners. This home was beyond what we were looking for. The view made our wedding that much better. The pictures we were able to get from the cabin and by the pond will make our memories for years to come exciting. John and Linda reached out multiple times to make sure things were going well. They had everything you could possibly need when staying somewhere which came as a surprise to me. My wife and I will stay here more in the years to come as well will our families and friends that stayed with us. Thank you again John and Linda for allowing our special day to be absolutely incredible we can't begin to show you how grateful we are. We would recommend this cabin to anyone thinking about staying here.
When I first found this property on VRBO, I was intrigued with the seclusion and access to the National Forest right from the back of the property. We love to hike and being able to access hiking trails from the property was very important to us. The Lodge is definitely secluded but you can still drive less than 20 minutes and be in Hillsboro (a small town). The Lodge itself is stocked with all that you need to have a great stay. It seems that prior guests have left behind certain kitchen items for the next guests which resulted in a fully stocked kitchen. 2 refrigerators made it convenient for larger groups like ourselves. The house has a great pot belly stove that keeps the Lodge at a comfortable temp. The Lodge has plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms. The owner, John, was very attentive without being intrusive. Since the Lodge generates its own power, he was very helpful in explaining how the house power is managed and we had no issues at all. A couple of phone conversations was all that we needed to figure everything out. He was always available if we needed him.
We had all kinds of weather while we there. Sunny, rain, cold, warm and snow. Each climate offered something. We had 6 inches of snow one day and that made for a great day of snowball fights, igloo making and sledding.
The views were spectacular and the sunrises incredible. We cannot wait to go back.
Every 4 years as a staff we try to get away and spend some time together thinking and talking about our future as an organization. This was our 3rd retreat and by far the best place we ever retreated to. We loved being completely secluded. No distractions other than 4 people getting lost in the woods for 4 hours. The home owner is wonderful to work with. Only possible draw back is it could use a new hot tub but trust me when I say even that did not distract from the experience. My problem now is getting the staff to wait 4 years for the next retreat. They keep suggesting we need an annual retreat. BTW, I have never given any place a 5 star rating before.
